Steiff Club Magazine 02/2019 2 Editorial Editorial 3

Dear Steiff friends,

We have found that our competitions are becoming more and more popular. The number of entrants is constantly growing. Of course, there are some significant differences. For instance, the "Pattern " competition in the last issue of the Club magazine was nowhere near as popular as the competition that we staged as part of the advance notice of the Margarete Steiff edition in May. What is always exciting yet hard to answer is the question of what ultimately persuades you, our Club members, to enter a competition. Is it the kind of questions, the prizes on offer, or simply the fact that there may be the occasional additional reminder for the competition? We don't know, but we are already curious to see how many of you enter the competition on page 38. You will probably have to do a little bit of research to find the answers.

You could also be a winner if you are devoted to the items in the Margarete Steiff edition. Starting on page 12, you can find out how the “Margarete Steiff Elephant on wheels” came into being, and what charming details make this exclusive piece so special.

And once again, I'd like to draw your attention to Steiff's co-operation with National Geographic (page 28). This is a subject that affects us all, and should not be ignored.

Along with lots of other information, you'll learn that a once inspired a woman who was to become a best-selling writer to write and illustrate her first book (page 31), and you can immerse yourself in newly-opened "Worlds of Steiff" both at home and abroad (from page 42).

My best greetings to you all, and I hope you all have a lovely summer.

Yours,

INGE ZINNECKER, Steiff Club Manager 4 5

We are sure you will remember our loyalty Teddy bears, which have been a permanent fixture in our Club offer since last year. Making history in paper – again Presenting the 2019 Margarete Steiff edition.

Making their debut with an exquisitely embroidered Teddy bear called “Flowers” in 2004, Margarete Steiff editions are truly works of art. Produced in very limited quantities, they are reserved for the most serious and dedicated of all Steiff collectors. Each represents the finest and most exclusive modern Steiff items available today – the zenith of the company’s contempo- rary production. All are characterized by extra- ordinary fabrics, exquisite designs, intricate detailing, custom accessories, and unique IDs.

The series continues this Fall as we set an even higher standard of achievement than ever before. Commemora- ting the 110th anniversary of Margarete Steiff’s passing and in anticipation of the company’s 140th year in business, we are pleased to present a breathtaking white elephant made of paper plush. The elephant honours the first toy sewn by Margarete Steiff, and pays tribute to the company’s earliest mascot on the “Button in Ear” trademark. Measuring 35 cm long, the elephant will be produced in an edition of only 139 pieces. It will be made available via a drawing to Club members exclusively.

Paper plush is perhaps the most fascinating of all materials used to create Steiff animals. During and immediately following the First World War, the company was unable to source adequate supplies of its traditional materials, such as mohair and felt. Utilizing an abundant supply of forest products in the area, technicians at Schulte cleverly developed a tweed-like paper plush material, called Brennessel, which was made from nettles. Items manufactured from this material appeared in Steiff catalogues from 1919 through 1921, and included bears, dogs, cats, and rabbits. an equally popular white version in 2014. Six years later, After an absence of nearly 90 years from the Steiff history is being made once again with our first-ever paper assortment, this unique material made a nostalgic return plush white elephant. Befitting an edition which marks when the technology required to manufacture it was two historic milestones, great care has been taken to rediscovered in 2010. The resulting brown paper plush ensure that each aspect of this special black label edition is Teddy replica was a smashing success. It was followed by deluxe in every way. 14 Club News Club News 15

Capturing the memories The Steiff “Family series” continues with a well-loved lion.

To preserve the treasured memories of Steiff family members of the toys that defined their childhoods, we are pleased to continue our series of heirloom collectibles. Each includes a beautifully framed reprint of a vintage photo of each child with their best-loved Steiff toy.

The series was introduced last year with the Peter Hotz Zotty. In Spring 2020, we will present a reproduction of the cherished lion belonging to Claire Steiff Meisel. In addition to being ’s grand-daughter, Claire is a member of the Steiff Beirat (board of directors), represents the company at events in Japan, and is also on the board of M.S. 1880 in Japan. A bright idea 15th anniversary of Steiff Teddy bears adorned with Swarovski crystals.

Steiff and Swarovski are two companies that have much in common. Both were founded in the late 19th century by visionaries who would each change the course of their particular industry. Both are known for their commitment to creativity, craftsmanship, and quality. And both companies make products that are cherished by collectors around the world.

So back in 2003, it seemed only natural that Steiff and Swarovski should take advantage of the synergies between their brands. Tossing ideas back and forth, the companies agreed to create a sparkling limited edition Steiff Teddy bear wearing a Swarovski holiday ornament around its neck and a shimmering Xilion crystal as its “Button in Ear.” Introduced in the fourth quarter of 2004, the Daniel bear (named for Swarovski’s founder) immediately captured the imaginations of collectors of each brand. It was to be the first of many crystal embellished collectibles, a tradition that continues to this day.
