2014 Joe Val Bluegrass Festival Preview The 29th Joe Val Bluegrass Festival is quickly approaching, February 14 -16 at the Sheraton Framingham Hotel, in Framingham, MA. The event, produced by the Boston Bluegrass Union, is one of the premier roots music festivals in the Northeast. A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SAN DIEGO BLUEGRASS SOCIETY By Dwight Worden May 13, 2014 THE EARLY YEARS The late 1960s and early 70s were a time of change in America. Students were active, an unpopular war was underway, and many young Americans were breaking with the traditions of their parents. It was the season of long hair and love. The new generation was experimenting with, among other things, music. Amidst the excitement and turmoil of the times many, both young and old, were searching for authenticity and solid values in music and lifestyles. The folk boom of the 1950's and early 60's had awakened many to the raw authenticity of acoustic, folk, and bluegrass music. It was during this time period that groups like the Scottsville Squirrel Barkers were making a bluegrass mark in San Diego. Two local members of that band went on to national rock and roll stardom, Chris Hillman (mandolin) who became a founding member of the Byrds (bass), and Bernie Leadon (guitar)who joined the Eagles (guitar). Kenny Wertz of the “Barkers” (banjo) went on to bluegrass fame in Country Gazette (guitar) and with the Flying Burrito Brothers. There were jam sessions at the Blue Guitar music store, then located in Old Town (now on Mission Gorge Road). Venues like the Heritage in Mission Beach and the Candy Company brought acts like Vern and Ray, the Dillards, and others to town. “Cactus Jim” Soldi of Valley Music in El Cajon was the first to bring Bill Monroe to town at the Bostonia Ballroom in El Cajon.

Rodney continued to modernize and innovate the sound of Bluegrass as he wrote and collaborated to write such now classic songs as “There Is a Time”, “The Darlin Boys”, “Ebo Walker”, and “Dooley”. By the late 1960′s Rodney had transformed the Dillards into the driving force creating new sounds in the West Coast music environment. Later, called “The Father of Country Rock”, Rodney was among the first Bluegrass musicians to “electrify” traditional Bluegrass instruments while also adding drums, steel guitar, and orchestra. The band’s unique flare for song writing and arrangement affected a broad range of important future musicians in the Bluegrass and Pop music world alike.

J2B2 (JOHN JORGENSON BLUEGRASS BAND) J2B2 is an all-star bluegrass supergroup featuring four legendary, award-winning musicians – John Jorgenson on acoustic guitar, mandolin and vocals; Herb Pedersen on banjo, acoustic guitar and vocals; Mark Fain on bass; and Patrick Sauber on acoustic guitar and vocals – delivering bluegrass like no one has ever heard it before. The band’s undeniable live shows have received stellar reviews and have the bluegrass world buzzing. The four combine forces to form a spot-on union of impeccable musicianship, incomparable songwriting, incredible harmony vocals (a fresh twist combining bluegrass with elements of West Coast folk rock) and seasoned showmanship. This is the “high lonesome sound” of American roots music at its finest. Jorgenson and Pedersen are founders (with Chris Hillman) of the formative country rock group Desert Rose Band. After working as a freelance musician in Southern California, Jorgenson met Hillman and soon formed the Desert Rose Band. In 1990, Jorgenson went on to found the Hellecasters and toured with Elton John's band for six years. Artists ranging from Barbra Streisand to Bonnie Raitt to Earl Scruggs have sought out Jorgenson's guitar work. Jorgenson portrayed Django Reinhardt in the Hollywood feature film Head in the Clouds. In 2008, Jorgenson won a Grammy for Best Country Instrumental with Brad Paisley and was nominated for Best Bluegrass Album with Earl Scruggs. Herb Pedersen was a member of legendary bluegrass band The Dillards as well as bluegrass super-group Old and In the Way. A sought-after singer and musician, he has worked with such music legends as Chris Hillman, Earl Scruggs, Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris, Tony Rice, Dan Fogelberg, Stephen Stills, Linda Ronstadt, Kris Kristofferson, John Prine, Jackson Browne and John Denver.

Boye Appalachian State University Abstract: Few songwriters have had more of their songs covered by other artists than Bob Dylan. Although most commonly associated with the folk and folk/rock traditions today, his early listening included wide exposure to country music, including bluegrass, and it is not entirely surprising that some of his early works were covered in a bluegrass style by such artists as the Dillards, Country Gentlemen, and Flatt and Scruggs in the 1960s. Some of these early covers appear to have circulated in back channels of the recording industry and been pushed towards the performers regardless of the suitability for the style or the group in question. Some are quite successful; others border on musical parody.
