Since the 2017 festival, we’ve lost several members of the Mayberry cast and crew MAYBERRY DAYS® VENDORS who were involved in multiple episodes of the series—including Rance Howard All American Gutter Protection (whose son Clint will be sharing memories of his father at this year’s festival), Jim American Satellite Concepts Nabors (who will be remembered in a special tribute by Ronnie Schell), and Dillards Bam Snack Shop mandolin maestro Dean Webb and banjo player Billy Ray Lathum (who performed in Mayberry as one of The Country Boys and who was also a post-Mayberry Cabela’s (Fort Mill, SC) member of The Dillards). Dean and Billy Ray will be paid tribute during Mayberry Crispin’ Kettle Corn Days performances by former bandmates Rodney Dillard and LeRoy McNees. Fork’et Me Not Attendees of Mayberry Days will also feel the loss of special Mayberry fans that Fun Time Inflatables many of us came to know at Mayberry Days and through other gatherings of fans. Among those friends for whom there will be a vacant chair this year are Wanda Mary’s Face Painting Fields, a year-round visitor to Mount Airy from nearby Reidsville, and Canadian Mayberry Days Bake Sale (Friday only) crooner Ron Quinsey. Ron and wife Terry hadn’t been able to travel to Mayberry Mayberry Shaved Ice Days from Ontario since the festival’s early years, but they showed their continuing McNeill’s Pottery (Seagrove) love and support of Mayberry Days by endowing the annual “You’re the Cat’s!” Award.     A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SAN DIEGO BLUEGRASS SOCIETY By Dwight Worden May 13, 2014 THE EARLY YEARS The late 1960s and early 70s were a time of change in America. Students were active, an unpopular war was underway, and many young Americans were breaking with the traditions of their parents. It was the season of long hair and love. The new generation was experimenting with, among other things, music. Amidst the excitement and turmoil of the times many, both young and old, were searching for authenticity and solid values in music and lifestyles. The folk boom of the 1950's and early 60's had awakened many to the raw authenticity of acoustic, folk, and bluegrass music. It was during this time period that groups like the Scottsville Squirrel Barkers were making a bluegrass mark in San Diego. Two local members of that band went on to national rock and roll stardom, Chris Hillman (mandolin) who became a founding member of the Byrds (bass), and Bernie Leadon (guitar)who joined the Eagles (guitar). Kenny Wertz of the “Barkers” (banjo) went on to bluegrass fame in Country Gazette (guitar) and with the Flying Burrito Brothers. There were jam sessions at the Blue Guitar music store, then located in Old Town (now on Mission Gorge Road). Venues like the Heritage in Mission Beach and the Candy Company brought acts like Vern and Ray, the Dillards, and others to town. “Cactus Jim” Soldi of Valley Music in El Cajon was the first to bring Bill Monroe to town at the Bostonia Ballroom in El Cajon.

Rodney Dillard as founding member of the legendary group, ‘THE DILLARDS’ (aka the Darlings) is seen nearly everyday somewhere in the world thanks to the still enormous popularity of The ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW reruns. Rodney continued to modernize and innovate the sound of Bluegrass as he wrote and collaborated to write such now classic songs as “There Is a Time”, “The Darlin Boys”, “Ebo Walker”, and “Dooley”. By the late 1960′s Rodney had transformed the Dillards into the driving force creating new sounds in the West Coast music environment. Later, called “The Father of Country Rock”, Rodney was among the first Bluegrass musicians to “electrify” traditional Bluegrass instruments while also adding drums, steel guitar, and orchestra. The band’s unique flare for song writing and arrangement affected a broad range of important future musicians in the Bluegrass and Pop music world alike.
