Tortoise Run Illawarra. A sunny but chilly day enticed eighteen riders to participate in convenor Jim Cummins run on May 18 th which took the form of a lair-back tour of the periphery of Lake Illawarra. One of the Illawarra's main attractions on the water sports, fishing and boating scene. The circumnavigation of this uniwue body of water is one item that many South Coast people very seldom consider as an exercise of interest, and is really a very enjoyable short tour which opens the eyes to an aspect of the coast as often as not generally ignored by locals and visitors alike. Some of the sections of the circular road I had not traversed for many years, zo the run took on the format of an eye-opener for me, as I would expect for others on the outing. Culmination of the run was afternoon coffee at a little cafe at Yallah, where many – and varied – discussions waxed lyrical. Theres no doubt that these “Tortoise” runs on the Saturday afternoon following the monthly club meeting have certainly developed a solid support base, and the good numbers of Historic plated machines which attend, tend to indicate that they are here for the long term.

The Sunday Mid-monthly club run for the Illawarra branch saw a good turnout at Key Batteries of the eighteen machines, (same as the Tortoise Run on the prior Saturday). This run was scheduled to traverse the Tablelands with a stop at Thirlmere before carrying on to The Oaks, where a garage inspection had been arranged before a picnic lunch was organised for the riders, by those “Doyens” of Orangeville, Rana and Col Elliot. In all the eighteen enthusiasts from Key Batteries picked up a couple more riders from the Picton area, along with four people in cars, including Ron from Picton sporting a new fashion (boot?) in footwear which is helping his recovery from an unexpected “hiccough” at the peripheral of the Yellow Rock Tortoise Run, where lots of protagonists had difficulty in the tight turnaround. As always – Col and Rana Elliot once again provided the sustenance for the lunch break which was extremely appreciated by the gathering of 25 people. A very enjoyable outing in good autumn weather, and sincere thanks to Rana and Col for filling in the lunch sustenance.

June Mid-Week Run, Illawarra. Wed 5 th June saw a rather dismal aspect greet the dawn, and while no rain was forecast anywhere on the South Coast by venue of the radar, nevertheless it carried the inference that winter had come upon us and riders on club runs would really have to get the weatherproof gear out of the closet in anticipation of a chilly outlook. However fourteen enthusiasts gathered at the Mt Keira Rd staging point on a variety of machines ranging from a pre-war Rudge (Denis), right through to an up-market Ducati, (Fred), so the day started with a wide cross section of bikes, (and riders). As well, there were a trio of non-starters, Lester with the flu, Barry R. with a slow recovery from the eye operation, and the A.M.C. encumbent with a variety of afflictions, which can't be mentioned in the pursuit of good taste. A couple of early to mid-fifties Singles arrived from Sydney, after a chilly crossing of Maddens Plains, and a trio were down from the Orangeville area also inferring that the mercury was also a few degrees lower on the Tablelands than on the coast. A late check in with one of the riders indicated that a further twelve machines joined the run – ten at South Kiama and two at Berry – so a final total of twenty six showed that even the onset of winter could not deter the enthusiastic rider as long as the weather aspect for the day looks promising, i.e. no rain on the forecast and even a bit of sun on view. Convenor Ron continues the year with very good and encouraging numbers on the mid-week event!

The Illawarra monthly meeting for June, unfortunately fell on the Monday of the holiday weekend thus leading to the nightly turn-out just touching the 50 mark, (considerably down on the usual 65 to 70). Also, unfortunately the programmed bike for the night became unavailable, but club stalwart Adrian Wallace comfortably filled in with his immaculate 850 Norton Commando after riding in from the upper reaches of the Calderwood precinct on a night that was cold and also wet at different times, but the machine looked like it was just off the showroom floor. The Club night itself was a format of rather intense discussion mainly raised by a club member who challenged the interpretation of the committee meeting of the 7 th May in Sydney where it was stated “Et Al” that any machine examiner who did not wish to carry out the instruction to record all details of club registrations of Historic motorcycles for the purpose of a club register of such detail be obliged to cease his tenure immediately as the club official and hand in his club stamp! The club member who voiced the statement against this requirement indicated that this stand appeared to be a rather heavy handed approach, (rather like using a jack hammer to crack a walnut), and a subsequent call for a show of hands on the option proved that such was the case, as far as the meeting was concerned. Unfortunately, a visitor on the night was club secretary Jason Burton, who unwittingly was rather the victim of an unexpected ambush on the topic, but – to his credit – handled the digression with aplomb, and indicated that a subsequent committee may cast a different light on the obviously vexed topic. Others at the meeting were Mick Daly, back from a new experience at his first Coffs Harbour Rally, Barry Jarvis with nearly a clean bill of health, Stephen Craig hopefully on the recovery trail, Ron Hodge with his ankle progressing well, so hopefully all Illawarra people on the sick list will soon be firing on all cylinders again.

14 I have a little Satnav It lists the vehicles just in front It sits there in my car And all those to the rear A Satnav is a driver's friend And taking this into account It tells you where you are It specifies my gear.

I have a little Satnav I'm sure no other driver I've had it all my life Has so helpful a device It’s better than the normal ones For when we leave and lock the car My Satnav is my wife It still gives its advice

It gives me full instructions It fills me up with counselling Especially how to drive Each journey's pretty fraught "It's thirty miles an hour", it says So why don't I exchange it "You're doing thirty five" And get a quieter sort?

It tells me when to stop and start Ah well, you see, it cleans the house, And when to use the brake Makes sure I'm properly fed, And tells me that it's never ever It washes all my shirts and things Safe to overtake And - keeps me warm in bed!

It tells me when a light is red Despite all these advantages And when it goes to green And my tendency to scoff, It seems to know instinctively I do wish that once in a while Just when to intervene I could turn the damned thing off !!

DUNGOG WEEK-END

Another week-end ride to Dungog has come and gone, this is the Fifteenth journey to Dungog initionally organized by Jack Martin in 1998. Originally run in September we changed to May this year so that the CEMCC Rally could be scheduled for September. We were extremely lucky with the weather ,a wet week followed by rain all night Friday ,Saturday was fine sunny and a bit chilly , A perfect day for motorcycling, especially on a Classic Bike. We had fourteen starters with Jack in the back-up truck ,Ben Eden decided not to participate due to not feeling up to scratch. A nice leisurely ride to Calga up the old Pacific Highway and then a blast to Peats Ridge for a catch-up and a cuppa. It warmed up a little and we had an enjoyable ride to Wollombi for lunch’ .Then onto Cessnock and Branxton where we followed a secondary rode through to Paterson and onto Dungog. The accommodation and meals at the Royal were excellent. After a full breakfast of bacon, eggs and sausages and a clear blue sky we journeyed over the hills and dales to Singleton for a top up with fuel. This road is now much better than it was fifteen years ago From Singleton over the windy Putty Road to the Grey Gums Café for a well-earned rest and refreshments. From here every one made for home. All in all a very good week-end, good roads little traffic and nobody was lost , there were no breakdowns Why don’t you come next time .

The first run of winter proved to be a good one, with somewhere over 20 bikes showing up at the start at Rouse Hill. Perfect riding conditions at the start of the run were predicted to turn to rain in the afternoon, so it was we set off intending to get home before the rain. What a mix of bikes we had, with several old Triumphs, some modern Triumphs, a couple of Norton Commandos, Honda 750/4s, Kawasaki 750/3, Ducati 860, BSA Thunderbolt, some moderns even couple of trail bikes. We had a mix of riders from the very experienced to the learner; it was great to see such a turn out for a run. I believe Paul had to call ahead a couple of time to the cafe to increase the numbers to be catered for before we started the run. We headed out along Windsor road and right at McGraths Hill for the run through Pitt Town and on through Cattai up to Wiseman’s Ferry, before dropping down to cross the river on the Webb’s Creek Ferry. Over the river my Ducati proved cantankerous and refused to start until most of the other riders had left, but a few others stayed around to ensure the bike would start, with a lot of kicking and a bit of cursing it fired. We went on our way and a few miles down the road came across a group stopped with a Norton just having cut out and now refusing to start. There was no apparent cause for the problem, plenty of fuel, good battery, some spark, for a while it was looking like the Norton would have to be left there for pickup, but in the end a change of spark plugs and a fiddle with the wiring got it going again and we were all off on to St Albans for lunch as if it had never happened. The cafe was closed to the public, but had opened just for our group if we had the numbers and I think they would have been pleasantly surprised with the numbers we had on the day. It probably overwhelmed them to start with, but we all had our lunch in the end. The predictions all week had been for rain in the afternoon and with clouds on the horizon we headed for home. Some continued on the road to Wiseman’s Ferry which had a fair section of dirt, while most opted for the fully tarred route back the way we came to Webb’s Creek Ferry. I took the dirt option even though I had washed the bike only last week, following Peter Boros on a Honda 750/4 and Rick Roberts on his Kawasaki 750/3, the dirt road was pretty good with only small potholes and not too much loose gravel or dust we were able to sit on 80 or so most of the way. It’s good to get on the dirt occasionally as you have to concentrate just that little bit extra, particularly on these narrow roads where you might meet a car coming the other way at any time. A stop at the petrol station for the Kawasaki and we were off again, with Peter and I turning off at Maroota to head back through Pitt Town, a few spots of rain started to fall as we reached Riverstone and by the time we reached my home it was obvious that the real rain was not far away, perfect timing to end a great ride for the first day of Winter.
