Introduction

These notes contain the details of each of the checkpoints to be manned by WICEN. Other checkpoints are included for information purposes. Each section includes information on; • How to get there • Equipment required • Radio channels to use In general, masts and some power are useful for simplex communications with adjacent checkpoints. The 2007 Hawkesbury Canoe Classic booklet will be provided to one operator at each checkpoint. This has, as well as information about the race, a map of the whole course.

The dirt road goes through some private property and over some cattle grids before reaching the Park. Follow the road past a couple of buildings until you see the river. Proceed in the down river direction. The checkpoint is on the wharf to your left.

Equipment required 70cm voice for Kurrajong repeater. Operation This is the first checkpoint and shows a degree of infant mortality among the paddlers. There are usually a few withdrawals here. The site isn't near any facilities, including power, so take everything. Vehicles are parked above the wharf where the checkpoint is located. The checkpoint generally closes at about 8 pm. DELTA Ski Club near UBD Map Ref 50 F4 Topo Map Ref Wilberforce 9030-I-N 023910 Travel along Cattai Rd from Windsor Rd. Turn left into Sackville Ferry Rd and travel to the Sackville Ferry. The entrance to the Ski Club is 100 m before Sackville Ferry, on last left bend in road. If approaching via Wisemans or Dural/Galston on Old Northern Road, turn into Road (signposted to Old Pitt Town and Windsor), later turn right into Sackville Ferry Road. In the HCC handbook, Wisemans Ferry Road is shown as Cattai Road. “Ski Club Members” sign is very worn. Checkpoint is on beach behind buildings, slightly to left on entry. We generally set up near the buildings.

Equipment required 70cm into Kurrajong repeater. 2m simplex for Charlie and Echo. 2m packet for MEX/APRS (optional) A mast is essential for simplex packet and voice comms with Charlie and Echo. Delta has reliable 240V power, but BYO extension leads (20m min), power board, and lights. Also own table and chair. Operation This major checkpoint has poor road access and the race handbook suggests people use E instead. However, it can still get busy, since the beach here is much better. It is also quite a long stretch to E. Paddler cut-off time is 2300 and you can expect this checkpoint to close at about midnight. Radio Channels

Cross the river on the ferry and proceed up Sackville Road for approximately 400 metres and turn right onto West Portland Road. Proceed for 5.69 kms then turn right onto Laws Farm Road. Laws Farm Road is sealed for the first 3.8 kms until it comes to Ski Lodge Road on the right. Do not turn onto Ski Lodge Road but proceed on the unsealed section of Laws Farm Road for 0.95 kms. Beware of potholes and narrow turns. When you have traveled the 0.95 kms on the unsealed portion yo u come to the entrance of “Johnstons Farm” on the right at 480 Laws Farm Road. Turn into this property and follow its track past the house then turning left towards the river along a fence line on the right. After about 150 metres you hang a left and follow the river past 3 or 4 caravans. Approximately 80 metres past these caravans is the grass boat ramp sloping, gently to the river. Equipment required 70cm into Kurrajong or Wiseman’s Ferry repeater. 2m simplex for Foxtrot and Delta. 2m packet for MEX/APRS (optional) 240V Power is available. Bring battery backup anyway. BYO extension leads (20m min), power board, and lights. Also own table and chair. Operation The paddlers' cutoff time for the checkpoint is midnight and should close between midnight and 1pm. Equipment required Main voice network access on 2m or 70cm into the Berowra repeaters. 2m packet for MEX/APRS (optional) Berowra access will need a fair bit of power and/or antenna gain. A mast and yagi will be a great help. Operation Spencer is the last land-based checkpoint before the finish. Further, the water conditions are greatly different as they cross a more open waterway. Beams will be helpful to point up and down stream as well. Try simplex to K and Finish The checkpoint has a paddler cut-off time of 10 am. You can expect to close down sometime around then. FINISH Deerubbun Reserve, Mooney Mooney UBD Map Ref 55 N5 Topo Map Ref Cowan 9130-4-N 835878 Adjacent to bridge, north side, upstream. As per the instructions in the race booklet map.

Equipment required 2m or 70cm into Berowra repeaters 2m packet for Berowra digi (optional) 2m packet tracker for APRS (radio, GPS and tracker to be provided by VK2XGK) For 70cm voice it is suggested that you have 2 radios and 2 antennas for voice to allow optimisation of one antenna for transmit and the other for receive. The masts can be portable stands of 8-12 feet in height with small yagis or folded dipoles. This is due to the chronic multipath from the ridges to the south of the finish location. Expect to have to move the antennas a few times in the night. Always run significant power to ensure a good signal into the system. Other radios for simplex. Operation There are probably many relieved faces appearing from the water. Radio Channels

Version 1.01, 2009 Page 19 HCC 2009 WICEN Checkpoint Information CLOSE DOWN Somewhere on the Hawkesbury River UBD Map Ref ------Topo Map Ref Starts at Windsor, Finishes at Mooney Mooney. Like a slow canoe.

Equipment required 2m and 70 cm, for voice and packet at least 20 watts each. Antennas for lashing to the boat (same boat as last year). Headphones are essential. Power may be available from the boat - check with the Skipper. Shoes suitable for a boat (rubber soled, eg joggers - NOT hard soled). It is suggested that you are set up to transmit and receive on both 2m and 70cm voice channels simultaneously. This way you can transmit on one band and monitor your signal on the other. This is of great advantage in some reaches of the river where the signals are very variable. Suggested operation would be:

Role/coverage Action Upper course Transmit/receive on VK2RWK, monitor VK2RWS 2m Mid-course Transmit/receive on VK2RAF monitor VK2RWS 2m Lower Course Transmit/ receive on 70cm VK2RWS and monitor on 2m VK2RWS or vice versa as the path conditions change If you are careful with your monitoring whilst you are transmitting you can avoid acoustic feedback and hear when you have dropped out of the system momentarily and pause until you regain the system and then continue the message. The 2m VK2 RWS system will be hear able for much of the course though it will not always be accessible. Operation When closing down checkpoints, it's the Close-Down boat's decision to do so. The HCC official on board with you should be satisfied that all canoes are accounted for in the following stage. It's the major reason we're on the river in the first place. As each checkpoint (land or water) is closed inform Net Control as well.
