Until the Late Twentieth Century, the Historiography and Analysis of Jazz Were Centered
2 Diasporic Jazz Abstract: Until the late twentieth century, the historiography and analysis of jazz were centered on the US to the almost complete exclusion of any other region. This was largely driven by the assumption that only the “authentic” version of the music, as represented in its country of origin, was of aesthetic and historical interest in the jazz narrative; that the forms that emerged in other countries were simply rather pallid and enervated echoes of the “real thing.” With the growth of the New Jazz Studies, it has been increasingly understood that diasporic jazz has its own integrity, as well as holding valuable lessons in the processes of cultural globalization and diffusion and syncretism between musics of the supposed center and peripheries. This has been accompanied by challenges to the criterion of place- and race-based authenticity as a way of assessing the value of popular music forms in general. As the prototype for the globalization of popular music, diasporic jazz provides a richly instructive template for the study of the history of modernity as played out musically. The vigor and international impact of Australian jazz provide an instructive case study in the articulation and exemplification of these dynamics. Section 1 Page 1 of 19 2 Diasporic Jazz Running Head Right-hand: Diasporic Jazz Running Head Left-hand: Bruce Johnson 2 Diasporic Jazz Bruce Johnson New Jazz Studies and Diaspora The driving premise of this chapter is that “jazz was not ‘invented’ and then exported. It was invented in the process of being disseminated” (Johnson 2002a, 39). With the added impetus of the New Jazz Studies (NJS), it is now unnecessary to argue that point at length. -

Writing to Reach You: The Consumer Music Press and Music Journalism in the UK and Australia Marc Brennan, BA (Hons) Creative Industries Research and Applications Centre (CIRAC) Thesis Submitted for the Completion of Doctor of Philosophy (Creative Industries), 2005 Writing to Reach You Keywords Journalism, Performance, Readerships, Music, Consumers, Frameworks, Publishing, Dialogue, Genre, Branding Consumption, Production, Internet, Customisation, Personalisation, Fragmentation Writing to Reach You: The Consumer Music Press and Music Journalism in the UK and Australia The music press and music journalism are rarely subjected to substantial academic investigation. Analysis of journalism often focuses on the production of news across various platforms to understand the nature of politics and public debate in the contemporary era. But it is not possible, nor is it necessary, to analyse all emerging forms of journalism in the same way for they usually serve quite different purposes. Music journalism, for example, offers consumer guidance based on the creation and maintenance of a relationship between reader and writer. By focusing on the changing aspects of this relationship, an analysis of music journalism gives us an understanding of the changing nature of media production, media texts and media readerships. Music journalism is dialogue. It is a dialogue produced within particular critical frameworks that speak to different readers of the music press in different ways. These frameworks are continually evolving and reflect the broader social trajectory in which music journalism operates. Importantly, the evolving nature of music journalism reveals much about the changing consumption of popular music. Different types of consumers respond to different types of guidance that employ a variety of critical approaches. -

As part of her Mission Songs Project, Jessie Lloyd has spent the past two years faithfully exploring the journey of Indigenous Australian music, connecting traditional with contemporary, and charting continuing cultural practice and oral traditions well into the 21st century. The songs, largely hidden from the outside world, comprise rare and almost-forgotten stories, shedding light onto the history and experiences of Indigenous people, their families and communities. Jessie launched The Songs Back Home, the first of the Mission Songs Project collection, in March 2017 at the Brunswick Music Festival and is touring the album throughout the east coast of Australia. “The 20th Century songs composed and sung on Aboriginal missions and settlements are records of our history and history and tell us about the emotions and aspirations of their composers. Jessie Lloyd’s research to find these songs is a profoundly important contribution to our nation and music.”—Professor Marcia Langton, AM, Mission Songs Project advisor and contributor “Mission Songs Project presents contemporary folk songs that continue the ancient song lines of this country. Running Head: NATIONAL IMAGERY in FINNISH FOLK METAL 1
Running head: NATIONAL IMAGERY IN FINNISH FOLK METAL 1 NATIONAL IMAGERY IN FINNISH FOLK METAL: Lyrics, Facebook and Beyond Renée Barbosa Moura Master‟s thesis Digital Culture University of Jyväskylä Department of Art and Culture Studies Jyväskylä 2014 NATIONAL IMAGERY IN FINNISH FOLK METAL 2 UNIVERSITY OF JYVÄSKYLÄ Faculty Department Humanities Art and Culture Studies Author Renée Barbosa Moura Title National Imagery in FFM: Lyrics, Facebook and Beyond Subject Level Digital Culture MA Thesis Month and year Number of pages June 2014 90 pages Abstract Folk metal is a music genre originated from heavy metal music. For many artists and fans, folk metal is more than just music: it is a way of revitalising tradition. Folk metal is then a genre which is closely related to individual‟s cultural identities. As part of popular culture, heavy metal has been investigated for instance in the fields of cultural studies and psychology. Andrew Brown investigates how heavy metal emerged as subject for academic research. Deena Weinstein approaches heavy metal as culture and behaviour that is shared by individuals from different cultural backgrounds. However, subgenres like folk metal have not yet been explored in depth by academics. Analysing folk metal‟s nuances in specific national contexts would provide further knowledge on national cultures and identities. One example of folk metal reflecting elements of national culture is Finnish folk metal. The bands whose works belong to this genre usually draw from Finnish culture to compose their works, which usually feature stories from a variety of traditional sources such as the epic book Kalevala. Such stories are then transposed into new media, disseminating the artists‟ concept of Finnishness. -

Introduction Heavy Metal Is a Genre of Music That Emerged in the Late
Introduction Heavy metal is a genre of music that emerged in the late 1960s and is traditionally characterised by distorted guitar sounds, heavy drumbeats and wailing or whining vocals. Heavy metal has its own subculture to which fans affirm their membership through buying albums and attending concerts, as well as growing their hair long, getting tattoos and wearing denim and leather (Weinstein 2000:294). For most ‘metalheads’, the battle jacket—a sleeveless denim jacket covered with band patches—is an iconic item of clothing, which works as a complex symbol of their individual and collective identity and plays a key role in memory construction, social interactions and status relations. The battle jacket has its origins in WW2 flight jackets and the 1950’s biker scene, where symbols and artwork were used to express one’s personality or develop group solidarity. Its popularity grew in the 1980s as patches began to be sold at concerts, which fans added to their jackets to authenticate their passion for metal and serve as a cultural biography of their life experiences. The battle jacket is a unique, multifaceted material artefact which provides a vernacular genealogy of heavy metal. However, it has only received scant attention in academic research. Of the few studies on clothing in heavy metal subculture, most have tended to explore band t-shirts (Brown 2007), as well as the role of certain dress codes (Araste and Ventsel 2015) and how clothing is used to ‘perform’ identity (Chaney and Goulding 2016). To date, the most extensive study on battle jackets is an unpublished PhD thesis by Cardwell (2017), which aims to situate the garment in deeper artistic narratives and traditions.
