Mississippi Burning – Transcription Lisa – Ella

Lisa: Hey! Ella: Hi! How are you? Lisa: Good! So, what’s up? Ella: I’m not doing too well at the moment. I’ve just started a new class at university and it’s really hard! Lisa: No! What’s it about? Ella: American civil rights, actually, so you might be able to give me a hand! Lisa: Yeah, that’s actually a really interesting time in American history.

Première partie Ella: Really? Lisa: Yeah, there’s a great film about it called Burning.

Ella: I’ve never heard of it. What period is it set in? Lisa: It takes place right at the height of the civil rights movement in 1964. Ella: Ok, cool! Who was it directed by? Lisa: , I don’t know if you’ve heard of him? He directed Evita and Angela’s Ashes. Ella: Well, is there anybody famous in it? Lisa: Yeah, it starred and . Ella: And when was it released?

Deuxième partie Lisa: Long ago now! It came out in 1988. Ella: Ok, yeah, quite long ago. And what kind of film is it like? A love story or a romance? Lisa: No, not at all, it’s a crime drama. Ella: Ok, cool! Oh, I completely forgot. Would you like a drink? Lisa: Oh, yeah, I’ll have a grenadine. Ella: Ok, cool!

Ella: So, how does the film start? Lisa: Well, it’s about these two FBI agents, Gene Hackman and Willem Dafoe, and they’re sent down to Mississippi to investigate the disappearance of three civil rights activists. And the problem is that the two agents have really different styles... Ella: Yeah! Lisa: ...of getting information so Gene Hackman is older and he used to be a sheriff in a small town in Mississippi and he kind of has sneaky ways to figure out information. He doesn’t always follow the rules whereas Willem Dafoe, he’s got a lot more power in the FBI because he always follows the rules, he’s a lot younger, he’s gotten further along... Troisième partie Troisième Ella: Oh, that’s cool! So, which method do they end up using? Lisa: Well, first they start off with Willem Dafoe who always follows the rules and he starts asking a lot of questions and people in town get angry and they start lashing out against the black community so it doesn’t work and then there’s a turning point which is very violent and they decide to do Gene Hackman’s way and he threatens people in the and eventually gets them to admit all the crimes that they’ve committed. Ella: So, it ends happily. Lisa: Yes and no, because they catch the people who committed the crimes and they go to jail but while they did that, still a lot of people died while that happened and there’s still a lot of violence going on in the South so...

1 Ella: So is it based on a true story? Lisa: The actual story isn’t completely true but it’s based on lots of true events that happened in the South during that time period. Ella: Oh, ok! So it’s a good example of the time. Lisa: Yes, I would absolutely recommend this movie if you’re gonna take this course. And it’s a good movie, too. It’s very entertaining and it’s interesting and you cry and then you’re happy at the end... yeah! Ella: Wow, you’ve really sold it to me, I’ll definitely have a look! Lisa: Good, I hope you’ll like it! Quatrième partie
