There were continued local government battles with the state and the feds, the nine-year head of the Keys’water utility suddenly quit (seemingly forced out),fiscal problems continued at the School District, Marathon got a new hos- pital operator and Key West dealt with its own issues. It’s always instructive to look at the major stories of the past year as a new year dawns, and that’s what the Keynoter is doing today, this coming Saturday and on our website, www.KeysNet.com. In today’s edition, you’ll find stories about distin- guished residents who died, what happened on the county front and where the village of Islamorada stands. On the web, you’ll see what happened the past 12 months at the Key Largo Wastewater Treatment District. Coming are looks back at the past year in Key West, Marathon, the Mosquito Control District, the School District, Florida Keys Community College, the U.S. Navy, the environment and fishing. 2011: A LOOK BACK New year’s here, old issues remain FEMA, No Name, at homes covered by FEMA’s This photo, posted and shared on numerous Facebook pages, show the plane sitting in shallow water after the crash. Indianapolis First Friends Meeting embarked on this journey over three years ago. We moved from a hope and dream of a program such as this to a reality with a completed period of study when eleven of our youth were affirmed by our Meeting in June 2015. This ten-month program of study and experience was created for our young people to help them explore their spirituality, discover their identity as Quakers and to inform them of Quaker history, faith and practice. While Quakers do not confirm creeds or statements made for them at baptism, etc, we felt it important that young people be informed and af - firmed in their understanding of who they are as Friends.

The Florida Current The University Press of Florida Newsletter January 2008 Taking the Plunge: On Tour with Lu Vickers When the subject of book tours comes up, my writer friends tend to fall into two camps. One feels that with all the changes in the book industry, writers must do everything they can to promote their work— including setting up and financing their own book tours. The second camp feels that book tours are more trouble and expense than they’re worth. I fell into the second camp, and not just because I’m shy. My only experience with a book tour, prior to the one I made on behalf of Weeki Wachee, City of Mermaids was a jaunt across Florida with a friend to promote a book in which we both had stories. I had a blast with From left to right: Urban Think! Bookstore manager Jim my friend, but we only read to a total of seven women and a handful of Crescitelli, Ginger Stanley Hallowell (former WW mermaid), sleeping cats. I don’t think we even sold any books. So, I was a bit leery Holly Hall (one of the mermaid twins), Lu Vickers, Dolly when UPF’s publicist Romi Gutierrez mentioned that a book store in Key Heltsley (the other mermaid twin), Darlest Thomas (former West was interested in having me down for a signing. Matecumbe James A. Michener Click here if your download doesn"t start automatically Matecumbe James A. Michener Matecumbe James A. Michener Pulitzer Prize-winning author James A. Michener was in his sixties when he began traveling frequently to the Florida Keys. One result of those visits was the novel Matecumbe, named after two of the islands that comprise the town of Islamorada, located approximately half way between Miami and Key West. Never before published, Matecumbe features many of the hallmarks of Michener's best work, including detailed descriptions of place. However, the plot is much more intimate than that found in most of his large- scale, epic historical novels. Focusing on the parallel lives of a woman and her mother, both divorced, Michener spent his creative energy on character development and allegorical storytelling. Random House, his publisher, wasn't pleased, and wanted the mega-best-selling author to concentrate on producing "heavyweight" books like Hawaii and Centennial. Matecumbe seemed too much in the vein of his earlier romance novel, Sayonara. So it sat in a drawer until, eventually, Michener gifted it--including the copyright- -to Joe Avenick, his friend and former ghostwriter. Avenick played a key role in the research and writing of Sports in America and Chesapeake, and introduced Michener to Melissa (Missy) DeMaio, who soon became the primary reason for Michener's increasingly frequent visits to the Keys. Biographers and critics have long agreed that Michener's personality and his characters were both affected by his relationship with DeMaio. As perhaps his most encompassing autobiographical novel, and the one written in the midst of these changes, Matecumbe provides what may be tantalizing glimpses into Michener's life.

  • Thalassia Testudinum) Demographics in South Florida
Limnol. Oceanogr., 46(5), 2001, 1077–1090 ᭧ 2001, by the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography, Inc. Large-scale patterns in seagrass (Thalassia testudinum) demographics in south Florida Bradley J. Peterson1 and James W. Fourqurean Department of Biological Sciences and Southeast Environmental Research Center, Florida International University, University Park, Miami, Florida 33199 Abstract An examination of the population age structure of 118 spatially separated subpopulations of Thalassia testudinum over the extent of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) during a 2-yr period revealed significant spatial variation in short shoot (SS) demographic characteristics and population dynamics. Shoot age was determined for 12,031 SS. The number of leaf scars on individual shoots was converted to shoot age by use of observed seasonally and spatially variable leaf emergence rates. The yearly mean leaf emergence rate was 0.0295 Ϯ 0.0128 leaves SSϪ1 dϪ1 (Ϯ1 SD), and the median age of counted shoots was ϳ5 yr. A significant relationship between asexual reproductive effort and gross recruitment of SS into the populations (r2 ϭ 0.15, P ϭ 0.001) and between mortality of SS and gross recruitment (r2 ϭ 0.72, P Ͻ 0.001) existed. Thus, the greatest risk of mortality occurred in areas where gross recruitment was highest. The net population growth for T. testudinum within the boundaries of FKNMS was stable (mean ϭϪ0.006 Ϯ 0.089 yrϪ1). However, areas within FKNMS fluctuated between positive and negative net growth rates (Ϫ0.20–0.50 yrϪ1). The power of such large-scale observations is the ability to identify areas of management concern and to frame questions that address the controlling mechanisms that influence these regions of fluctuating population growth.

FREE INQUIRY IN CREATIVE SOCIOLOGY Volume 39, Number 1, Spring 2011 SOCIAL SHEPHERDING AND MORAL NETS AS FOUND IN SOME NOVELS BY FYODOR DOSTOEVSKY, JAMES A. MICHENER, GEORGE ORWELL, B. F. SKINNER, AND C. S. FORESTER Ralph G. O'Sullivan Chillicothe, IL Abstract This article uses selected passages from the Old and New Testaments to illustrate the common presence of good shepherd and moral net themes in some of the novels by Fyodor Dostoevsky, James A. Michener, George Orwell, B.F. Skinner, and C.S. Forester. Traditional sociology texts and classroom lectures rightly address such topics as normal parts of social life, but usually objectively; novelists do the same, yet with much more passion. While no "a-ha" moments, statistical data, or tests of hypotheses are offered , here, students of sociology are encouraged to follow Ogburn's advice to go '' outside traditional boundaries and sources of knowledge to find sociology and have fun doing so, because the stable templates of social organization are there to be found and made available to others.
