JULIANA GERAN PILON [email protected] Dr. Juliana Geran Pilon is Research Professor of Politics and Culture and Earhart Fellow at the Institute of World Politics. For the previous two years, she taught in the Political Science Department at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. From January 1991 to October 2002, she was first Director of Programs, Vice President for Programs, and finally Senior Advisor for Civil Society at the International Foundation for Election Systems (IFES), after three years at the National Forum Foundation, a non-profit institution that focused on foreign policy issues - now part of Freedom House - where she was first Executive Director and then Vice President. At NFF, she assisted in creating a network of several hundred young political activists in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. For the past thirteen years she has also taught at Johns Hopkins University, the Institute of World Politics, George Washington University, and the Institute of World Politics. From 1981 to 1988, she was a Senior Policy Analyst at the Heritage Foundation, writing on the United Nations, Soviet active measures, terrorism, East-West trade, and other international issues. In 1991, she received an Earhart Foundation fellowship for her second book, The Bloody Flag: Post-Communist Nationalism in Eastern Europe -- Spotlight on Romania, published by Transaction, Rutgers University Press. Her autobiographical book Notes From the Other Side of Night was published by Regnery/Gateway, Inc. in 1979, and translated into Romanian in 1993, where it was published by Editura de Vest. A paperback edition appeared in the U.S. in May 1994, published by the University Press of America. -
Modernism and Andrei Amalrik's Nose! Nose? No-Se!
Fall 1992 89 Dark Images of Dissidence: Modernism and Andrei Amalrik's Nose! Nose? No-se! Nancy Kindelan I Critics describe the dissident drama of Andrei Amalrik (1938-1980), especially Nose! Nose? No-se! (1968), as following the Russian tradition of the absurd, grotesque, and satire. Amalrik's adaptation of Gogol's short story, "The Nose" (1936), and his reading of Ionesco, Beckett, and the futuristic plays of Khlebnikov, link Amalrik to prior and modern perceptions of absurdist literary and dramatic techniques. In the absurdist world, reality is depicted as disjointed and disoriented, complete with characters who cannot communicate, fear authority and define life in isolation. Although it appears that Amalrik's play and the absurdist's world are similar, there is evidence that this play's intricate form allows for multiple interpretations. In Twentieth-Century Drama, Harold Segel notes that while there is a connection between Amalrik's plays and the absurdist and grotesque drama, "the complexity of his plays sets him apart." Particularly, he states that the "strange configurations of character and incident often make interpretation a matter of intuition or impression" (396). Nose! Nose? No-se! has received some literary and dramatic attention; however, little consideration has been afforded to how this play's "complexity," and the "strange configurations of character and incident" have combined to shape Amalrik's dramatic form. Russian dramatic criticism specifies that German expressionism played a minor role in the development of their drama; however, while there are no significant Russian expressionistic playwrights, Amalrik's play contains significant components of this form. Rosalyn Drexler: Likes a little humor with her humanity AMY SUTHERLAND JUNE 10, 2016 Artist, novelist, playwright, critic, Rosalyn Drexler obviously never felt compelled to limit herself to one genre over the past six decades. That is why she’s won an Obie Award and an Emmy Award as well as created enough paintings and collages to warrant a retrospective. If you missed the recent exhibit of Drexler’s pop art, “Who Does She Think She Is?,” organized by Brandeis University’s Rose Art Museum, the show travels to the Albright-Knox Gallery in Buffalo, N.Y., this fall. The exhibit catalogue is available from the Rose. BOOKS: What are you reading currently? DREXLER: I was re-reading Kafka’s short story “A Hunger Artist,” and I also just read part of Joan Didion’s “After Henry,” a collection of essays dedicated to her longtime editor Henry Robbins at Simon and Schuster who died in 1979. BOOKS: Who are some of your favorite authors? DREXLER: Balzac, whom I read as a kid. I found out about sex by reading his “Droll Stories.” I didn’t understand the book but thought it was funny, with what these people were up to. I very much enjoyed Gabriel García Márquez’s “One Hundred Years of Solitude.” Te last book of his I read, “Memories of My Melancholy Whores,” however, was slow and not as exciting as his other stuf. I love Nathanael West’s “Te Day of the Locust” and “Miss Lonelyhearts,” and Samuel Beckett’s “Endgame.” I never stopped crying afer reading that because at the end one of the characters climbs a ladder and looks out the window and reports he sees nothing. -

Internal Problems Facing the New Soviet Leadership by George Miller Introduction Since the death of Lenin in 1924, the Soviet Union has lived through three distinct phases. The first was the Stalinist period, re membered by the Party for the continual purges amongst its ranks. Second was the Krushchev era which, by its reforms and reorgani zations, threatened the existence of the privileged party nomenkla tura—those entitled to all manner of material benefits. Finally, we have recently seen the end of the Brezhnev period, distinguished by domestic inertia2 and the strengthening and modernization of the armed forces. The eighteen years of Brezhnev rule have seemed, outwardly, a period of domestic stability and security. But behind a veneer of calm, a host of problems have gone unaddressed so that the new leadership faces many serious difficulties overdue for remedy. By avoiding change, Brezhnev has willed his successors some embar rassing debts. This article examines some of the USSR's internal problems and advances the idea that the Soviet system may alter radically and rapidly within the present decade. This proposal is in contrast with most Western analyses, which view change in Soviet policies as gradual, predictable and limited. Domestic Problems Even before Brezhnev's death, there were signs of pressure within the party hierarchy to move away from a policy of extreme conserv atism. This antagonism manifested itself in public with anti-Brezhnev statements—such as the article which ridiculed Brezhnev in the De cember 1981 edition of Aurora.2 Such criticism was not invariably destructive and negative in nature. -
