Several intrusions from the Seiland Igneous Province have been dated by ID-TIMS U–Pb zircon and monazite analyses. The Hasvik Gabbro on the island of Sørøy, previously assigned an age of 700 33 Ma by Sm–Nd, yields a U–Pb zircon age of 562 6 Ma, within error of the Storelv Gabbro± (569 5Ma)anda diorite associated with the Breivikbotn± Gabbro (571 4 Ma). Various intrusions on± the Øksfjord peninsula give nearly identical ages of 565 9Ma(gabbro),566± 4 Ma (monzonite), 565 5Ma (monzodiorite), 570 9 Ma (norite), and 566± 1 Ma (orthopyroxenite).± These ages overlap with± those from Sørøy, and define± a single and short-lived± period of gabbroic (to felsic) magmatism for the region between 570 and 560 Ma, pre-dating a subordinate episode of alkalic magmatism at 530–520 Ma. The U–Pb ages contradict the previous geochronological interpretation for the Finnmark area, which implied a period of 250 m.y. for the emplacement of the SIP intrusions. The new age data also clearly distinguish the Seiland intrusions, emplaced into the Sørøy Group metasediments of the Kalak Nappe Complex, from several older granitic intrusions (c.850to600Ma)thatcuttheSørøyGroupfarther east and south. The coincident ages of the different Seiland intrusive bodies also contradict the previous structural model for the area, which posits that the different gabbro bodies were emplaced at intervals, with compressional deformation affecting the gabbros between periods of intrusion. The short time span between the main plutonic phases strongly suggests that the mechanism for the emplacement of mafic magma operated in a single, probably extensional, tectonic regime. The mafic intrusions were later deformed and metamorphosed to at least amphibolite facies, most likely by the Scandian (420 Ma) phase of the Caledonian Orogeny. The project will investigate these industries in transition and the architectural opportunities they have. Today the locally based fish production is economically challenged by the growing industry of fish farming and large fishing vessels with production on board. Because of its incapability of competing, the differences of these industries will only diverge further. The traditional industries along the coast decreases in size, but survives focusing on high quality products and local traditions (Fig.2).

  • On the Occurrence of Archaeocyathids in the Caledonian Metamorphic Rocks of Sørøy and Their Stratigraphical Significance
ON THE OCCURRENCE OF ARCHAEOCYATHIDS IN THE CALEDONIAN METAMORPHIC ROCKS OF SØRØY AND THEIR STRATIGRAPHICAL SIGNIFICANCE C. H. HOLLAND & B. A. STURT Holland, C. H. & Sturt, B. A.: On the occurrence of Archaeocyathids in the Caledonian metamorphic rocks of Sørøy, and their stratigraphical signi ficance. Norsk Geologisk Tidsskrift, Vol. 50, pp. 341-355. Oslo 1970. Archaeocyathids are described for the first time from Norway, from the metamorphosed Caledonian rocks of Sørøy. The large collection of material comprises poorly preserved, unidentified ajacicyathids showing the unusual feature of increase by budding or fission. Thus, while the forms described indicate most broadly speaking a Lower to early Middle Cambrian age, it is at !east likely that their age is late Lower Cambrian or possibly early Middle Cambrian. This stratigraphical age for part of the SØrØy succes sion has a considerable import in the dating of the great zone of meta morphic rocks throughout the western part of Northern Norway. This is of further significance in providing a lower age limit to the maximum expres sion of Caledonian orogenic metamorphism in the region. C. H. Holland, Department of Geology, Trinity College, Dublin 2, Ire/and. B. A. Sturt, Geologisk Institutt, University of Bergen, Joachim Frieles Gt. l, Bergen, Norway. Introduction One of the major difficulties in the· correlation of stratigraphical sequences and structural units in the extensive tract of highly deformed 'Eo-Cambrian' and 'Cambro-Silurian' rocks in the western zone of the Caledonides of nor them Norway is the lack of fauna! remains in these sequences. The only described fossil assemblages are, in fact, the mid-Ordovician fossils found at the Furulandfeastem Sjønstå Group junction of the Lomivann tract in the Sulitjelma area of Nordland (Nicholson 1966, Nicholson & Rutland 1969), and the Silurian fauna in the low-grade rocks of eastem Magerøy, Finnmark (Henningsmoen 1961, Føyn 1967a).

  • Reinterpretation of Finnmarkian Deformation on Western Sørøy, Northern Norway
Reinterpretation of Finnmarkian deformation on western Sørøy, northern Norway ALLAN G. KRILL & BOUKE ZWAAN Krill, A. G. & Zwaan, B.: Reinterpretation of Finnmarkian deformation on western Sørøy, northern Norway. Norsk Geologisk Tidsskrift, Vol. 67, pp. 15-24. Oslo 1987. ISSN 0029-196X. New fieldobservations of the relationships between dikes of the Seiland Igneous Province and psammites of the Klubben Group on western Sørøy have led to the interpretation that the psammites were not deformed or folded by orogenesis either before or during intrusion of the dikes. Folds with axial planes parallel to the dikes developed afterdike intrusion, and the dikes appear to cut undeformed sedimentary bedding and intrusion-related migmatitic textures and fold structures, not orogenic foliations and folds. These results contrast with previous studies which concluded that the Late Cambrian to Earl y Ordovician Seiland intrusions on Sørøy were syn-orogenic, interpretations originally used to define the Finnmarkian phase of the Caledonian orogeny. Relationships between Seiland intrusions and country rocks elsewhere in Finnmark, and other evidence for Finnmarkian regionalmetamorphism and thrust tectonics in northern Norway, should thus be re-examined. The syenites, carbonatites, layered gabbros and ultramafic rocks of the Seiland Igneous Province may be related to continental rifting and development of the Iapetus ocean; not mantle diapirism within a subduction zone, as previously interpreted. • The Husfjord Plutonic Complex, Sørøy, Northern Norway
The Husfjord Plutonic Complex, Sørøy, Northern Norway DAVID L. SPEEDYMAN Speedyman, D.L. 1983: The Husfjord plutonic complex, Sørøy, northern Norway. Norges geol. Unders, 378, 1-48. The Husfjord area of Sørøy is underlain by a plutonic complex which has been emplaced into Vendian to Cambrian metasediments during the Finnmarkian phase of the Caledonian orogeny. The metasedimentary envelope of the complex consists mainly of a sequence of psammites, pelites, semipelites, calc-silicate schists and marbles, which have undergone prolonged regional metamorphism and two principal episodes of deformation. The regional metamorphic event commenced before the first folding episode, reached its peak in the almandine-amphibolite facies between the deformation episodes, and waned during the second penod of folding. The various members of the igneous complex were emplaced synchronously with these metamorphic and tectonic events, and thermal metamorphic effects produced by some members have been superimposed upon those of the regional metamorphism. The earliest intrusion, the Husfjord metagabbro, was emplaced towards the end of the first deformation episode, and has been affected by the highest grades of regional metamorphism. A suite of diontes, monzomtes and quartz-syenites was emplaced during the second deformation episode, and these have only suffered low-grade regional metamorphism. The Husfjord metagabbro and the diorite - monzomte - quartz-syenite complex were emplaced essentially by a mechanism of permissive intrusion. The latest members of the igneous complex were the Vatna gabbro and a number of minor intrusions including perthosite sheets, basic dykes, and nepheline-syenite-pegmatites. The gabbros are thought to have had their genesis in a long-lived mantle diapir in the asthenosphere above a subduction zone dipping eastwards beneath the Baltic plate.

  • REGULERINGSPLAN for SØRVÆR HAVN MED TILHØRENDE DEPONIER Plan ID 9595 Sørvær
