info # 61 _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ PLANTS FOR WET AREAS Oregonians are no strangers to water, but it seems like some places are just too moist to grow anything. For one reason or another, be it general drainage, high water tables, poor soils, or runoff patterns, some areas never seem to dry. The best idea is to try and fix the water problem by diverting runoff, adding subsurface drainage, or simply amending your soil. This doesn’t always work though, so here is a list of plants tolerant of those moist conditions. Keep in mind that although they will tolerate moisture, these plants will still need some drainage, very few plants can survive in standing water. TREES Acer rubrum- Red Maple and its cultivars Betula varieties- Birch Fraxinus americana and F. pennsylvanica- Ash varieties (NOT Raywood!) Liquidambar styraciflua- Sweetgum (avoid compacted soils) Magnolia virginiana- Sweet Bay Magnolia (None of the others, though) Nyssa sylvatica- Sour gum, Black Tupelo Populus varieties- Poplar Populus tremuloides- Quaking Aspen (Okay in moist soil, but NOT heavy and poorly drained soil) Salix varieties- Willow Stewartia- will take moist soil, drainage helps There are only a handful of conifer trees that will tolerate wet soils. Usually, a conifer tree will not be recommended because of this fact. In order for most conifer trees to thrive, there must be fair drainage in the area. The contexts also yielded thousands of remains of fauna, flora, Human adaptability lithic artefacts and mineral pigments, associated with extensive and spectacular rock pictographs that adorn the Rock art rock shelter walls. This article presents the first data from the region, dating the timing of colonisation, de- scribing subsistence strategies, and examines human adaptation to these transitioning landscapes. The results increase our understanding of the global expansion of human populations, enabling assessment of key inter- actions between people and the environment that appear to have lasting repercussions for one of the most important and biologically diverse ecosystems in the world. -

German Views of Amazonia through the Centuries Amazonia has been called “…the most exuberant celebration of life ever to have existed on earth.”i It has been a botanical, zoological and hydrographic party for the ages. Over the past five centuries, German conquistadors, missionaries, explorers, empresses, naturalists, travelers, immigrants and cultural interpreters have been conspicuous among Europeans fascinated by the biodiversity and native peoples of an incomparably vast basin stretching from the Andes to the Atlantic, from the Guiana Highlands to Peru and Bolivia, from Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador to the mouth of the Amazon at the Brazilian equator. Exactly two thousand years ago, in the summer of the year 9, a decisive victory of Germanic tribes over occupying Roman legions took place in a forest near a swamp. With that the Roman Empire began its final decline, and some would say the event was the seed of germination for the eventual German nation.
