Approximately 2,195,415 acres spanning desert portions of Inyo, San Bernardino, Riverside, and Imperial Counties were mapped between 2014 and 2016. The primary purpose was to develop an accurate vegetation map for the California desert as it pertains to renewable energy sources and conservation opportunities, helping planners identify high quality habitat and rare communities. The vegetation classification follows Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) and National Vegetation Classification Standards (NVCS). The classification is based on previous survey and classification work. The map was produced applying heads‐up digitizing techniques using a base of 2014 true‐color and color infrared one‐meter National Agricultural Imagery Program (NAIP) imagery in conjunction with ancillary data and imagery sources. Map polygons are assessed for Vegetation Type, Percent Cover, Exotics, Development Disturbance, and other attributes. The minimum mapping unit (MMU) is 10 acres; exceptions are made for wetlands and certain wash types (which were mapped to a 1 or 5 acre MMU, depending on type) and areas characterized as Land Use polygons (which were mapped to a 2.5 acre MMU). Field reconnaissance and accuracy assessment enhanced map quality. A total of 88 vegetation classes were mapped. The overall accuracy assessment rating for the final vegetation map was 91.90 percent. In addition, mapping of 95,981 acres within a portion of Rice and Vidal Valleys in the Colorado Desert portion of the Sonoran Desert was completed by AIS in 2013‐2014. The maps were primarily produced to support the Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan (DRECP) by helping planners more accurately identify high quality habitat and rare communities as they consider renewable energy sources and conservation opportunities. Previous vegetation maps of the area were either large scale and generalized or they were detailed but covered a limited extent. Between 2014 and 2016, as an extension to supplement those mapping efforts, AIS was tasked to create a fine‐scale vegetation map of 2,195,415 acres of desert in Inyo, San Bernardino, Riverside, and Imperial Counties in southern California. Areas mapped include the eastern and central portions of the Mojave Desert as well as the Lower Colorado Valley, also referred to as the Colorado Desert, and the Arizona Upland subdivisions of the Sonoran Desert. The vegetation classification, which follows Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) and National Vegetation Classification Standards (NVCS), is based on previous surveys and classifications. Non‐vegetative classes such as water bodies and land use are included. Field reconnaissance was conducted by staff from AIS, accompanied on a few trips by VegCAMP staff. AIS photointerpreters then created a map representing Vegetation Types (vegetation Alliances) and Percent

The 1996 National List is a draft revision of the National List of Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1988 National Summary (Reed 1988) (1988 National List). The 1996 National List is provided to encourage additional public review and comments on the draft regional wetland indicator assignments. The 1996 National List reflects a significant amount of new information that has become available since 1988 on the wetland affinity of vascular plants. This new information has resulted from the extensive use of the 1988 National List in the field by individuals involved in wetland and other resource inventories, wetland identification and delineation, and wetland research. Interim Regional Interagency Review Panel (Regional Panel) changes in indicator status as well as additions and deletions to the 1988 National List were documented in Regional supplements. The National List was originally developed as an appendix to the Classification of Wetlands and Deepwater Habitats of the United States (Cowardin et al.1979) to aid in the consistent application of this classification system for wetlands in the field.. The 1996 National List also was developed to aid in determining the presence of hydrophytic vegetation in the Clean Water Act Section 404 wetland regulatory program and in the implementation of the swampbuster provisions of the Food Security Act. While not required by law or regulation, the Fish and Wildlife Service is making the 1996 National List available for review and comment.

Sanderson1 ABSTRACT.—Previous accounts of polyploidy in the North American salt desert shrub Atriplex confertifolia (shad- scale) have dealt with the distribution of polyploidy and the morphological and secondary chemical differences between races. The present study amplifies these studies and reveals additional ploidy-flavonoid races, with ploidy levels known to extend from 2x to 12x, and all except 2x and 12x represented by races with and without 6-methoxylation of flavonol compounds. Results of this study show that diploids across their range have about 113% as much DNA per genome as do polyploids and that parallel variation in monoploid genome size between diploids and accompanying polyploids can be shown in different parts of the species’ range.

Although crystal distribution is likely a systematic feature of some species of Buddleja, other wood features relate closely to ecology. Features correlated with xeromorphy in Buddleja include strongly marked growth rings (terminating with vascular tracheids), narrower mean vessel diameter, shorter vessel elements, greater vessel density, and helical thickenings in vessels. Old World species of Buddleja cannot be differentiated from New World species on the basis of wood features. Emorya wood is like that of xeromorphic species of Buddleja. Lateral wall vessel pits of Nuxia are small (2.5 ILm) compared to those of Buddleja (mostly 5-7 ILm) . Peltanthera wood features can also be found in Buddleja or Nuxia; Dickison's transfer of Sanango from Buddlejaceae to Ges­ neriaceae is justified. All wood features of Buddlejaceae can be found in families of subclass Asteridae such as Acanthaceae, Asteraceae, Lamiaceae, Myoporaceae, Scrophulariaceae, and Verbenaceae.

Date: April 3, 2019 Re: Athos Supplemental Spring 2019 Botanical Surveys This memo report presents the methods and results for supplemental botanical surveys conducted for the Athos Solar Energy Project in March 2019 and supplements the Biological Resources Technical Report (BRTR; Ironwood 2019) which reported on field surveys conducted in 2018. BACKGROUND Botanical surveys were previously conducted in the spring and fall of 2018 for the entirety of the project site for the Athos Solar Energy Project (Athos). However, due to insufficient rain, many plant species did not germinate for proper identification during 2018 spring surveys. Fall surveys in 2018 were conducted only on a reconnaissance-level due to low levels of rain. Regional winter rainfall from the two nearest weather stations showed rainfall averaging at 0.1 inches during botanical surveys conducted in 2018 (Ironwood, 2019). In addition, gen-tie alignments have changed slightly and alternatives, access roads and spur roads have been added. PURPOSE The purpose of this survey was to survey all new additions and re-survey areas of interest including public lands (limited to portions of the gen-tie segments), parcels supporting native vegetation and habitat, and windblown sandy areas where sensitive plant species may occur. The private land parcels in current or former agricultural use were not surveyed (parcel groups A, B, C, E, and part of G). METHODS Survey Areas: The area surveyed for biological resources included the entirety of gen-tie routes (including alternates), spur roads, access roads on public land, parcels supporting native vegetation (parcel groups D and F), and areas covered by windblown sand where sensitive species may occur (portion of parcel group G).

DISTRIBUTION: Springs and associated springbrooks, outlow stream systems and terminal marshes within Ash Meadows Natonal Wildlife Refuge, Nye Co., NV. GENERAL HABITAT AND LIFE HISTORY: This species is isolated to warm springs and outlows in Ash Meadows NWR including Point of Rocks, Crystal Springs, and the Carson Slough drainage. Pupfshes feed generally on substrate; feeding territories are ofen defended by pupfshes. Diet consists of mainly algae and detritus however, aquatc insects, crustaceans, snails and eggs are also consumed. Spawning actvity is typically from February to September and in some cases year round. Males defend territories vigorously during breeding season (Soltz and Naiman 1978). In warm springs, fsh may reach sexual maturity in 4-6 weeks. Reproducton variable: in springs, pupfsh breed throughout the year, may have 8-10 generatons/year; in streams, breeds in spring and summer, 2-3 generatons/year (Moyle 1976). In springs, males establish territories over sites suitable for ovipositon. Short generaton tme allows small populatons to be viable. Young adults typically comprise most of the biomass of a populaton. Compared to other C. nevadensis subspecies, this pupfsh has a short deep body and long head with typically low fn ray and scale counts (Soltz and Naiman 1978). CONSERVATION CHALLENGES: Being previously threatened by agricultural use of the area (loss and degradaton of habitat resultng from water diversion and pumping) and by impending residental development, the TNC purchased property, which later became the Ash Meadows NWR.

Laudenslayer, Jr. i INTRODUCTION i \ 1 The term, "California desert", as used herein, refers to a politically defined region, most of i which is included in the California Desert Conservation Area (CDCA) designated by the Federal Land ; and Management Act of 1976 (FLPMA). Of the 25 million acres in the CDCA, about one-half are i public lands, most of which are managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) according to the "980 P California Desert Conservation Area Plan mandated by FLPMA. The California desert encompasses those portions of the Great Basin Desert (east of the White and lnyo Mountains and A south of the California-Nevada border), the Mojave Desert, and the Colorado Desert which occur " within California; it does not include areas of riparian, aquatic, urban, and agricultural habitats . adjacent to the Colorado River. (Also see chapters on Geology by Norris and Bioclimatology by E3irdsI4 are the most conspicuous vertebrates found in the California deserts. Records exist for at least 425 species (Garrett and Dunn 1981) from 18 orders and 55 families. These counts far exceed those for mammals, reptiles, amphibians and fish, and they are similar to totals for the entire state -- 542 species from 20 orders and 65 families (Laudenslayer and Grenfell 1983). These figures may seem surprisingly similar considering the harsh, arid climates often believed characteristic of I desert environments. However, habiiats found in the California desert range from open water and h marshes at the Salton Sea to pinyon-juniper woodland and limber pinelbristlecone pine forests on a few mountain ranges.
