  • A Case Study of Qanat in the Central Iran
An Appraisal of Qualifying Role of Hydraulic Heritage Systems; A Case Study of Qanat in the Central Iran Mehdi F. Harandi1 Marc J. de Vries2 Abstract Hydraulic heritage systems, both underground and exposed, have been known to be sustainable for millennia. Persian and also Roman aqueducts are examples of such hydrosystems. Their values are often overlooked but they have undeniable advantages: they have functional interconnectedness with their surrounding society and ecology, which sometimes leads to revitalization plans. By using the notion „qualifying role‟, this paper will raise questions concerning the disregarded functions and early and historical positions of hydraulic heritage systems. This article illustrates the qualifying role of Qanats in urban drainage by describing the skill in their planning and construction. This is shown by a problematic case study in Iran, where the construction of a drainage system modelled on bygone Qanat‟s techniques resulted in a dramatic drawdown in the water level of the area soon after construction. Keywords: aqueduct, hydraulic heritage system, underground water supply network, technological development, Qanat technology. ______________________________________________________________________________ 1 Department of Hydraulic Engineering, Delft University of Technology, Delft, The Netherlands. e-mail: [email protected] 2 Department of Philosophy, Delft University of Technology, Delft, The Netherlands 1. Introduction Hydraulic heritage systems, such as Persian underground „water supply networks‟, have been known to be sustainable (English, 1998) for millennia. For many years these water supply systems have been facing diverse and adverse contradictions mostly of a „utilitarian nature‟ (Martínez-Santos and Martínez-Alfaro, 2014) of engineering heritage linked to modernism. They have by far been overtaken by engineering infrastructure and were deemed as a hindrance for modern technological development.

Current World Environment Vol. 7(1), 87-91 (2012) Detecting the Level of Contaminations Caused by Heavy Metals in the Zayandeh Roud River and Clean up by Leaves of Beech Tree MOHAMMAD KARIMI Department of Hydrology, International University of Isfahan, Isfahan (Iran). (Received: April 25, 2012; Accepted: May 28, 2012) ABSTRACT Zayandeh Roud is one of the most important rivers flowing in the central part of Iran. It originates from the Kouhrang Mountains. This river passes through Chahar Mahal & Bakhtiari and Esfahan Provinces and finally flows into the Gavakhouni pond. The water of this river is used for agriculture, industry and potable water. Determination of contamination level of heavy metals throughout the river is important and has a major role in controlling the ecological conditions of its environment. Clean up of the contaminations caused by heavy metals based on the natural methods including use of plants such as beech leaves will result in a healthy surrounding life while leaving no negative effects. The reason for selecting the leaves of beech tree is the abundance of this plant in different parts of Iran as well as its easy preparaation for use. In the spring of 2011, contamination level of the river to Cu, Zn, and Pb metals was measured in 6 stations and three stages and the effect of using the leaves of beech tree on the absorption of heavy metals was investigated. Key words: Zayandeh Roud, Water Pollution, Heavy Metals, Heavy Metals Clean-up. INTRODUCTION Ventura, Diaz, & Garcia-Flores, 2008). The toxicity caused by heavy metals is an issue for which there Contamination of heavy metals causes a is much concern since it is very important for serious problem for health and generally for man’s people’s health as well as for ecology.

  • The 1999-2001 Water Crisis in the Zayandeh Rud Basin
The 1999-2001 drought in the Zayandeh Rud basin, Iran, and its impact on water allocation and agriculture1 François Molle2 and Alireza Mamanpoush3 1 Introduction Most densely populated basin in the world, especially those which include a large city, have their water resources regulated by large storage dams. The management of the dams may differ widely depending on several factors, such as the (ir)regularity/predictability of the inflow, the ratio of the storage capacity to the annual dam inflow, the priority of use (hydropower generation, or agriculture, or supply to cities; flood control), and the level of security adopted for the supply of the different uses. Despite an extensive literature on the mathematic modelling of multipurpose dams, few are managed according to the strict set of rules one may derive from such exercises. One reason is that the perception and acceptance of risk varies with time; a second reason is that political criteria often override technical criteria, especially in times of crisis. When droughts occur, it is often claimed that dam managers have released too much water and jeopardized the security of the system, leaving it more exposed to a possible extreme event. This may or may not be the case and careful examination of hydrological data is required. The impact on agriculture of a given reduction in water supply is very hard to predict. Prediction is specially arduous in systems where farmers have developed conjunctive use of surface and groundwater. Farmers’ coping strategies include changing crops, shifting calendars, improving plot level application of water, designing arrangements such as rotations at the tertiary and field level in order to save water, but also resorting to groundwater to compensate for the reduction of surface water (Molle 2003).

Abstract Water supplies have been meeting strict experiments all over the world and the tendencies of reducing precipitations and rising temperatures in the arid and semi-arid of the Middle-East region (such as Iran) aggravate this condition during the last few decades. The significant climate changeability of the area creates drought occurrences emerge regular happening in the region which make significant losses in both the environment and economy. Water supply planning is a part of complicated, interdisciplinary progressions including several stakeholders with various attractions, professional knowledge, and preferences. Proper planning needs productive Integrated Water Resource Management models that can respond these complicated troubles. The aim of this study was to develop a structure for applicable and efficient risk control of water supplies through drought. This management structure combines hydrological, socio- economic and water organization models. The methodology has three factors: 1) the statistical possessions of drought characterisation and drought trend in terms of space-time were examined and thresholds of drought warning are evaluated to assist as drivers for control programmes.
