He wanted to create an atmospheric black metal, aiming to describe musically both the feeling contained in Lovecraft's writings and his interest for extreme music. Early 2011, his encounter with Jeff Grimal (guitars, vocals) made him want to bring the project to an upper level for which they needed other musicians. Thus Leo Isnard (drums), Xavier Godart (guitars) and Sebastian Lalanne (bass) joined the band, giving birth to The Great Old Ones. One could say their music is dark, intense, close to Altar Of Plagues, Fen, and Wolves In The Throne Room. Their first album, Al Azif, recorded and mixed in October 2011 by Cyrille Gachet from France's Year Of No Light and mastered by Alan Douches from New York (Mastodon, Tombs, The Dillinger Escape Plan), was released on April 27th, 2012 via Les Acteurs de l'Ombres Productions (FR/EUR) and Antithetic Records (US). Al Azif was very well receive by the press, and this allow them to give a lot of concerts in France and all over Europe with bands like Aura Noir, Forgotten Tomb, Nekromantheon, Forteresse, Borgne, Temple Of Baal, Make A Change... Kill Yourself, Isole and Terzij De Horde. In 2013, The Great Old Ones received the honor to play at HELLFEST OPEN AIR in Clisson, France. Tekeli-li, their second album, was released in april 2014, and enabled them to play at the ROADBURN FESTIVAL in Netherlands and UNDER THE BLACK SUN FESTIVAL in Germany. They opened for Behemoth during their french appearance in december 2014 and they headlined a tour in UK for the first time in march 2015. In june 2015, they were, once again, part of the HELLFEST OPEN AIR lineup. In september 2015, they opened for Shining (SWE) during their french tour (7 gigs). The event is dedicated to Philippe Leonard and Thisquietarmy as a tribute to the long-term collaboration on experimental audiovisual of this Canadian duo. 2x16mm+guitar+effects is an opportunity to see in action Philippe Leonard, influenced by the great tradition of North American experimental cinema, whose practice on film (16mm and 35mm) led him to important collaborations, including the contribution to the visuals of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and the pioneering Thisquietarmy music project. The Canadian duo works in great synergy on the possibility of expanded cinema. Philippe Leonard, canadian experimental film-maker lives and works in Montreal. His artistic practice focuses on still and moving images, through film, photography, performance and installations. His theoretical and aesthetic reflections focus on the complex temporality of still and moving images, the spectral dimension of physical spaces, and expanded documentary practices.

OMAR KHORSHID - Guitar El Chark DOUBLE 12" LP ( Sublime Frequencies ) I hear that this sucker is already sold out, and I can understand why. Guitar El Chark , which translates to 'Guitar of the Orient', is a collection of singles, and album cuts that spawn the Lebanese years of Omar Khorshid's musical career. The Egyptian Khorshid began playing guitar in the early 60s, and soon formed Le Petit Chats, who were modeled after The Beatles. Later he would join Abdel Halim Hafez and Baligh Hamdi in their orchestra, and that was when his fame began to spread throughout the Middle East. In the early 1970s he moved to Beirut, Lebanon, and recorded several solo LPs from 1973 to 1977. This later solo work is where the songs on Guitar El Chark come from. This release, and Omar's later work, consist of a blend of surf guitar, traditional Arab music, Flamenco, and psychedelic keyboards that form an instrumental, almost early-Bollywood sound. Seventeen tracks, and one promotional radio spot, adding up to over eighty minutes of awesome. I cannot express how wonderful it is to finally get my hands on some of his work. Well, neither can thousands of others, as this limited edition, gatefold, double slab of 12" wax has apparently flown off the racks. Hopefully, Seattle's Sublime Frequencies Records will reissue this in CD format for the newly schooled masses.
