As Doug observed – these are not your “Quigley Down Under” or infamous Adobe Walls cartridge-firing Sharps – these are the breech-loading percussion-fired Sharps that fought in the American Civil War. They are the Lawrence Patent Sharps. There are actually two versions of the Sharps Model 1859 – a rifle and a carbine – with many variations. They were produced primarily in .52 caliber, but were also made in .54 and .56. During the Civil War, Sharps produced more than 80,000 carbines and 10,000 rifles. Doug provided several examples – condition ranging from barn and stream-found relics to beautiful examples of weapons over 150 years old. Historical examples included one inscribed with “Rappahannock Station” (now Remington, VA), a “Coffee Grinder” trials gun that had a no-kidding coffee grinder incorporated in the stock (not well- thought of and not adopted by the Army!), a two-barrel conversion (rifle over shotgun), a carbine linked to the Massachusetts cavalry that spent time chasing Moseby, and one that was at the Battle of Gettysburg (mentioned in a soldiers diary).

Det skal være effektivitet og kvalitet i forvaltningen, samtidig som vi skal ha publikumstilfredshet. Tillatelse til å eie skytevåpen kan gis til personer som er skikket og kan dokumentere behov. Privat eie av skytevåpen skaper behov for å sikre samfunnet mot misbruk. Våpenforvaltningen er virkemiddelet for å hindre misbruk. Samtidig som forvaltningen skal forebygge ulovlige handlinger med våpen, er den en publikums- tjeneste. Samfunnet må derfor søke å finne en god balanse mellom den enkeltes rett til å erverve skytevåpen til aktverdige formål, mot andres rett til å være trygg for misbruk. Reglene for våpenforvaltning er nedfelt i lov, forskrift og rundskriv. Våpentillatelser og tilbakekall av tillatelser er enkeltvedtak. Det er derfor viktig at ansatte i politiet har en felles forståelse av hva skytevåpen er, hvordan vi klassifiserer dem og hvilke våpen som lovlig kan innvilges på bakgrunn av ulike behov. Hensikten med dette kompendiet er å gi økt fagkunnskap om ulike våpentyper og ammunisjon, samt en oversikt over skytterorganisasjonenes godkjente programmer og bruksområder. One ex¬ planation has been that the leaders were blind to the in¬ creased power of the defense brought about by the machine gran, smokeless powder, magazine rifle, and quick-firing artillery. Perhaps hindsight has made it too easy to con¬ demn the actions of World War I generals and say* "The re¬ sult could have been no other» the American Civil War, the Russo-Turkish War, the Boer War, and the Russo-Japanese War abound with examples of the increased power of the de¬ fense.     VIRGINIA GUN COLLECTORS ASSOCIATION GLOSSARY OF FIREARMS COLLECTING TERMS Marc Gorelick VGCA A ACCOUTREMENT - Equipment carried by soldiers on the outside of their uniform, such as belts, ammunition pouches, bayonet scabbards, or canteens, but not weapons. ACCURIZE or ACCURIZING - The process of altering a firearm to improve its accuracy. ACTION - The mechanism and method that manipulates, loads, locks, extracts and ejects cartridges and/or seals the breech. Actions are broadly classified as either manual or self-loading and are generally categorized by the type of mechanism used. Manual actions are single shot or repeater. Single shot actions include dropping block (tilting or falling) rolling block, break, hinged (such as a trapdoor), and bolt. Repeater actions include revolver, bolt (turn-bolt or strait-pull), lever, pump and slide. Self-loading actions are semiautomatic or automatic. ADJUSTABLE SIGHT - A firearm sight that can be adjusted for windage and/or elevation so that the shooter’s point of aim and the projectile’s point of impact coincide at the target. Only the rear sight is adjustable on a majority of firearms, but front sights may also be adjustable. AIR CHAMBER (See LIGHTENING GROOVE) – A 19th century U.S. Ordnance Department the term for a groove cut out of the inside of a rifle’s wooden forend or a carbine’s forearm in order to make the firearm lighter. AIR GUN – A long arm or handgun that uses compressed air to fire a projectile. The earliest known air guns date to the 16th century. The compressed air was kept in a chamber in the buttstock or in a round metal ball attached to the underside of the barrel near the breech.
