Interspecific competition is a major structuring force in ant assemblages. The assemblages are organized hierarchically, with territorial species as top competitors. In boreal areas and in the temperate deciduous forest biome common territorials are species of the subgenus Formica s. str. They are well known for their negative impact on lower-ranked ant species. Less is known, though the structuring role of Lasius fuliginosus, another territorial ant species. Some earlier studies have shown or suggested that it may restrictively affect subordinate species (including direct predation toward them) even stronger than wood ants do. In the present study we compared species compositions and nest densities of subordinate ant species within and outside territories of L. fuliginosus. The results obtained confirmed that this species visibly impoverishes both qualitatively (reduced species richness, altered dominance structures) and quantitatively (decreased nest densities) ant assemblages within its territories. -

General description (worker) Identification Size: monomorphic workers about 2.3–3 mm long. Colour: head, thorax, petiole, and gaster are dark brown to blackish; the body often has faint bluish iridescence. Surface sculpture: head and body mostly with inconspicuous sculpture; appearing smooth and shining. INVASIVE ANT RISK ASSESSMENT Paratrechina longicornis Whole body has longish setae. Appears quite hairy. Hairs are light in colour grey to whitish. General description: antennae and legs extraordinarily long. Antenna slender, 12-segmented, without a club; scape at least 1.5 times as long as head including closed mandibles. Eyes large, maximum diameter 0.3 times head length; elliptical, strongly convex; placed close to the posterior border of the head. Head elongate; mandibles narrow, each with 5 teeth. Clypeus without longitudinal carinae. Alitrunk slender, dorsum almost straight from anterior portion of pronotum to propodeal dorsum. Metanotal groove slightly incised. Propodeum without spines, posterodorsal border rounded; propodeal spiracles distinct. One node (petiole) present, wedge-shaped, with a broad base, and inclined forward. Dorsal surface of head, alitrunk and gaster with long, coarse, suberect to erect greyish or whitish setae. -

Clarke Abstract: The Silver-studded Blue is often considered to be a sedentary species, not moving more than 50 m during its life. However, based on recent research and my own experience from Surrey, this is not the case. Males can easily move 200 m when relocated away from ant nests, and new sites can be colonised within a few years from source sites at least 3 km away, probably a year or so after the ants Lasius niger or Lasius alienus have colonised. Silver-studded Blue is a butterfly of early successional habitat, so it needs to be mobile in order to find suitable habitat for the next generation. If it was very sedentary, then colonies would soon die out as habitat matures and becomes unsuitable to support the ants and the butterfly. Introduction This article has been prompted by the statements that Silver-studded Blue (Plebejus argus) is sedentary, barely moving more than 20 m, with 50 m considered exceptional, and breeding populations of 100 m or more considered isolated, based on three mark-release-recapture studies (Thomas, 2014) and (Eeles, 2019). Myrmecological News 16 35-38 Vienna, January 2012 The westernmost locations of Lasius jensi SEIFERT, 1982 (Hymenoptera: Formicidae): first records in the Iberian Peninsula David CUESTA-SEGURA, Federico GARCÍA & Xavier ESPADALER Abstract Three populations of Lasius jensi SEIFERT, 1982, a temporary social parasite, from two separate regions in Spain were detected. These locations represent the westernmost populations of the species. Lasius jensi is a new record for the Iberian Peninsula, bringing the total number of native ant species to 285. Dealate queens were captured with pitfall traps from mid July to mid August. Taking into account the other species present in the three populations, the host species could be Lasius alienus (FÖRSTER, 1850), Lasius grandis FOREL, 1909 or Lasius piliferus SEIFERT, 1992. The zoogeographical significance of those populations, probably a relict from glacial refuge, is briefly discussed. To a great extent, its conservation depends on habitat restoration, maintenance and protection. In order to improve the conservation status of the species, reintroductions are increasingly applied. Therefore, researchers focus their attention on factors that facilitate these activities and contribute to their success. In addition to the well-known factors like grass height and exposition, others, related to the underground characteristics, are more difficult to evaluate. The presence of other digging species could help this evaluation. Here, we present two reintroduced ground squirrel colonies, where the vast majority of the burrows are located in the base of anthills, mainly of yellow meadow ant (Lasius flavus). This interspecies relationship offers numerous advantages for the ground squirrel and is mostly neutral for the ants. -

Layton1 Department of Entomology & Plant Pathology, Mississippi State University, Mississippi State, MS, 39762 *Corresponding Author: [email protected] Received: 18-XII-2009 Accepted: 23-XII-2009 Introduction The genus Nylanderia (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Lasiini) currently includes 134 valid species and subspecies worldwide (LaPolla et al. 2010). Fifteen described species, including nine native and six introduced species, have been collected in the continental United States (Bolton et al. 2006, Trager 1984, Meyers 2008). Formerly, Nylanderia was considered to be a subgenus of Paratrechina and was only recently elevated to the generic level by LaPolla et al. (2010); consequently, it is referred to as Paratrechina in most of the literature. In 2002, large populations of an unknown Nylanderia species were discovered in Houston, Texas. After examination by taxonomic specialists, these ants were determined to be similar to Nylanderia pubens, the hairy crazy ant (Meyers 2008), known to occur in the Neotropical Region and in Florida (Wetterer and Keularts 2008), and similar to N. fulva (Mayr), which is native to South America (Meyers 2008). However, due to taxonomic uncertainty, this species has not been definitively identified as N. pubens, N. fulva or any of its eight subspecies, or even as an undescribed species. Therefore, at this time it is being identified as N. sp. near pubens (Meyers and Gold 2008), but it could also be referred to as N. sp. -

In diesen 100 Jahren hat sich die Landschaft um Basel und damit deren Flora und Fauna stark verändert. Es liegt auf der Hand, dass sich die Gesellschaft auch für die Erhaltung der lokalen Insektenfauna einsetzt. Um die Flora und Fauna erhalten und schützen zu können, braucht es regelmässig durchgeführte Erhebungen derselben. Dies wiederum benötigt Fachleute, die die Arten aus den verschiedenen Gruppen sicher bestimmen können. Die Gesellschaft gibt seit 1951 die „Mitteilungen“ heraus, in denen sich eine Vielzahl faunistischer Meldungen finden.
