Interspecific competition is a major structuring force in ant assemblages. The assemblages are organized hierarchically, with territorial species as top competitors. In boreal areas and in the temperate deciduous forest biome common territorials are species of the subgenus Formica s. str. They are well known for their negative impact on lower-ranked ant species. Less is known, though the structuring role of Lasius fuliginosus, another territorial ant species. Some earlier studies have shown or suggested that it may restrictively affect subordinate species (including direct predation toward them) even stronger than wood ants do. In the present study we compared species compositions and nest densities of subordinate ant species within and outside territories of L. fuliginosus. The results obtained confirmed that this species visibly impoverishes both qualitatively (reduced species richness, altered dominance structures) and quantitatively (decreased nest densities) ant assemblages within its territories. -

General description (worker) Identification Size: monomorphic workers about 2.3–3 mm long. Colour: head, thorax, petiole, and gaster are dark brown to blackish; the body often has faint bluish iridescence. Surface sculpture: head and body mostly with inconspicuous sculpture; appearing smooth and shining. INVASIVE ANT RISK ASSESSMENT Paratrechina longicornis Whole body has longish setae. Appears quite hairy. Hairs are light in colour grey to whitish. General description: antennae and legs extraordinarily long. Antenna slender, 12-segmented, without a club; scape at least 1.5 times as long as head including closed mandibles. Eyes large, maximum diameter 0.3 times head length; elliptical, strongly convex; placed close to the posterior border of the head. Head elongate; mandibles narrow, each with 5 teeth. Clypeus without longitudinal carinae. Alitrunk slender, dorsum almost straight from anterior portion of pronotum to propodeal dorsum. Metanotal groove slightly incised. Propodeum without spines, posterodorsal border rounded; propodeal spiracles distinct. One node (petiole) present, wedge-shaped, with a broad base, and inclined forward. Dorsal surface of head, alitrunk and gaster with long, coarse, suberect to erect greyish or whitish setae. -

Here, we present the Belgian situation and we consider some explanations for the status of this species. De soort wordt dan meer dan 150 jaar later als ‘zeer zeldzaam’ genoteerd. In dit artikel geven we een overzicht van de Belgische situatie en overwegen enkele punten die de zeldzaamheid kunnen verklaren. Layton1 Department of Entomology & Plant Pathology, Mississippi State University, Mississippi State, MS, 39762 *Corresponding Author: [email protected] Received: 18-XII-2009 Accepted: 23-XII-2009 Introduction The genus Nylanderia (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Lasiini) currently includes 134 valid species and subspecies worldwide (LaPolla et al. 2010). Fifteen described species, including nine native and six introduced species, have been collected in the continental United States (Bolton et al. 2006, Trager 1984, Meyers 2008). Formerly, Nylanderia was considered to be a subgenus of Paratrechina and was only recently elevated to the generic level by LaPolla et al. (2010); consequently, it is referred to as Paratrechina in most of the literature. In 2002, large populations of an unknown Nylanderia species were discovered in Houston, Texas. After examination by taxonomic specialists, these ants were determined to be similar to Nylanderia pubens, the hairy crazy ant (Meyers 2008), known to occur in the Neotropical Region and in Florida (Wetterer and Keularts 2008), and similar to N. fulva (Mayr), which is native to South America (Meyers 2008). However, due to taxonomic uncertainty, this species has not been definitively identified as N. pubens, N. fulva or any of its eight subspecies, or even as an undescribed species. Therefore, at this time it is being identified as N. sp. near pubens (Meyers and Gold 2008), but it could also be referred to as N. sp. -

Abstract: Climate change brings along trend-like changes as well as changes in the temporal variations in environmental condi- tions which interact with the biological dynamics of ecological systems. Therefore, only studies covering several decades may unveil long term trends in ecological systems, such as in animal communities. To demonstrate if recent climatic changes have caused fundamental changes in the structure of a key arthropod community, I studied the long-term dynamics of ant colonies for 37 years on a sandy grassland in central Hungary. To be able to monitor colonies – the natural units of ant communities – with the possible least disturbance, I applied two grids of a total of 80 slate plates as artificial nesting sites. Prior to the presented study, a well-defined spatial ant community structure had been identified in the studied habitat, which consisted of three species groups (dune top, transitional and dune slack groups), occupying different habitat patches. During the study period 2813 nests of 11 ant species were recorded under the slates. Over the 37 years, community pattern markedly changed, dune slack species disappeared from the studied plots, while the frequency of drought-tolerant dune top species increased by a significant trend.
