Minutes of Annual General Meeting - Classic & Enthusiasts Motorcycle Club of NSW Inc

Date: 25th November 2013 Location : Rydalmere Public School 397 Victoria Rd, Rydalmere NSW 2116 Meeting Opened: 8:13pm Chaired by: Kim Fleming , Gordon Mitchell chaired the election proceedings Apologies: Keith Sandell, Brian Robertson Present: 37 Presidents Report:: The last twelve months have gone so quickly, it seems like only yesterday we held our 2012 AGM. Can I say that I have enjoyed every minute in this role - it's been a wonderful ride! I would encourage each and every member to consider serving their club in an official capacity, at least once.

I now wish to take this opportunity to say a few words about the Club:

The Club's Future. The club has now grown to well over 500 members and has a very bright future - it is testament to past efforts and the anticipation of future efforts that this club will remain strong for many, many years to come.

The Club's Organisers. Think of our club organisers as prize winning classic motorcycles, people only really see the "end results" and often don't consider the many hours of hard work, preparation and persistence that goes into those "end results". The organisational standards and participation witnessed on rides, rallies and our show day highlights the hard work done by a few for the enjoyment of many - well done to all concerned, you know who you are! Thank you also to our various Branches who facilitate events in their local areas, you too are to be commended and congratulated.

The Club's Members. Thank you to those that have supported their club by attending rides, rallies, events, functions and meetings etc - you are the "true" club members, and the backbone of any successful club.

The Club's Committee. I would like to thank the 2013 committee members for supporting both myself and the club. Thank you to Vice President Gordon Mitchell, Secretary Jason Burton, Treasurer Joe Vella and also Paul Higgins, Jack Martin, Paul Rees and Alan Smith for their input, guidance and support during my time in office.

Finally, I offer my support now and in the future to the incoming committee.

Thank you....

Meeting Closed 10pm ______I have been in many places, but I've never been in Cahoots. Apparently, you can't go alone. You have to be in Cahoots with someone.

I've also never been in Cognito I hear no one recognizes you there.

I have, however, been in Sane. \\They don't have an airport; you have to be driven there. I have made several trips there, thanks to my friends, family and work. I live close so it's a short drive.

I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and I'm not too much on physical activity anymore.

I have also been in Doubt. That is a sad place to go and I try not to visit there too often.

I've been in Flexible, but only when it was very important to stand firm.

Sometimes I'm in Capable, and I go there more often as I'm getting older.

One of my favourite places to be is in Suspense! It really gets the adrenaline flowing and pumps up the old heart! At my age I need all the stimuli I can get!

And, sometimes I think I am in Vincible but life shows me I am not.

People keep telling me I'm in Denial but I'm positive I've never been there before!

I have been in Deepshit many times; the older I get, the easier it is to get there. I actually kind of enjoy it there. So far, I haven't been in Continent, but my travel agent says I'll be going soon. CEMCC of NSW Central West Branch MONTHLY GENERAL MEETING Monday, 2 December, 2013 - Gladstone Hotel Function Room.

Dear Santa,

I am writing to you because I really have been a good little boy all year and put out the garbage bins (sometime on the wrong day) and brought in the clothes when it was pouring rain.

I always put the toilet seat down when I'm told and eat up all the ice cream in the fridge so it looks tidy.

Can I have one of them new NORTON cafe retro bikes for Christmas because they don't use much petrol and will save the planet so the carbon won't kill the whales.

It's OK to leave it in the carport if the front doors locked, but just make sure the keys and rego papers are with it.

Santa I hope you are in a better mood this year - because last year when I asked for a yellow Porsche 911 the reindeers shat in our pool.

Thanks Santa for reading my letter and remember to put the empty stubbies in the recycle bin on the way out and not roll them under the couch (like you did last year).

A tally of rides held this year also showed Wayne Martin to have attended the most and he was awarded the yearly trophy in recognition of his efforts on his trusty Matchless. Other Events: The Toy run had a reasonable turn out. W.O.I. is scheduled for Sunday 4 th May 2014. A professional Company, “Bright Events” has taken over the management of the event and planning is well underway. Last year’s DVD is now available and a copy has been supplied to the club Library. General Business: The Wings Over Illawarra Air show be a club plated event moved by Terry Campbell and sec. by Adrian Wallace. From Lester a big thank you goes to the Machine Examiners who give up their time freely. Lester presented a trophy to Col and Rahna Elliot for all the work they have done for the club through the year. Raffle: Winners; Ron Foye, Marie Furney, Merle Graham, Mick Mellin, Ken Kurmond, Terry Fitzgerald and Col Elliot. Programme Officer: No display tonight. Everybody invited to partake of the generous amount of goodies provided by members and there partners.

Meeting closed: 8.40 pm. Secretary: Mick Mellin

Illawarra Branch Minutes 13 January 2014 Meeting Opened: 7.39pm Chaired by: Lester Hamilton Attendance : 69

Apologies: Ted Conran, John Sproule, Don Blacklock, Robert Tobler, Barry Jarvis, Scott Nielsen and Ron Foye. Stephen Allman Visitors: Nil. New Members: Previous Minutes: Taken as read and moved to be accepted by Col Elliott, Sec by Ian Richardson. Nil business arising. Correspondence In: Magazines X 1 plus OBA. Flyers : Invitation to the pre 1931 Tour in Cowra 2 to 4 May 2014.

Treasurer: Closing balance of $10,873.59 with expenses out for the Christmas Party. Moved to be accepted by Bill Furney, Sec. Col Elliott. Welfare: Eric Debenham has had Back trouble and has been told not to use the mower any longer, Ted Conran was in Hospital for a period just before Christmas, and it appears he is having Prostate problems and thanks all for their concern. He also expresses a wish, at this stage, to not have visitors. John Fisher is here tonight and appears to be on the mend.

Library / Technical : A book on Casey Stoner has been purchased which is titled “Riding on the Limit” and is available. The only Technical issue at present is a Main shaft / Flywheel problem that required the manufacture of a complete new Shaft.

Regalia: New Shirts are in the mail and will soon be available.

Public Relations: Ted is not present tonight, however Lester brings to our attention that one of our members, Derek Shepherd competed in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht race in his own boat and turned in a respectable finish in the first ten.

Events: The Tortoise Run was conducted under threatening skies and so did a short run to Hill 60. Sunday’s Ride was cancelled due to bad weather. The next Tortoise ride will be a short local run, which is the main intention of this ride, for members to exercise their smaller or older machines. The Sunday Ride will be to Shoalhaven Heads for lunch. Brian Martin filled in for Ron, who is not present tonight. Midweek Ride was well attended, with 20 bikes leaving Key Batteries, 5 of those on club plates and heading to for a viewing of the new spillway and lunch in the picnic area. Members from the Camden area met the group along the way and had a very enjoyable ride. The next mid week will be to Gerringong with lunch at the Bowling Club.

Other Events: A reminder that next weekend is the Goulburn Swap meet. The St George Club held a Demonstration day at Bankstown Trotting Track on the dirt section and the display was fast and furious with a lot of Sliders and Flat Trackers it is recommended for those interested next year. Col Elliott attended the Vintage Club ride on Sunday 12 th which was held in the local Douglas Park, Picton and Camden areas and was very well attended by members of our club.

General Business: It is moved by Dennis Tobler that the pre ’31 tour held in Cowra on the 2 nd to 4 th May 2014 be a club plated run. Sec by Col Elliott. Bernie brings to our attention that mention is made in the General Business section of the minutes from Central West Branch referring to a review of the RMS Conditional Registration Scheme. It appears that the informant, Harold Upston is from Shannons Insurance and it will be interesting to see what changes, if any, are to be made to the Scheme.

Raffle: No Raffle was conducted tonight due to the lack of lighting in the venue also contributing to an abbreviated meeting.

Programme Officer: Ventura spoke on another of his very well restored and cherished Ducati’s. This time a single cylinder Shotgun. He gave an informative explanation of work carried out to get the machine to its present condition and answered many questions relating to the bike. All were then invited outside to view it before the natural light left us in complete darkness.

Meeting closed: 8.12pm. Secretary: Mick Mellin CEMCC Illawarra Ride Report December 2013. Saturday 14 th .Great little ride to Hill 60 at Port Kembla. Fifteen riders took part, 12 being on Historic registration. Good to see Lee Jones out for his first tortoise ride on his 500cc Matchless! Sunday 15 th .This run was slated as a ride to the Southern Highlands to view the archaeological site of the 19 th Century Fitzroy Iron Works, however due to wet weather the ride was cancelled for the THIRD time. Previous rides were called off due to bushfires and bad weather. Better luck will be required for later in the year. Jim Cummins

Vale Alan Pride

Foundation and Life Member of the Classic and Enthusiasts Motor Cycle Club Alan Pride passed away on 27 th November 2013. His funeral was held in the Garden Chapel Castlebrook Rouse Hill. Alan is probably remembered by most of his passion for BMWs in particular his K100 and R69S outfits with his wife Pat and the dog in the sidecar ,but his interest was wide ranging covering such makes as Levis, Norton, Ariel, and Vincent. Alan was instrumental in conjunction with Keith Sandell and Bruce Gow in organizing the first CEMCC rally at Mudgee where there were over Three Hundred participants He then went on to organize many more rallies and show days for the CEMCC Alan also was the Permits Officer for the Club Plates and naturally he had 001 Plate. Alan was a Family man and our condolences go to his Son and Daughters. ______

All other forms of renewal will not be accepted Tortoise Run November was programmed to take a coast route to finish up at the now Annual Port Kembla Billy Cart Derby, but a miserable day – weather wise – severely restricted the turn out at Key batteries to a mere seven who set off just after 1pm, with ominous cloud cover to the south east forebodingly pointing to more rain in the not-too-distant future. As it turned out, the rain struck the riders as they motored along Northcliff Drive at Warrawong and one Bantam rider decided to call it a day. Strangely enough it only rained from Lake Heights to Port Kembla where parking at 1.30pm was virtually non-existent, but “canny” Jim with last years experience under his belt led the riders to the shell garage at the top of Wentworth Str where – by moving some barricades – the bikes were slipped into an excellent and secure spot. It was only a few yards to the starting point so the riders had an excellent vantage point for the rest of the afternoon, and as a bonus the rain had disappeared and didn’t return so it was a good outing for the small crew who took a gamble on the weather.

The November club run was a complete washout, (no pun intended), as rain for most of the Saturday night and into Sunday morning ensured a turnout of nil at Key Batteries for the 10am start except the scribe with large umbrella, who then beat a hasty retreat back to the safety of A.M.C. Corner. End of the action for the day.

Christmas Party Illawarra 2013. This annual event was staged at the home of Col and Rana Elliot at Orangeville who had graciously volunteered to fill the void which – for the past few years had been organized by Jean and Denis Tobler at their Robertson domicile. The bright sunny aspect of the Sunday morning had a roll up of some twenty machines on the forecourt of Key Batteries so the stage looked to be set for quite a large crowd to ultimately descend on Orangeville for the usual expansive repast. As it turned out such was the case and a total attendance figure around the 90 mark again proved the point as to just how popular this annual event has become for the Illawarra branch. With Rana organizing the lunch time repast it was to be expected that no stone would be left unturned and that was how it turned out. Rana and her team of helpers were able to feed the hungry throng, and everyone was very pleased with the result. The setting of the Elliotts farm at Orangeville is perfect, and parking of the many vehicles was organized and provided no hassles.

Illawarra end of year social event for 2013 really caught on this year, (probably as a spin-off after the great turn-up for the prior Sundays Christmas party at Orangeville when eighty six attended. For a Friday night sporting rather inclement weather, a total nearing the forty mark indicated that the venue – Collegians Balgownie Club – is quite a popular venue for this type of social gathering. To add to the enjoyment of the night President Lester was able to “pull rank”, and get our group to have the facilities of a private function room, thus ensuring the groups privacy for the duration of our tenure. The food was good – and not expensive – and the company was great so what more could one ask. As always you had to be careful of the motocrossers who would run over your foot if you weren’t careful but it was great to see some of the girls present who are on the recovery road after injury/hospitalization. Also the two lasses who made the trip south in early November for the A.J.S. and Matchless Rally in Albury were able to regale their experiences. All in all an excellent social outing with a good attendance.

December Mid-Week Run. A cloudy day but still on the warm side saw eighteen machines gather at Mt Keira Rd for the convoluted run around the Picton/Appin area before culminating at the Stanwell Park beach area for lunch. The group of riders covered a wide cross-section of those members, who – no longer – are obligated to turn up for a weekly stipend, but there are a group just waiting in the wings for such a retirement opportunity to get out and about at their leisure. We even had one rider from Oberon who was on his way back to the mountain town in between Goulburn and Bathurst. All are welcome on our runs.

Sad to hear towards the end of 2013 of the demise of long time C.E.M.C.C. members Allan Pride and Bill Theodore who had been great rally attendees during the eighties and nineties. Both men were true believers of the vintage era, and the 600cc Levis with plunger rear suspension of Allan Pride was long coveted by many enthusiasts for many years, whilst the Norton CS1 of Bill Theodore was an icon machine that – apart from needing regular doses of extra oil – appeared to be a very reliable machine. Both men were well known to many of the older Illawarra members and will be sadly missed on the classic scene.

Saturday 7 th December was the day programmed for the Illawarra area Toy Run, an the usual route from Shellharbour to the Mall in Wollongong was again the most direct path. A glorious day – weather wise – saw the greatest variety of colourful Harleys seen for quite sometime. The Illawarra branch had around fifteen riders a few of which were Lester Hamilton, Simon Harmey, Allan Penrose, John Hughes, John Harman, Wayne Penrose, Peter Van Linden, Jess Van Linden and Alison Potter, (apologies for those I’ve missed). As always, the amount and quality of the toys will bring pleasure to many disadvantaged children when distributed by the St Vincent De Paul, and other charities. As now the “norm” Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbury was a passenger in the lead machine (a trike), and looked quite smart with leather jacket. Once again, a very good charitable exercise supported well by the C.E.M.C.C. so well done by those who attended.

Club meeting night, (9 th Dec), was the 2013 Xmas night and a turnout of around eighty five saw quite a number of wives and partners in attendance and I feel sure the ladies had an enjoyable night. The variety of food included many culinary delights to titillate the palate, and long-time member – and food tasting expert Barry Ryan – gave the night a complete thumbs up, including the curried egg sandwiches, (standard fare after thirty years), some light-as-a-feather scones, cherries and many other delicacies. As well the night is a very social outing that enables a lot of talk fest to be got through. Well done to Jim and his organizers for a great result.

The December Tortoise Run looked to be in “dire straits” when around the 12 o’clock mark there was rather some sharp showers of rain around several suburbs on the Illawarra coast. However by 1pm fifteen machines had gathered at Key Batteries including mostly club-plated machines and small sized machines. Convenor Jims idea of around the lake run got somewhat sidetracked when the rain interrupted the route so a decision to run down to Hill 60, (Port Kembla), where a social gathering was convened, before a later interlude for coffee polished off a good afternoon. Excellent to see new member Lee Jones out and about on his newly refurbished 1949 Matchless G80S 500cc machine, and while he admits there is a fair way to go to bring it up to his expectations, nevertheless it is currently completely rideable, and he will enjoy it while the “touting up” continues in 2014. Close at hand Allan Penrose who has played a big part in its rejuvenation. Also seen on an Ariel on the run was John Hughes who had ridden his Bantam to Al Penrose’s house where it had broken down. Al Came to the rescue and loaned him an Ariel for the ride.

Sunday 15 th Dec was the December Club outing and the last run of the year, so it was expected that it would be a well-supported ride. However a call came to A.M.C. Corner around 9.30am from convenor Jim to indicate that a blanket of fog was covering the Dapto area and the rain pattern was all over the coast. At 9.50am the A.M.C. Corner resident walked over to Key Batteries with umbrella through heavy rain to find a number of riders on the forecourt? Well 0, (zero), is a number isn’t it? So everyone had apparently got the message – and stayed at home – quite understandably when the weather conditions and forecast for the day are looked at. January Tortoise Run – Illawarra. An impending Saturday afternoon run on 19 th January saw rain falling on A.M.C. Corner at 12 pm, and the outlook looked distinctly unpromising. But by 2pm – with the roads dried up – a dozen riders gathered on the forecourt of Key Batteries, which is probably half the number that has been the normal attendance over the past few Saturday afternoon runs. The odd drop of rain fell on the riders as they left at 2pm, but undeterred the enthusiastic dozen – quite a number of whom were riding small engined machines, (as are very well suited to this type of low-key event), - set off for the northward directional run along the close-to-the-beach roads! A late comer appeared at A.M.C. Corner at 2.30pm armed with a very plausible alibi, (he had to assist in a rescue operation for his better-halfs car?), and he was able to belatedly join the group for afternoon tea at the Bulli Beach kiosk. Again, for this Saturday afternoons short event that is mainly centred on the flatlands of the Illawarra coast, a reasonable turnout was a dozen, but these outings are primarily targeted at the small size, the much older, and the seldom seen machines that are undoubtedly historic plated among Classic Club members, but are seldom seen out and about on club runs.

Illawarra Club Run January. Sunday 20 th January saw the club run to Shoalhaven Heads via Berry for lunch and once again a dozen riders gathered at Key Batteries for the 10am start. A further four riders joined the run at the Dunmore lay bye so that made twenty four attending over the weekend which – for January and the early outings of 2014 was probably not too bad an outcome. Good to see the Brothers Grimm, (sorry Noel and Garry), in attendance on both days – well done – and the outings gave an opportunity to use two different styles of bike. The run was completed with no machine dramas, which always makes for a pleasing outcome, and hopefully is a premature indication that the events of the next twelve months will have very good support and results for the Illawarra Branch.

It is always interesting to hear of C.E.M.C.C.members who excel at two wheeled sports, but even more unique when the involvement can sometimes appear to be widely diversified from anything to do with the motorcycling fraternity. Such as member - Derek Sheppard – resides in the Illawarra and is completely devoted to the water sport of yachting – and in no small way either – so it was no surprise to see Derek’s name listed as the skipper of a yacht competing with the “big boys” in the spectacular and world famous Sydney to Hobart race that started on Boxing Day 2013. Derek’s yacht – Black Sheep – after running quite well up to the Sydney Heads and keeping in the first fifty or nearly one hundred entries, then proceeded on a course further out to sea as the congested troupe sailed down the eastern coast on the long journey. Derek finally piloted the yacht into Hobart Harbour in 46 th overall position, and just finishing this testing experience is a major accomplishment in itself, so well done Derek as you have done yourself proud. Just as a matter of interest, Derek’s two wheeled steed is a very desirable 1938 Ariel 350cc Red hunter formerly owned and restored by former member Harry Neilson, and anyone who has seen one of Harry’s restorations knows they were a machine to be desired. Just as an afterthought, its great to note that Black Sheep came 8 th in its class so Derek can be very proud of that achievement in a race that not all entrants finish.

The postponed January 1 st , (New Years Day run), was designated for a week later, (not a “day” later as one official had surmised), and saw a turnout of around twenty arrive at Mt Keira Rd, even though showers were predicted. A difficult starting syndrome was experienced by a Matchless 500cc Single before the spark plug was “given a belt” by Allan Penrose which smartened it up no end and kept it in line for the rest of the day. A good day out to start the year off so lets hope it continues much as status quo for the rest of 2014.
