Gold Deposits Near Quartzsite, Arizona
GOLD DEPOSITS NEAR QUARTZSITE, ARIZONA. By EDWARD L. JONES, Jr. INTRODUCTION. This report is based on information obtained by the writer in April and May, 1914,. while he was classifying the lands in the Colorado River Indian Reservation. The area considered includes the south ern part of the reservation and the region extending eastward from the reservation to the Plomosa Mountains. The geology and ore deposits within the reservation were more particularly studied, the time allotted to the examination being too short to permit detailed work in the area farther east. For information concerning placers outside the reservation the writer is indebted to Mr. E. L. Du- fourcq, who conducted the testing of placer .ground near Quartz- site. Mr. W. W. McCoy, of San Bernardino, kindly furnished the early history of the La Paz district, and Mr. Edward Beggs, of Quartzsite, gave much useful information regarding the La Paz placers. In 1909 Howland Bancroft x made a geologic reconnaissance of northern Yuma County .and much of the country around Quartz- site and farther west to the reservation line. In his report he men tions the La Paz district and briefly describes placers in the Plomosa Mountains and prospects on gold-bearing quartz veins in the vicinity of Quartzsite. The map that accompanies the present report (PI. IV) is compiled from the records of the General Land Office. The area within the reservation has been subdivided into sections; the land east of the reservation is unsurveyed. The mountainous areas in the reserva tion are indicated on this map by patterns showing the geologic rock formations; the mountains in the unsurveyed area are repre sented approximately by hachures. -

Geologic Framework of West-Central Arizona
Arizona Geological Society Digest, Volume XII, 1980 1 Geologic Framework of West-Central Arizona by Stephen J. Reynolds 1 Abstract The geology of west-central Arizona is complex and understood only in a reconnais sance fashion. The oldest rocks are Precambrian (approximately 1. 7 b. y . B.P.) gneiss, schist, quartzite, and amphibolite, which in the Precambrian were metamorphosed, de formed, and intruded by several generations of plutons. These rocks and structures are unconformably overlain by a cratonic sequence of Paleozoic carbonate and clastic strata. Representatives of Mesozoic rocks include intermediate to felsic volcanic and plutonic rocks of probably mid-Mesozoic age and overlying thick sections of clastic rocks, which are intruded by Late Cretaceous plutons. At least three deformational and metamorphic events of probably Cretaceous and Tertiary ages affected the region after deposition of the Mesozoic clastic rocks. Evidence for Tertiary mylonitization and subsequent dislocational phenomena is exposed in at least four mountain ranges that have characteristics of metamorphic core complexes. Dislocation was accompanied by listric normal faulting and tilting of mid- Tertiary volcanic and sedimentary sections. Late Tertiary Basin and Range faulting occurred after 15 m. y. B. P. and has eVidently been inactive for at least several million years. TITLE: YCLD Ephemera Collection DATE RANGE: 1870’s - current PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 89 Linear Feet (176 boxes) PROVENANCE: In 2013 all ephemeral and vertical file materials from multiple donors and locations were evaluated and consolidated to form a unified ephemera collection that could grow into the future. Recognition should be given to the thousands of donors and thousands of volunteer hours who collected and organized these materials since 1965. RESTRICTIONS: None CREDIT LINE: Yuma County Library Ephemera Collection, Yuma County Library District, Yuma, Arizona PROCESSSED BY: John Irwin, 2013-2014 SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE: This is the largest archival collection in the holdings. It represents a wide range of social, economic, cultural and ethnic communities reflecting the spectrum of human activity, past and present. The Yuma County Historical Society began collecting archival materials in 1965. This effort continued after it became a branch of the Arizona Historical Society in 1971, and later the AHS-Rio Colorado Division. Over the decades various methods were employed by staff and volunteers to organize segments of the materials. The bulk of this collection is based on the organizational structure adopted in the 1980s. Subheadings have been added to make this large body of material more accessible to researchers. Between 1993 and 2012 volunteers also assembled and organized twelve linear feet of newspaper articles primarily from the Yuma Daily Sun. These contemporary articles have been added within the appropriate headings. It is arranged alphabetically both by geographic place names and subject headings that range from broad to more specific. Its scope covers the breadth of human activities and knowledge of the Lower Colorado River area of Arizona, especially Yuma and La Paz Counties, from the Spanish period to the present. -

Introduction Welcome to the Desert! In the American Southwest lies a vast region of moderate-to-extreme desolation encompassed by the Sonoran Desert, the Mojave Desert, and the Basin and Range Province . Die-hard folks (mostly from the East coast and the South, but some from abroad) over the past five http ://www.geog.ucsb.edu/-dylan/history .htm 11/29/00 Tales of the Desert Page 2 of 11 centuries have explored, exploited, prospered and profited from the land of the West. However, some have been lured by the sheer thought of gold prospecting towards an easy life . In most cases, though, amateur treasure hunters failed to make ends meet. Those who did find anything of value were not guaranteed the pleasure of living off their finds. A good number of prospectors -- after encountering good luck in making a strike, ventured out again to find their horde and extract greater amounts with more provisions - - and were never seen or heard from again, their secret of desert treasure lost forever. B ut sometimes not. All too many lost gold mine stories stem from a similar kind of event: a staggering, dusty, sunburned, near-dead prospector arriving in an outpost town with a sackful of ore, confiding his information on his deathbed to an equally gold-struck person. Not surprisingly, the confidant almost always never finds the site. -
