SITUATION Magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck at 02:02hrs local time on 20 November 2004. At least eight people were killed. Hundreds of houses damaged; major highways were cracked in the earthquake. Hardest- hit areas are and in the Pacific Coast and the Central Valley regions: heavy damages to infrastructure and water systems reported. In Quepos, assessments confirm 36 damaged homes and 5 homes totally destroyed. The local hospital and some school buildings were also affected. In Parrita, 15 houses and a number of public buildings have suffered considerable damage; local police station reportedly collapsed.
