Michener Pulitzer Prize-winning author James A. Michener was in his sixties when he began traveling frequently to the Florida Keys. One result of those visits was the novel Matecumbe, named after two of the islands that comprise the town of Islamorada, located approximately half way between Miami and Key West. Never before published, Matecumbe features many of the hallmarks of Michener's best work, including detailed descriptions of place. However, the plot is much more intimate than that found in most of his large- scale, epic historical novels. Focusing on the parallel lives of a woman and her mother, both divorced, Michener spent his creative energy on character development and allegorical storytelling. Random House, his publisher, wasn't pleased, and wanted the mega-best-selling author to concentrate on producing "heavyweight" books like Hawaii and Centennial. Matecumbe seemed too much in the vein of his earlier romance novel, Sayonara. So it sat in a drawer until, eventually, Michener gifted it--including the copyright- -to Joe Avenick, his friend and former ghostwriter. Avenick played a key role in the research and writing of Sports in America and Chesapeake, and introduced Michener to Melissa (Missy) DeMaio, who soon became the primary reason for Michener's increasingly frequent visits to the Keys. Biographers and critics have long agreed that Michener's personality and his characters were both affected by his relationship with DeMaio. As perhaps his most encompassing autobiographical novel, and the one written in the midst of these changes, Matecumbe provides what may be tantalizing glimpses into Michener's life. The publication of Matecumbe, in the centennial year of the author's birth, will be a boon for fans who have longed for more Michener in the ten years since his death. One feels that with all the changes in the book industry, writers must do everything they can to promote their work— including setting up and financing their own book tours. The second camp feels that book tours are more trouble and expense than they’re worth. I fell into the second camp, and not just because I’m shy. My only experience with a book tour, prior to the one I made on behalf of Weeki Wachee, City of Mermaids was a jaunt across Florida with a friend to promote a book in which we both had stories. Fourqurean Department of Biological Sciences and Southeast Environmental Research Center, Florida International University, University Park, Miami, Florida 33199 Abstract An examination of the population age structure of 118 spatially separated subpopulations of Thalassia testudinum over the extent of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) during a 2-yr period revealed significant spatial variation in short shoot (SS) demographic characteristics and population dynamics. Shoot age was determined for 12,031 SS. The number of leaf scars on individual shoots was converted to shoot age by use of observed seasonally and spatially variable leaf emergence rates. The yearly mean leaf emergence rate was 0.0295 Ϯ 0.0128 leaves SSϪ1 dϪ1 (Ϯ1 SD), and the median age of counted shoots was ϳ5 yr. A significant relationship between asexual reproductive effort and gross recruitment of SS into the populations (r2 ϭ 0.15, P ϭ 0.001) and between mortality of SS and gross recruitment (r2 ϭ 0.72, P Ͻ 0.001) existed. Thus, the greatest risk of mortality occurred in areas where gross recruitment was highest. The net population growth for T. testudinum within the boundaries of FKNMS was stable (mean ϭϪ0.006 Ϯ 0.089 yrϪ1). However, areas within FKNMS fluctuated between positive and negative net growth rates (Ϫ0.20–0.50 yrϪ1). The power of such large-scale observations is the ability to identify areas of management concern and to frame questions that address the controlling mechanisms that influence these regions of fluctuating population growth.

O'Sullivan Chillicothe, IL Abstract This article uses selected passages from the Old and New Testaments to illustrate the common presence of good shepherd and moral net themes in some of the novels by Fyodor Dostoevsky, James A. Michener, George Orwell, B.F. Skinner, and C.S. Forester. Traditional sociology texts and classroom lectures rightly address such topics as normal parts of social life, but usually objectively; novelists do the same, yet with much more passion.
