29th ANNUAL MAYBERRY DAYS® Celebrating the 58th Anniversary of TAGS Staying in Tune with Mayberry! WELCOME MAYBERRY DAYS® SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR SPONSOR By Jim Clark MOUNT AIRY CHRYSLER DODGE JEEP RAM FIAT The theme for this year’s Mayberry Days is “Whistle if you love Mayberry!” I SPECIAL GUESTS 508 N. Andy Griffith Parkway think we’re going to be hearing a lot of whistling around town over the course of the festival. And we all know exactly which tune we’re talking about. By heart. We welcome our Mayberry stars Rodney Dillard, Of course, on any given day, it’s not an unusual thing to hear “The Laura Hagen, Clint Howard, Stark Howell, Margaret Andy Griffith Theme” playing just about Kerry, Karen Knotts, Bettina Linke, Betty Lynn, anywhere in downtown Mount Airy. And the same could be said around LeRoy McNees, Maggie Peterson-Mancuso, Dennis Many of the trucks and cars in the Mayberry Days® Parade are the homes of many fans of the show— Rush, Ronnie Schell, and Keith Thibodeaux. provided by our sponsor. Check out their vehicles at the golf especially those who attend Mayberry tournament, the Blackmon Amphitheatre, and at the Andy Griffith Days. Playhouse and Museum. Buy your cars and trucks in Mayberry! You’d be hard-pressed to convince me that there has ever been a better theme song either for a TV show or for just We continue to be grateful to TAGSRWC, those who going about our everyday lives. We’re forever indebted to the late composer (and advertise, and our donors for supporting Mayberry Days® whistler) Earle Hagen. We’re likewise fortunate that Laura Hagen is once again able to join us for Mayberry Days. It makes for a satisfied mind to celebrate these and for all their support of the Surry Arts Council year- Mayberry ties that bind us. round. Please support them while you are in town! With that remembering also comes reflection about those no longer with us. Since the 2017 festival, we’ve lost several members of the Mayberry cast and crew MAYBERRY DAYS® VENDORS who were involved in multiple episodes of the series—including Rance Howard All American Gutter Protection (whose son Clint will be sharing memories of his father at this year’s festival), Jim American Satellite Concepts Nabors (who will be remembered in a special tribute by Ronnie Schell), and Dillards Bam Snack Shop mandolin maestro Dean Webb and banjo player Billy Ray Lathum (who performed in Mayberry as one of The Country Boys and who was also a post-Mayberry Cabela’s (Fort Mill, SC) member of The Dillards). Dean and Billy Ray will be paid tribute during Mayberry Crispin’ Kettle Corn Days performances by former bandmates Rodney Dillard and LeRoy McNees. Fork’et Me Not Attendees of Mayberry Days will also feel the loss of special Mayberry fans that Fun Time Inflatables many of us came to know at Mayberry Days and through other gatherings of fans. Among those friends for whom there will be a vacant chair this year are Wanda Mary’s Face Painting Fields, a year-round visitor to Mount Airy from nearby Reidsville, and Canadian Mayberry Days Bake Sale (Friday only) crooner Ron Quinsey. Ron and wife Terry hadn’t been able to travel to Mayberry Mayberry Shaved Ice Days from Ontario since the festival’s early years, but they showed their continuing McNeill’s Pottery (Seagrove) love and support of Mayberry Days by endowing the annual “You’re the Cat’s!” Award. Mount Airy Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Fiat This summer Mount Airy’s own Bertie McCoy also passed away. Bertie was NC Cooperative Extension, Surry County 4-H for years one of the first people many of us would encounter on our visits to Mount US Handmade Crafts Airy. We’d work our way down Main Street—popping in to say hey to Bertie at the Vicky Mon’s Fun Ol’ Cakes Mount Airy Visitors Center before heading on down to see Russell Hiatt at Floyd’s City Barber Shop and then visiting with Charles Dowell and crew grilling pork chop Vintage Treasures sandwiches next door at the Snappy Lunch. (If we were hungry, we might reverse the order and make a Snappy pork chop our first stop.) OFFICIAL 2018 MAYBERRY DAYS® T- SHIRTS One of the regulars to make that circuit (or at least his own rendition of it) was T-shirts will be on sale in the Andy Griffith Museum until Friday, Robert Shelby of West Frankfort, Ill. We lost Robert in August. He and wife Jill September 28th. At that time they will also be on sale at the attended Mayberry Days (and just about every other Mayberry gathering east of Information Station. Cash or check is preferred at the Information the Mississippi) since the 1990s. For most of those years, for events big and small, Station. the couple brought their Mayberry squad replica for all to enjoy. Thinking about Robert brings me back to the theme of “Whistle if you love Mayberry.” Mayberry was a theme of the sermon at the funeral service for Robert. MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2018 But even more than that, Earle Hagen’s big-band version of “The Andy Griffith Show 8:30 am-5:00 pm MAYBERRY DAYS® INFORMATION and Theme” was played as the closing music for the service. I’ve never been so happy TICKETS, Lower Level Andy Griffith Playhouse, 218 Rockford to hear that tune in all my life. On that most solemn of occasions, hearing that oh-so familiar music brought both a smile to my face and tears to my eyes. “Whistle if you Street, 336-786-7998 love Mayberry” indeed. There can be no doubt that Robert Shelby loved Mayberry 8:30 am-5:00 pm VISITORS CENTER, 200 North Main Street, with all his heart right till the end of his life. 336-786-6116 I’ll likely never hear our beloved whistled tune in quite the same way again. 9:00 am-4:30 pm MAYBERRY POSTMARK, Post Office, 111 South That theme song, that ultimate uplifting anthem, was already a poignant trigger for Main Street pondering countless wonderful memories and friendships. But hearing the song 9:00 am-5:00 pm ANDY GRIFFITH MUSEUM, $8 includes tax played at Robert’s service really resonated with me. Though the reason we were gathered was a sad one, the choice to play that song was almost as if telling all who (includes admission to Betty Lynn Exhibit, Siamese Twins Exhibit, were listening: Keep on watching those Mayberry reruns and keep on walking to the Mayberry Mural, and Old-Time Music Heritage Hall at the Historic Fishin’ Hole and riding in Mayberry squad car replicas. Keep on enjoying your own Earle Theatre) life’s version of Mayberry, whatever that may be for you. 10:00 am ANDY GRIFFITH PLAYHOUSE BACKSTAGE TOUR with And, I might add, keep on celebrating every precious moment of these Abigail Linville, Gather under Andy Griffith Playhouse portico, Free Mayberry Days, and always be sure to whistle if you love Mayberry! 336.786.7998 | www.surryarts.org | [email protected] www.surryarts.org Page 23.
