NHESP is responsible for the conservation and protection of hundreds of species that are not hunted, fished, trapped, or commercially harvested in the state. The Program's highest priority is protecting the 176 species of vertebrate and invertebrate animals and 259 species of native plants that are officially listed as Endangered, Threatened or of Special Concern in Massachusetts. Endangered species conservation in Massachusetts depends on you! A major source of funding for the protection of rare and endangered species comes from voluntary donations on state income tax forms. Contributions go to the Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Fund, which provides a portion of the operating budget for the Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Program. info # 61 _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ PLANTS FOR WET AREAS Oregonians are no strangers to water, but it seems like some places are just too moist to grow anything. For one reason or another, be it general drainage, high water tables, poor soils, or runoff patterns, some areas never seem to dry. The best idea is to try and fix the water problem by diverting runoff, adding subsurface drainage, or simply amending your soil. This doesn’t always work though, so here is a list of plants tolerant of those moist conditions. Keep in mind that although they will tolerate moisture, these plants will still need some drainage, very few plants can survive in standing water. TREES Acer rubrum- Red Maple and its cultivars Betula varieties- Birch Fraxinus americana and F. pennsylvanica- Ash varieties (NOT Raywood!) Liquidambar styraciflua- Sweetgum (avoid compacted soils) Magnolia virginiana- Sweet Bay Magnolia (None of the others, though) Nyssa sylvatica- Sour gum, Black Tupelo Populus varieties- Poplar Populus tremuloides- Quaking Aspen (Okay in moist soil, but NOT heavy and poorly drained soil) Salix varieties- Willow Stewartia- will take moist soil, drainage helps There are only a handful of conifer trees that will tolerate wet soils. Usually, a conifer tree will not be recommended because of this fact. In order for most conifer trees to thrive, there must be fair drainage in the area. Examples of more moisture tolerant conifer trees are Metasequoia spp.- Dawn Redwood Taxodium spp.- Bald Cypress Thuja spp.- Thuja SHRUBS Andromeda polifolia- Bog Rosemary Bamboo Calycanthus- Allspice Clethra varieties- Summersweet Cornus varieties (Shrub type only)- Shrub Dogwoods (NOT Tree types) Gaultheria shallon- Salal Itea virginica and varieties- Sweetspire Leucothoe Salix varieties- Willow Sambucus canadensis and varieties- Elderberry Symphoricarpos- Snowberry Viburnum- Deciduous types V. -

A Horticulture Information article from the Wisconsin Master Gardener website, posted 5 Sept 2008 Fountain Grass There are many species of the grass genus Pennisetum, including the agronomic crops pearl millet and elephant grass (used for forage and now for biofuel), plus numerous landscape ornamentals, including ‘Purple Majesty’ orna- mental millet (P. glaucum). Fountain grass, P. alopecuroi- des, is a perennial ornamental grass, with various cultivars hardy from zone 4 or 5 through 10. This warm season grass native to meadows and open woods, alongside streams of Eastern Asia (mainly China and Japan) and Australia has fi nely textured foliage and elegant form. And the leaves and fl ower spikes swaying in the breeze adds movement to the landscape. The deep green foliage forms a dense but graceful clump 12-48” tall, depending on the cultivar. Growth is upright at Fountain grass in a landscape. fi rst, then the leaves arch at maturity, resembling a foun- tain. The length and width of the long, tapering, subtly ser- rated blades varies greatly among the cultivars. The leaves turn orange-bronze in autumn, eventually fading to a dull beige. But the foliage remains fairly upright to provide some winter interest. The deep green leaves of fountain grass turn orange-bronze in autumn, and fade to dull beige. The infl oresences do not last through the winter. In late summer showy, white to pink, copper or purple fl ower spikes are produced above the leaves. The fl owers are concentrated in the narrow bottle-brush form on the end of the spike and seeds are hidden within the bristles of the fuzzy-looking infl orescences. -

A LIST OF THE GRASSES AND GRASSLIKE PLANTS OF THE OAK OPENINGS, LUCAS COUNTY, OHIO1 NATHAN WILLIAM EASTERLY Department of Biology, Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio 4-3403 ABSTRACT This report is the second of a series of articles to be prepared as a second "Flora of the Oak Openings." The study represents a comprehensive survey of members of the Cyperaceae, Gramineae, Juncaceae, Sparganiaceae, and Xyridaceae in the Oak Openings region. Of the 202 species listed in this study, 34 species reported by Moseley in 1928 were not found during the present investigation. Fifty-seven species found by the present investi- gator were not observed or reported by Moseley. Many of these species or varieties are rare and do not represent a stable part of the flora. Changes in species present or in fre- quency of occurrence of species collected by both Moseley and Easterly may be explained mainly by the alteration of habitats as the Oak Openings region becomes increasingly urbanized or suburbanized. Some species have increased in frequency on the floodplain of Swan Creek, in wet ditches and on the banks of the Norfolk and Western Railroad right-of-way, along newly constructed roadsides, or on dry sandy sites. INTRODUCTION The grass family ranks third among the large plant families of the world. The family ranks number one as far as total numbers of plants that cover fields, mead- ows, or roadsides are concerned. No other family is used as extensively to pro- vide food or shelter or to create a beautiful landscape. The sedge family does not fare as well in terms of commercial importance, but the sedges do make avail- able forage and food for wild fowl and they do contribute plant cover in wet areas where other plants would not be as well adapted. -
