Warriors As the Feminised Other
Warriors as the Feminised Other The study of male heroes in Chinese action cinema from 2000 to 2009 A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Chinese Studies at the University of Canterbury by Yunxiang Chen University of Canterbury 2011 i Abstract ―Flowery boys‖ (花样少年) – when this phrase is applied to attractive young men it is now often considered as a compliment. This research sets out to study the feminisation phenomena in the representation of warriors in Chinese language films from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Mainland China made in the first decade of the new millennium (2000-2009), as these three regions are now often packaged together as a pan-unity of the Chinese cultural realm. The foci of this study are on the investigations of the warriors as the feminised Other from two aspects: their bodies as spectacles and the manifestation of feminine characteristics in the male warriors. This study aims to detect what lies underneath the beautiful masquerade of the warriors as the Other through comprehensive analyses of the representations of feminised warriors and comparison with their female counterparts. It aims to test the hypothesis that gender identities are inventory categories transformed by and with changing historical context. Simultaneously, it is a project to study how Chinese traditional values and postmodern metrosexual culture interacted to formulate Chinese contemporary masculinity. It is also a project to search for a cultural nationalism presented in these films with the examination of gender politics hidden in these feminisation phenomena. With Laura Mulvey‘s theory of the gaze as a starting point, this research reconsiders the power relationship between the viewing subject and the spectacle to study the possibility of multiple gaze as well as the power of spectacle. -

The Romance of the Three Kingdoms Podcast. This Is Episode 78. Hey
Welcome to the Romance of the Three Kingdoms Podcast. This is episode 78. Hey, guess what? We just passed the midway point of the novel, and guess what? We still don’t have three kingdoms in this Romance of the THREE Kingdoms. But stay with me, because we’re about to take a big step toward that this week. So last time, we left Liu Bei in a bit of a dicey situation. His plot with Zhang Song to take over the Riverlands leaked out, and Zhang Song lost his head because of it. Not only that, Liu Zhang was at long last on to his dear kinsman’s true intentions and ordered his men to strengthen defenses at all the key points. While this was going on, Liu Bei was putting into action his own plan, which called for pretending that he was leaving the Riverlands. His first stop was going to be Fucheng (2,2), and he sent word on ahead to the two generals defending Fu (2) River Pass that he would like to bid them goodbye before he left. The two officers, Yang (2) Huai (2) and Gao (1) Pei (4), had long been suspicious of Liu Bei, and they decided that this would be the perfect opportunity to assassinate him. So they each stashed a dagger under their clothes and took 200 men with them to go see Liu Bei. Meanwhile, as Liu Bei was approaching the Fu (2) River, his military strategist Pang Tong advised him, “If Yang Huai and Gao Pei come to meet us without hesitation, we must be on guard. -

“The Task Is Hers: ” Going Global, Margaret Sanger's Visit to China in 1922
“The Task is Hers: ” Going Global, Margaret Sanger’s Visit to China in 1922 by Mirela David, Ph.D., University of Saskatchewan Abstract: In 1922 Margaret Sanger visited China, enjoying great attention from Chinese social reformers for her feminism and eugenic ideas on birth control. This transnational project probes the dynamics of the intellectual encounter between western theorists such as Sanger and Chinese intellectuals such as Hu Shi. Sanger’s trip echoed images of China as a poster child for poverty and overpopulation in dire need of contraception, and it also ignited a debate in the Chinese press on the eugenic quality of birth control. The insertion of eugenics into other types of debates allowed a deeper discussion of possible solutions for China’s social problems to emerge. I investigate the intersections and explore the tensions between Malthusianism and eugenics, and feminism and eugenics as well as the local specificities of these debates and the translation and reception of Sanger’s speeches. Chinese male intellectuals considered women’s reproduction both in relation to women’s individual bodies, as well as its repercussions for the future of the Chinese nation. These latest considerations were primordial in considering the political potential of birth control advocacy in relation to Marxism and nationalism. The Romance of the Three Kingdoms Podcast. This Is Episode 122. Last
Welcome to the Romance of the Three Kingdoms Podcast. This is episode 122. Last time, just as things were looking good for Zhuge Liang on his Northern expedition, the Wei emperor wised up and recalled the one man that Zhuge Liang was wary of -- Sima Yi. Sima Yi didn’t waste any time being a thorn in Zhuge Liang’s side, swiftly putting down an internal uprising by the renegade general Meng Da. Then he made straight for Jieting (1,2), a small but crucial location that, if it fell into Sima Yi’s hands, would mean the end of Zhuge Liang’s campaign, if not the end of Zhuge Liang himself. So Zhuge Liang sent his military counselor Ma Su and the general Wang Ping to go defend Jieting, reminding them time and again to be careful and to set up camp on the road so that the enemy couldn’t sneak around them. But of course, within minutes of arriving at Jieting, Ma Su allowed his ego to get the better of him and decided to set up camp on a nearby hill instead. Wang Ping objected, but to no avail, so he ended up taking a small detachment of troops and setting up an auxiliary camp near the hill. Sima Yi, meanwhile, had gotten word of this development, and he came to check things out for himself. He and about 100 riders arrived at Jieting on a clear, moonlit night, and they took a good look at the hill where Ma Su had garrisoned his forces. As they rode off, Ma Su watched them from atop the hill and laughed, “If you want to live, then you would not dare to come attack this hill!” He then told his officers, “If the enemy comes, watch for a red flag on the hilltop. -

Through this examination my aim is to bring into greater relief some of the aspirations invested in guoxue by its contemporary protagonists, and also to highlight some of the conundrums associated with those aspirations. KEYWORDS : Guoxue, academic discipline, ruxue, ethnoepistemology, Chinese philosophy, cultural identity ust as the discourse on culture in 1980s China was dubbed by some a 53rd-generation descendant commentators as “culture fever” ( wenhuare ) and the rise of ruxue in of the poet Bai Juyi.…“My J the 1990s was referred to as “ ruxue fever,” so too the strong interest greatest talent is seduction, in guoxue over the past five or so years has been characterised as and not even Confucius is out “guoxue fever.” (1) Although much of the discourse on guoxue over the past of the question. -
The Wheelbarrow (Edited from Wikipedia)
The Wheelbarrow (Edited from Wikipedia) SUMMARY A wheelbarrow is a small hand-propelled vehicle, usually with just one wheel, designed to be pushed and guided by a single person using two handles at the rear, or by a sail to push the ancient wheelbarrow by wind. The term "wheelbarrow" is made of two words: "wheel" and "barrow." "Barrow" is a derivation of the Old English "bearwe" which was a device used for carrying loads. The wheelbarrow is designed to distribute the weight of its load between the wheel and the operator so enabling the convenient carriage of heavier and bulkier loads than would be possible were the weight carried entirely by the operator. As such it is a second-class lever. Traditional Chinese wheelbarrows, however, had a central wheel supporting the whole load. Use of wheelbarrows is common in the construction industry and in gardening. Typical capacity is approximately 100 liters (4 cubic feet) of material. A two-wheel type is more stable on level ground, while the almost universal one-wheel type has better maneuverability in small spaces, on planks or when tilted ground would throw the load off balance. The use of one wheel also permits greater control of the deposition of the load on emptying. HISTORY The earliest wheelbarrows with archaeological evidence in the form of a one-wheel cart come from 2nd century Han Dynasty Emperor Hui's tomb murals and brick tomb reliefs. The painted tomb mural of a man pushing a wheelbarrow was found in a tomb at Chengdu, Sichuan province, dated precisely to 118 AD. -

One of these chemicals forms through the Yang Cycle and is thought to be connected to the hyponastic response. The balance between two types of these compounds determines the differentiation of parenchyma cells, and Kurosawa discovered a type with an ent-kaurene precursor responsible for bakanae. Different members of this group are famous for promoting apical dominance, cell differentiation, phototropism, stem elongation, and flowering. For 10 points, name this class of signaling molecules including auxins, cytokinins, and gibberellins, responsible for inducing physiological processes in plants. ANSWER: plant hormones [Accept ethylene before differentiation of parenchyma cells, accept equivalents.] 2. This dynasty’s government was structured into the Three Departments and Six Ministries and it fell into chaos after being attacked by the warlord Huang Chao. It reached its greatest extent under Emperor Xuanzong, and this empire founded by Emperor Gaozu was defeated at the Battle of the Talas River. It was interrupted briefly by the only female emperor, Empress Wu. Its founder, known as Li Yuan, rose to power after the fall of the Sui Dynasty. The Yan Dynasty was established when it was interrupted by An Lushan’s Rebellion, and it was followed by the Song Dynasty. For 10 points, name this dynasty ruling from 618 to 907 AD that saw the flourishing of art and culture.
