The Fourth Sunday of

A Service of Nine Lessons and Carols

Welcome to this new medium of corporate worship here at St. John’s! The current necessity to practice social distancing enables us to remain attentive to the care for the vulnerable among us, which is tied to the well-being of the entire human family. It also challenges us. We are attentive as well to caring for our need for collective worship and praise of God. So, we forge forward together with new ways of worship and ask for God’s grace and love to be known as we venture with trust into the unfamiliar. Thank you for joining us today. Whether a long-standing parishioner, a new member, or someone joining us for the first time, this is new for all of us! We hope you will, through the words and music we raise to God together, sense God’s work within you and among us all. May our worship ground, strengthen, and guide us this day and always.

A SERVICE OF NINE LESSONS AND CAROLS

PRELUDE: How Brightly Shines the Morning Star Dietrich Buxtehude Christian Hinkle, trumpet : Once in royal David’s city Irby Verses 1, sung by the Youth Verses 2 through 6 sung by the Adult Choir 1 Once in royal David’s city 4 For he is our childhood’s pattern; stood a lowly cattle shed, Day by day like us he grew, where a mother laid her baby he was little, weak, and helpless, in a manger for his bed: tears and smiles like us he knew. Mary was that mother mild, and he feeleth for our sadness, Christ her little child. and he shareth in our gladness. 2 He came down to earth from heaven, 5 And our eyes at last shall see him, who is God and Lord of all, through his own redeeming love; and his shelter was a stable, for that child so dear and gentle and his cradle was a stall; is our Lord in heaven above; with the poor and mean and lowly, and he leads his children on lived on earth our Savior holy. to the place where he is gone. 3 And through all his wondrous childhood 6 Not in that poor lowly stable, he would honor and obey, with the oxen standing by, love and watch the lowly maiden we shall see him; but in heaven, in whose gentle arms he lay set at God’s right hand on high; Christian children all must be Where like stars his children crowned mild, obedient, good as he. all in white shall wait around.

BIDDING PRAYER AND THE LORD’S PRAYER Beloved in Christ, this Season it is our duty and delight to prepare ourselves to hear again the message of the angels, and to go in heart and mind to , and see this thing which is come to pass, and the Babe lying in a manger. Therefore let us hear again from Holy Scripture the tale of the loving purposes of God from the first days of our sin until the glorious redemption brought us by this holy Child; and let us make this house of prayer glad with our carols of praise. But first, because this of all things would rejoice Jesus' heart, let us pray to him for the needs of the whole world, and all his people; for peace upon the earth he came to save; for love and unity within the one Church he did build; for goodwill among all peoples. And particularly at this time let us remember the poor, the cold, the hungry, the oppressed; the sick and them that mourn; the lonely and the unloved; the aged and the little children; and all who know not the Lord Jesus, or who love him not, or who by sin have grieved his heart of love. Lastly let us remember all those who rejoice with us, but upon another shore and in a greater light, that multitude which no one can number, whose hope was in the Word made flesh, and with whom, in this Lord Jesus, we for evermore are one. These prayers and praises let us humbly offer up to the throne of heaven, in the words that Christ himself has taught us:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Almighty God bless us with his grace: Christ give us the joys of everlasting life: and unto the fellowship of the citizens above may the King of Angels bring us all. Amen.

FIRST LESSON: Genesis 3:8-15, 22-24, read by Van Lurton

God announces in the Garden of Eden that the seed of woman shall bruise the serpent’s head.

And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?” And he said, “I heard the sound of thee in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.” He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” The man said, “The woman whom gavest to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent beguiled me, and I ate.” The LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all cattle, and above all wild animals; upon your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil; and now, lest he put forth his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever” — therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from which he was taken. He drove out the man; and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.

CAROL: Adam lay ybounden, Bounden in a bond; four thousand winter thought he not too long. And all was for an apple, An apple that he took, as clerkes finden written in their book. Ne had the apple taken been, The apple taken been, ne had never our lady a been heavene queen. SECOND LESSON: Genesis 22:15-18, read by Brooke Hawken

God promises to faithful Abraham that in his seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed.

And the angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven, and said, “By myself I have sworn, says the LORD, because you have done this, and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will indeed bless you, and I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore. And your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies, and by your descendants shall all the nations of the earth bless themselves, because you have obeyed my voice.”

CAROL: Of the Father’s heart begotten Arranged by Of the Father’s heart begotten ere the world from chaos rose, he is Alpha: from that Fountain, all that is and hath been flows; he is Omega, of all things yet to come the mystic Close, evermore and evermore. By his word was all created; he commanded and ’twas done; earth and sky and boundless ocean, universe of three in one, all that sees the moon’s soft radiance, all that breathes beneath the sun, evermore and evermore. He assumed this mortal body, frail and feeble, doomed to die, that the race from dust created might not perish utterly, which the dreadful Law had sentenced in the depths of hell to lie, evermore and evermore. O how blest that wondrous birthday, when the Maid the curse retrieved, brought to birth mankind’s salvation, by the Holy Ghost conceived, and the Babe, the world’s Redeemer, in her loving arms received, evermore and evermore. This is he, whom seer and sybil sang in ages long gone by; this is he of old revealed in the page of prophecy; lo! he comes, the promised Savior; let the world his praises cry! evermore and evermore. Sing, ye heights of heaven, his praises; Angels and Archangels, sing! Wheresoe’er ye be, ye faithful, let your joyous ring, every tongue his name confessing, countless voices answering, evermore and evermore.

THIRD LESSON: 9:2, 6-7, read by Drew Merriman Christ’s birth and kingdom are foretold by Isaiah. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government will be upon his shoulder, and his name will be called “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David, and over his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and for evermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

CAROL: For unto us a child is born from Messiah

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulders, and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.

FOURTH LESSON: Isaiah 11:1-9, read by Michel Ishakian The peace that Christ will bring is foreshown. There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear; but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall slay the wicked. Righteousness shall be the of his waist, and faithfulness the girdle of his loins. The wolf shall dwell with , and the leopard shall lie down with the kid, and the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall feed; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The sucking child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder’s den. They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea. CAROL: O magnum mysterium Morten Lauridsen Linda Mabbs, soprano O magnum mysterium et admirabile sacramentum ut animalia viderent Dominum natum jacentem in praesepio. Beata Virgo, cujus viscera meruerunt portare Dominum Christum. ! O great mystery and wondrous Sacrament that animals might see the newborn Lord lying in a manger. Blessed is the Virgin whose womb was worthy to bear the Lord Jesus Christ. Alleluia! FIFTH LESSON: Luke 1:26-35, 38, read by Nancy Simon The Angel salutes the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, “Hail, O favored one, the Lord is with you!” But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there will be no end.” And Mary said to the angel, “How shall this be, since I have no husband?” And the angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

CAROL: Joys Seven Arranged by Haig Mardirosian Sung by the Youth Choir The first good joy that Mary had it was the joy of one, to see the blessed Jesus Christ, when he was first her son when he was first her son, good man, and blessed may he be, both Father, Son and Holy Ghost, through all eternity. To bring the dead alive, good man, and blessed may he be, both Father, Son and Holy Ghost, through all eternity. The next good joy that Mary had it was the joy of six, to see her own son Jesus Christ upon the , upon the crucifix, good man, and blessed may he be, both Father, Son and Holy Ghost, through all eternity. The next good joy that Mary had it was the joy of seven, to see her own son Jesus Christ to wear the Crown of Heaven. To wear the Crown of Heaven, good man, and blessed may he be, both Father, Son and Holy Ghost, through all eternity.

SIXTH LESSON: Luke 2:1, 3-7, read by Kevin Swanson

St. Luke tells of the birth of Jesus.

In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled. And all went to be enrolled, each to his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to be delivered. And she gave birth to her first-born son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

CAROL: Arranged by David Willcocks On night all Christians sing, to hear the news the angels bring, on Christmas night all Christians sing to hear the news the angels bring: news of great joy, news of great mirth, news of our merciful King’s birth. Then why should men on earth be so sad, since our Redeemer made us glad? Then why should men on earth be so sad, since our Redeemer made us glad, when from our sin he set us free, all for to gain our liberty? When sin departs before his grace, then life and health come in its place; when sin departs before his grace, then life and health come in its place; angels and men with joy may sing, all for to see the newborn King. All out of darkness we have light, which made the angels sing this night; all out of darkness we have light, which made the angels sing this night: “Glory to God and peace to men now and forever more, forever more. Amen.”

SEVENTH LESSON: Luke 2:8-16, read by the Reverend Nina L. Bacas

The Shepherds go to the Manger.

In that region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. And the angel said to them, “Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people; for to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a babe wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased!” When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” And they went with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. CAROL: Angels from the realms of glory Arranged by Reginald Jacques Angels from the realms of glory, wing your flight o’er all the earth; ye who sang creation’s story now proclaim Messiah’s birth. Gloria in excelsis Deo. Shepherds, in the field abiding, watching o’er your flocks by night, God with man is now residing; yonder shines the infant light: Gloria in excelsis Deo. Sages, leave your contemplations, brighter visions beam afar; seek the great desire of nations; ye have seen his natal star. Gloria in excelsis Deo. Saints, before the bending, watching long in hope and fear; suddenly the Lord, descending, in his temple shall appear. Gloria in excelsis Deo. Though an infant now we view him, he shall fill his Father’s throne, gather all the nations to him; every knee shall then bow down: Gloria in excelsis Deo.

EIGHTH LESSON: Matthew 2:1-11, read by the Reverend Dina E. Widlake

The Wisemen are led by the star to Jesus.

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and have come to worship him.” When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it is written by the prophet: ‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will govern my people Israel.’” Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star appeared; and he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” When they had heard the king they went their way; and lo, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came to rest over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy; and going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.

CAROL: Star Carol Please join in singing the refrain Sing this night, for a boy is born in Bethlehem, Christ our Lord in a lowly manger lies; bring your gifts, come and worship at his cradle, hurry to Bethlehem and see the son of Mary! Refrain Angels bright, come from heaven’s highest glory, bear the news with its message of good cheer: sing rejoice, for a King is come to save us, hurry to Bethlehem and see the Son of Mary! Refrain See he lies in his mother’s tender keeping; Jesus Christ in her loving arms asleep. Shepherds poor, come to worship and adore him, offer their humble gifts before the Son of Mary. Refrain Let us all pay our homage at the manger, sing his praise on this joyful Christmas Night; Christ is come, bringing promise of salvation; hurry to Bethlehem and see the Son of Mary. Refrain

NINTH LESSON: John 1:1-14, read by the Reverend Joshua D. Walters

St. John unfolds the great mystery of the Incarnation.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. T hat was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

CAROL: Gloria in excelsis Deo from the St. Nicholas Franz Joseph Haydn Gloria in excelsis Deo, et in terra pax, hominibus bonæ voluntatis. Laudamus te. Benedicimus te. Adoramus te. Glorificamus te. Gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam. Domine Deus, Rex coelestis, Deus Pater omnipotens. Domine Fili unigenite, Jesu Christe. Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris.Qui tollis peccata mundi miserere nobis. Qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram. Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, miserere nobis. Quoniam tu solus , tu solus Dominus, tu solus Altissimus, Jesu Christe. Cum Sancto Spiritu in gloria Dei Patris. Amen. Glory be to God on high, and on earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only- begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
