  • Peace of Westphalia Treaty of Versailles
Peace of Westphalia The Peace of Westphalia (German: Westfälischer Friede) was a series of peace treaties signed between May and October 1648 in Osnabrück and Münster. These treaties ended the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648) in the Holy Roman Empire, and theEighty Years' War (1568–1648) between Spain and the Dutch Republic, with Spain formally recognizing the independence of the Dutch Republic. The Peace of Westphalia involved the Holy Roman Emperor, Ferdinand III; the Kingdom of Spain; the Kingdom of France; theSwedish Empire; the Dutch Republic; the Princes of the Holy Roman Empire; and sovereigns of the free imperial cities. The treaties that comprised the peace settlement were: The Peace of Münster [1] between the Dutch Republic and the Kingdom of Spain on 30 January 1648, ratified in Münster on 15 May 1648; and Two complementary treaties both signed on 24 October 1648, namely: The Treaty of Münster (Instrumentum Pacis Monasteriensis, IPM),[2] between the Holy Roman Emperor and France and their respective allies. The Treaty of Osnabrück (Instrumentum Pacis Osnabrugensis, IPO),[3] involving the Holy Roman Empire, the Kingdom of France, Sweden and their respective allies. The treaties did not restore peace throughout Europe, but they did create a basis for national self- determination. The Peace of Westphalia established the precedent of peaces established by diplomatic congress,[4] [5] and a new system of political order in central Europe, later called Westphalian sovereignty, based upon the concept of co-existing sovereign states. Inter-state aggression was to be held in check by a balance of power. A prejudice was established against interference in another nation's domestic affairs.

Steinberg) ABSTRACT This thesis seeks to examine the factors that resulted in the fall of the Second Polish Republic and track its downward trajectory. Examining the Second Republic, from its creation in 1918 to its loss of recognition in 1945, reveals that its demise began long before German tanks violated Poland’s frontiers on 1 September, 1939. Commencing with the competing ideas of what a Polish state would be and continuing through the political and foreign policy developments of the inter-war years, a pattern begins to emerge - that of the Poles’ search for their place in modern Europe. The lead up to the Second World War and the invasion of Poland by the German-Soviet Alliance demonstrates the failure of the Poles to achieve that place.

  • Impact of the Locarno Treaty on European Politics
African Journal of Law, Political Research and Administration ISSN: 2689-5102 Volume 3, Issue 2, 2020 (pp. 12-18) www.abjournals.org IMPACT OF THE LOCARNO TREATY ON EUROPEAN POLITICS Sheriff Ghali Ibrahim, Farouk Ibrahim Bibi-Farouk and Ntong Ekaete Aloysius Department of Political Scince and International Relations, University of Abuja, Abuja ABSTRACT : The paper examined the Locarno treaty of 1925, which tried to establish peace among some central European states, such as Germany, France, Britain, Belgium and Italy among others. The paper applied the historical-descriptive research of library instrument to generate data, and findings show that the treaties have succeeded in maintaining peace within the region especially with the creation of a demilitarized zone of Rhineland for years, but the French pressure on Germany to be punished resulted in the German bitterness and felt that the treaty was against them, which paved a way for the outbreak of the WW II. The paper concludes that the Locarno treaty can be described as a great tool that Germany used to bring back stability both economic and social. Although it didn’t last very long due to the great depression and following the WWII it can be seen as a great buffer period that Germany used to become a super power once again and she truly achieved these aims. Locarno pact also had an impact on the Nazi party in Germany that came out of its ashes like a phoenix once it was clear that the Locarno pact failed or was outdated. The paper recommends that there is the need not to favour any nation against another or others in terms of conflict or resolving such not only in Europe, but in all places around the world.

  • Historicizing German Depictions of Poles, 1919-1934 THESIS
Das Deutsche Polenbild: Historicizing German Depictions of Poles, 1919-1934 THESIS Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Paul N Niebrzydowski Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2012 Master's Examination Committee: Alan Beyerchen, Advisor James Bartholomew Christopher Otter Copyright by Paul N Niebrzydowski 2012 Abstract After the armistice that marked the end of the Great War, the continuing conflict on Germany’s eastern border contributed to the weakened German self-image. Poles, newly confident and militaristic after having witnessed the rebirth of their nation, stood as a perceived, and oftentimes real, threat to the German state and identity. The present work explores how the experience of conflict between Germans and Poles on Germany’s eastern border contributed to a change in inflection of German stereotypes of Poles. Though still bearing the mark of 19 th century stereotypes, which cast the Poles as backward and fit to be colonized, interwar propaganda added an image of Poles as an aggressive and militaristic threat to the German identity. The uprising in Posen and the administration of the Upper Silesian plebiscite stood out in Germans' minds as examples of Germany's weakening sovereignty, not only in the face of its neighbor, but also at the hands of the Allies. When the Nazis came to power, they employed a renewed rhetoric of colonization of the east. Whereas Germany's colonies had been lost after the Great War, the Third Reich hoped to once again colonize the east.

2.7 The international response to German aggression, 19331940 Conceptual understanding Key concepts Continuity Consequence Signifcance Key question Examine the international communitys response to German aggression. The international reaction to the actions o Germany, 1 93539, has been the subject o much criticism and debate amongst historians. A cartoon by David Low, Whats Czechoslovakia to me, anyway? As you read this next section, consider the 18 July 1938 options available to Britain and France at each stage o German expansion, and the extent to which the decisions that Britain and France took encouraged German aggression. What was the international reaction to German rearmament? As we have seen, there was sympathy in Britain towards Germanys desire to reverse certain aspects o the Treaty o Versailles. Following Germanys withdrawal rom the Disarmament Conerence and the League o Nations in 1 933 (see page 1 57) , Britain worked hard to get Germany back into the conerence. It proposed that Germany should be allowed to have an army o 200,000 (rather than the 1 00,000 stipulated in the Treaty o Versailles), that France should also reduce its army to 200,000, and that Germany should be allowed an air orce hal the size o the French air orce. However, the realization in 1 935 that Germany was introducing conscription and already had an air orce ended attempts by the British and French to bring Germany back into the League o Nations and to establish new conditions or rearmament. Germanys actions blatantly contravened the terms o the Treaty o Versailles. This was obviously a concern to the other powers, who could see that Germany was now catching up militarily.
