The Turkish Online Journal of Design, Art and Communication - TOJDAC ISSN: 2146-5193, September 2018 Special Edition, p.809-817 THE IJTIMA’I METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH: A REVIEW ON ECONOMIC VERSES IN TAFSIR AL-AZHAR BY HAMKA (1908-1981) A. H. Usman1*, M. Ibrahim2, M. N. A. Kadir2 1Faculty of Islamic Civilisation Studies, Kolej Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Selangor (KUIS), 43000, Malaysia 2Faculty of Islamic Studies, National University of Malaysia (UKM), Malaysia *[email protected] ABSTRACT Tafsir al-Azhar is one of the popular masterpieces of Indonesian exegete, Hamka. This paper discusses one of Hamka’s great exegetical works. The focus is on his discussion of economic affairs in particular, capitalism, usury and corruption, in the selected text in particular those related to. A qualitative method is adopted in this paper in which selected documents are analysed. This paper found that Hamka has unique approaches in this respect that are closely related to the socio-cultural aspects of Indonesia. Again, like other exegetes, Hamka applies al-ijtima’i in his work. This method seeks to understand the Qur’an by studying its expressions carefully and elaborating their meanings beautifully and interesting style of language in the context of existing cultural system. Keywords: Economic, Hamka, Society, Capitalism, Interest, Corruption INTRODUCTION Tafsir (exegesis) of the Qur’an is very important for Muslims. All matters concerning the Islamic way of life are connected to it as proper understanding of Islam guided by Allah is vital to live a Muslim way of life. Without tafsir, it would not be possible to have a right understanding of Qur’an (Von Denver, 1983). -

1 Surau Jembatan Besi

SUMATRA THAWALIB Latar Belakang Sejarah Kelahirannya Oleh: Bahrum Subagiya Universitas Ibn Khaldun Bogor [email protected]

CONTEMPORARY ISLAMIC THOUGHT IN INDONESIAINDONESIANNNN AND MALAY WORLD Islam Liberal, Islam Hadhari, and Islam Progresif 111 Kamaruzzaman Bustamam-Ahmad IAIN Ar-Raniry, Banda Aceh - Indonesia Abstract : Islam in Indonesian and Malay world is very much heterogenuous. Taking Islam Liberal , Islam Hadhari , and Islam Progresif as the subject of analysis, this article deals with the concepts Islam Liberal , Islam Hadhari , and Islam Progresif as products of the trends in Islamic thinking, the impact of these three interpretations of Islam in Malaysia and Indonesia, the similarities and dissimilarities between the three, and their future prospects in the region. It argues that the prominence of the debates surrounding the three currents of Islamic thought is the result of struggles for power and authority in Islamic discourse in the region. It further argues that the Indonesian-based Islam Liberal differs from the Malaysian-based Islam Hadhari in that it does not originate from government sources. Islam Progresif is more of an umbrella term referring to various strands of thought developed by Muslims opposed to the status quo. Although Islam Hadhari is a newly-coined term, it contains many elements in common with other schools of Islamic thought including Islam Liberal and neo-modernist Islam. Keywords : Islam Liberal , Islam Hadhari , Islam Progresif Islamic thought, Indonesian-Malay World. Introduction The diversity of currents in Islamic thought has enriched the development of Islam in Southeast Asia. Islam Liberal (“Liberal Islam”), Islam Hadhari (“Civilizational Islam”), and Islam Progresif (“Progressive 1 I wish to thank Patrick Jory and Ronald Lukens-Bull for their valuable comments during the preparation of this article.
