From then on the Colchester, UK based instrumental metal band were joined by bassist Teddy James Driscoll and have since set about becoming one of the undergrounds most exciting hopes of recent times. With Tempest (Golden Antenna Records) and the 2014 debut album 12 Areas (Devouter Records, Tartarus Records) receiving rave reviews across blogs and print magazines throughout Europe (Visions Magazine, Metal Hammer, Zero Tolerance, Legacy, Rock Hard, Ox Fanzine, Fuze, Rock-a-Rolla, Terrorizer, etc), the band are continuing a momentum that has seen them grow from strength to strength. The band has been championed by fans of post-metal, hardcore, sludge and progressive music alike, speaking volumes for the bands inventive, nuanced and emotionally punishing take on instrumental metal. With such an array of styles and emotions forming into a unique and cohesive whole, Telepathy display an ability to bring fans of many types of metal and instrumental music into their strange and alluring world. Recorded, mixed and mastered at London’s Orgone Studios by lauded producer /engineer Jaime Gomez Arellano (Ghost, Opeth, Paradise Lost, Altar of Plagues, Cathedral), Tempest follows in the footsteps of Telepathy’s critically acclaimed 2014 debut 12 Areas and is very much a concept record. Tempest depicts the harrowing journey of a person beset with grief and faced with total isolation after awaking from a great flood. The album guides the listener on a journey through awakening, desolation and finally acceptance. Tempest fuses elements of post-metal, sludge, doom and black metal with unorthodox and complex song structures, creating a cohesive and cathartic tapestry of unique instrumental metal. The inclusion of tortured vocals on the album’s centrepiece, Echo of Souls, shows a band unafraid to travel into uncharted waters. Where its predecessor 12 Areas was by intention a chaotic and furious exploration of sound, Tempest marks a shift towards a more balanced and open sonic palette. The album is a far darker and more dynamic, emotional and refined record than before, with an added emphasis on sonic weight, unbridled heaviness, melody and emotional depth.     1 The Invocation at Tilburg: Mysticism, Implicit Religion and Gravetemple’s Drone Metal by Owen Coggins 1.1 On 18th April 2013, an extremely slow, loud and noisy “drone metal” band Gravetemple perform at the Roadburn heavy metal and psychedelic rock festival in Tilburg in the Netherlands. After forty-five minutes of gradually intensifying, largely improvised droning noise, the band reach the end of their set. Guitarist Stephen O’Malley conjures distorted chords, controlled by a bank of effects pedals; vocalist Attila Csihar, famous for his time as singer for notorious and controversial black metal band Mayhem, ritualistically intones invented syllables that echo monastic chants; experimental musician Oren Ambarchi extracts strange sounds from his own looped guitar before moving to a drumkit to propel a scattered, urgent rhythm. Momentum overtaking him, a drumstick slips from Ambarchi’s hand, he breaks free of the drum kit, grabs for a beater, turns, and smashes the gong at the centre of the stage. For two long seconds the all-encompassing rumble that has amassed throughout the performance drones on with a kind of relentless inertia, still without a sonic acknowledgement of the visual climax. Finally, the pulsating wave from the heavily amplified gong reverberates through the corporate body of the audience, felt in physical vibration more than heard as sound. The musicians leave the stage, their abandoned instruments still expelling squalling sounds which gradually begin to dissipate. Listeners breathe out, perhaps open their eyes, raise their heads, shift their feet and awaken enough to clap and shout appreciation, before turning to friends or strangers, reaching for phrases and gestures, often in a vocabulary of ritual, mysticism and transcendence, which might become touchstones for recollection and communication of their individual and shared experience.

I focus closely on his post- metal band Amenra, through whose music, symbolic and ritual performances – like suspension and other types of flesh hook insertions – Colin wants to convey his own spirituality and experience of existential pain. Duality of life and existence of immanent life’s pain is by him and the other members of CoR taken as a serious and grave spiritual theme, although it can be used as potential for process of healing through catharsis (both for the band members and for their audience). Moreover, I focus on Colin’s own personal spirituality with links to its broader connotations in context of CoR’s music, art, and performances – especially the extreme rituals. I will also briefly introduce and analyze so called “modern primitive movement”, through its philosophy became bodily pain sacred and extreme rituals are taken (beside else) as means to transcendental state. The event is dedicated to Philippe Leonard and Thisquietarmy as a tribute to the long-term collaboration on experimental audiovisual of this Canadian duo. 2x16mm+guitar+effects is an opportunity to see in action Philippe Leonard, influenced by the great tradition of North American experimental cinema, whose practice on film (16mm and 35mm) led him to important collaborations, including the contribution to the visuals of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and the pioneering Thisquietarmy music project. The Canadian duo works in great synergy on the possibility of expanded cinema. An alchemy of cinema and sound, working on the matter and on devices (16mm film projectors/electricity, guitar and pedals) for a journey that explores the possibilities hidden in the image and its serial essence. Philippe Leonard, canadian experimental film-maker lives and works in Montreal. His artistic practice focuses on still and moving images, through film, photography, performance and installations. His theoretical and aesthetic reflections focus on the complex temporality of still and moving images, the spectral dimension of physical spaces, and expanded documentary practices.
