INTRODUCTION The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov is considered one of the best and most highly regarded novels to come out of Russia during the Soviet era. The book weaves together satire and realism, art and religion, history and contemporary social values. It features three story lines. The main story, taking place in Russia of the 1930s, concerns a visit by the devil, referred to as Professor Woland, and four of his assistants during Holy Week; they use black magic to play tricks on those who cross their paths. Another story line features the Master, who has been languishing in an insane asylum, and his love, Margarita, who seeks Woland's help in being reunited with the Master. A third story, which is presented as a novel written by the Master, depicts the crucifixion of Yeshua Ha-Notsri, or Jesus Christ, by Pontius Pilate. Using the fantastic elements of the story, Bulgakov satirizes the greed and corruption of Stalin's Soviet Union, in which people's actions were controlled as well as their perceptions of reality. -

Indianapolis First Friends Meeting embarked on this journey over three years ago. We moved from a hope and dream of a program such as this to a reality with a completed period of study when eleven of our youth were affirmed by our Meeting in June 2015. This ten-month program of study and experience was created for our young people to help them explore their spirituality, discover their identity as Quakers and to inform them of Quaker history, faith and practice. Accepted: April, 2013. Summary The study of the novel The Master and Margarita is focused on the interpretation and the making of a character that Bulgakov created based on the biblical figure. The analytical method used is a comparative one, and the study integrates a deep comparison of the narration techniques and interpretations of the figure in the light of mystic and occult culture. The comparison between the biblical archetype of the character of Pontius Pilate and the re-creation and interpretation of the character in the novel is not just a dry comparison, but it aims to climb over the culture it represents, Christian culture and ethics, regarding the concept of good and evil. As the narrator of the novel changes focus on different subjects, and since the central figure of the storytelling differs, it was more important for us to study the figure of Pontius Pilate than Yeshua (Christ). -

My argument is that the sense of displacement and preoccupation with "other" worlds which characterise these novels reflect a national tradition which positions Australian life at the "edge" of a culturally and politically dominant "centre." Such a perspective is not so much geographical as discursive; Australia was first defined, after all, through a European discourse which assumed its own centrality. -

The Florida Current The University Press of Florida Newsletter January 2008 Taking the Plunge: On Tour with Lu Vickers When the subject of book tours comes up, my writer friends tend to fall into two camps. One feels that with all the changes in the book industry, writers must do everything they can to promote their work— including setting up and financing their own book tours. The second camp feels that book tours are more trouble and expense than they’re worth. I fell into the second camp, and not just because I’m shy. My only experience with a book tour, prior to the one I made on behalf of Weeki Wachee, City of Mermaids was a jaunt across Florida with a friend to promote a book in which we both had stories. I had a blast with From left to right: Urban Think! Bookstore manager Jim my friend, but we only read to a total of seven women and a handful of Crescitelli, Ginger Stanley Hallowell (former WW mermaid), sleeping cats. I don’t think we even sold any books. So, I was a bit leery Holly Hall (one of the mermaid twins), Lu Vickers, Dolly when UPF’s publicist Romi Gutierrez mentioned that a book store in Key Heltsley (the other mermaid twin), Darlest Thomas (former West was interested in having me down for a signing. WW mermaid), and Frank Billingsley of the Florida Humani- ties Council. My partner, on the other hand, had no qualms at all. She said one word: Hemingway. As if a trek to Key West would somehow catapult me into his company. -

I began a journey through literature, filled with joy in reading and sharing an author’s words of faith, hope, and love of God with children. This journey has led me to creating and sharing a list of books containing virtuous themes woven throughout the author’s words. Children are impressionable. They are influenced by what is read to them and what they read. Their world today is far more open to many things through TV, music, and the World Wide Web. Teachers experience this influence from the day a child arrives in Pre-Kindergarten.
