The last two Saturday’s have seen dropped points against Forres Mechanics and Nairn County despite being in control of both matches and in each case surrendering a late equaliser. How did you see both games and do you think that injuries and a busy schedule had an impact on the final scores?

The injuries never really help things but they are part of the game and have to be expected and worked around.

For the Forres game, I do think the fact that we had a game midweek before and Forres didn't had a bearing on It was probably one of the strongest U20's line-up we it, especially in the later stages. We played ok against have had in my time as manager. Bryan Hay and Lewis Forres and got ourselves into a really good position but Davidson both played the full game as they edge nearer unfortunately things didn't work out. I think that a to full fitness. Some of the players played very well couple of key decisions went very much against us. Still indeed. We are excited about quite a few of the fringe now I am baffled as to how Scott Barbour’s goal didn't players. Andrew Hannar can frustrate the life out of you stand to make us go 4-1 up and after watching the with his antics at times but he has something raw about Highland Media clips it looks as if their equaliser was in his play which makes him exciting to watch. If he knuckles down off the park then he could have a very fact offside. Hopefully these sort of things will even themselves out over the course of the season. The Nairn good future in the game. Tyler Chicken was also game was much and such the same although they also excellent on the night. The reports we are getting about had a game the Wednesday before so were in the same him are very good at the moment and it shows in his boat as us. We created a lot of chances and in truth performances. He has had a tough time with injuries but should have scored more than the two we did. Nairn had now looks to be getting his confidence back. If he pushes very few chances and in the end got their draw through himself to be the best he can be then he will also have a a bad mistake from us and then a slice of luck with their bright future. Logan Watt is another player I have high deflected equaliser. All credit to Nairn though as they hopes for. I truly believe he has all the tools required to be a top Highland League player at the very least. We have been one of the best teams we have played this year and will give many teams a problem this term. have said for the last couple of years that he is one to They could be dark horses in the league this season. watch and I have no doubt that he will make it at this level and be a star, if not playing higher. There are a lot Sandwiched between that was a fine 3-0 away win at of others who are on the cusp of the first team, but I a stubborn Lossiemouth side. What pleased you most cannot sit here and praise the young players without about the performance? praising the players who are in the first team at the moment. So far this season we are in a cup final and The most pleasing thing was seeing Bryan Hay get a full undefeated in the league so the players who are in the first team at the moment are performing and therefore 90 minutes and help keep a clean sheet. He missed the majority of pre season as well as our opening couple of it is harder to get these youngsters all in. We have to be months through injury and this game was his first full clever and drip feed them in so we don't burn them out game as he tries to get himself up to speed again. He but at the same time we give them the taste of it to see did well and is a massive part of our squad with the how they react and deal with life as an FFC first team attributes he has. We totally dominated the game and I player. Andrew and Logan are both in the first team can’t recall Paul Leask having to make any saves. I still squad now and are training with the rest of the guys so think we could have moved the ball around the park they are experiencing how the first team operates. They better but to score three away from home and keep a will all get their chances as there are always injuries and suspensions and the like so it will come I have no clean sheet then I have to be happy with that. It was also good to get Ryan Sargent back on the park as he doubt about that. At this moment our first team are recovers from his injury and also Andrew Hannar and doing very well as are our youth players. It all bodes Logan Watt got more minutes. well for now and the future.

The Under 20s had a great result on Monday night Today is a keenly anticipated date in the calendar against Banks O’Dee with a number of fringe players being the first round of the Scottish Cup. How much shining. How close are some of them to breaking into are you looking forward to the game and how difficult the first team XI on a more regular basis? a task do you face against Bonnyrigg Rose given they are top of the Lowland League?

Continued from previous page I always look forward to the Scottish Cup games, for they have given me some of my best moments in football.

There is a special buzz about this competition which isn't all there in the other ones we compete in. Bonnyrigg like ourselves have started very well in the Lowland League. They are an ambitious club who want to go places. We have had them watched and had a few reports on them as all teams seem to do now so hopefully we have done the required preparation, which I am sure they have done on us. It will be a very difficult game and no matter how many times you watch teams or how many reports you get, there is still a bit of the unknown when you play against a team from out with the Highland League. There is no hiding from the fact that the draw could have been nicer to us but we are at home which is something every club hopes for beforehand. We have worked hard all week in training for the build up to this game so hopefully we can apply this to the game and get the required result to get us in the next round, although I have no doubt Bonnyrigg will be feeling the exact same. It should be a very good game with two very good teams for this level. I wish Bonnyrigg Rose all the very best in the future as we make new acquaintances, regardless of the result this afternoon.

Enjoy the game, Mark

Afternoon folks and welcome to the much anticipated Scottish Cup. Over the years we’ve had some fantastic games in the competition so it’s brilliant to be back involved in it again.

The past 2 weeks have been tough ones for the boys, we haven’t been at our best and the midweek games have taken their toll with the amount of injuries we’ve had. At home to Forres the game should have been done and dusted, we let it slip but these things happen and we’ve plenty time to make up for it.

Nairn was much and such the same, we played ok and had enough chances to win 3 games, they had some good possession but didn’t cause us much issues and scored their equaliser with a huge deflection. These things even themselves out over a season so we’ll get ours in the games to come.

Bonnyrigg Rose are a fantastic team and club, we’ve played them previously but not since they’ve been part of the Lowland League, in which they are doing really well. We’ve had a few visits to see them and we are impressed, however today is about us and how we apply ourselves throughout the 90 minutes. If we execute our plan and give our normal 100% I’m confident we’ll be in the draw for the next round.

Hopefully the players, officials and supporters of Bonnyrigg Rose enjoy the visit and have a safe journey.

All the best Boom

Former Glebe Park skipper Ewan linked up with former Brechin City team mates Johnny Brown, Johnny Stewart & Chris Tobin when signing for Bonnyrigg in the summer of 2015. The former Dundee United youth was in his second spell at LTHV and has also turned out for another Conference B side, Tynecastle as well as neighbours Musselburgh Athletic and Whitehill Welfare. Injury hampered his involvement in the side for large spells of last season and will be hoping to have a clearer run in this campaign.

Having played his youth football at Dunfermline Lewis joined local rivals Newtongrange Star. He then rejoined the senior ranks at Berwick Rangers at the end of season 2012/13 but after a short spell he was loaned to Musselburgh Athletic. The day of the Scottish Cup goal deluge

Major upsets in the Scottish Cup are the stuff of legend. You have only to think back to 1959 when Fraserburgh caused shockwaves when they knocked Dundee out of the competition. There were further giant-killing acts in the years to follow when Berwick Rangers dumped the mighty Glasgow Rangers in 1967 and more recently, Stenhousemuir eliminated Aberdeen in 1995.

On September 12, 1885, two extraordinary first-round Scottish Cup-ties became part of football folklore.

Arbroath’s 36-0 rout of Bon-Accord of Aberdeen holds the record for the biggest victory in a senior football match in the world. Less well known is that on the same day, just 18 miles down the road from the Angus town, Harp of Dundee thrashed Aberdeen side Rovers 35 -0. The visiting team mustered only 10 men but it probably made little difference to the outcome.

It’s not surprising that the Aberdeen Journal was rather coy about reporting these humiliating results for local sides in its round-up of the weekend’s sporting programme. The Arbroath debacle merited only two sentences: “Arbroath v Bon-Accord (Aberdeen) – These clubs played their cup-tie at Gayfield, Arbroath. The Aberdeen men received a merciless beating, the register at the close showing the unprecedented tale of 36 goals to nil against them.”

The report of the other cup-tie played at , Dundee, was equally brief although it was something of an understatement to say: “The strangers were seldom or never in the game, the Harp having a walk over.” In stark contrast, readers of the Dundee Advertiser were entertained with full reports of the goal deluge.

Arbroath were formed in 1878 and were rated as one of the strongest provincial sides of the period as football became hugely popular. Bon-Accord had been established in 1884 and, because they didn’t have their own ground, opted to play the cup-tie at even although they had been drawn first out of the hat.

The match kicked off at 3.30pm at a rain-lashed Gayfield which reduced the attendance. It is alleged that some of the Aberdeen team didn’t have railway tickets and jumped from the train into a coal yard as it puffed into Arbroath station. The tone of the Dundee Advertiser’s match report is restrained but perhaps typical of the era: “The Aberdonians kicked off and almost at once the ball was in their territory. A short scrimmage sent the leather out, but on being thrown in it was sent to the strangers’ goal, and Crawford administered the first point. This was the beginning of a very one-sided game. The maroons, working in fine form, had everything their own way – the defence play of the Bon-Accord being unworthy of that name. Goal after goal was notched, and at half-time the score stood – Arbroath 15; Bon-Accord 0.”

There was a stinging rebuke for the Aberdeen side whose performance “was most mediocre, and as regards the individual work there was next to nothing worthy of the least praise”. Arbroath’s players were kitted out in proper football gear unlike Bon-Accord whose team members wore ordinary boots and couldn’t keep their footing on the greasy pitch as the Red Lichties ran rings round them.

The Dundee Courier labelled the game as an “extraordinary farce” and reported that it was so one-sided that

Arbroath goalkeeper Milne “neither touched the ball with hand or foot during the match but remained under the friendly shelter of an umbrella the whole time”. Another account says the goalie also spent some time chatting to a young spectator while sharing a poke of sweets with him. Arbroath’s top scorer was 17-year-old John Petrie who knocked in 13 goals while the other marksmen were Munro (7), Robertson (6), Crawford (6), Marshall (2) and Tackett (2). Seven further “goals” were disallowed for various reasons.

Details about John Petrie’s life have always been sketchy but now we know more about him, thanks to an article by David A. Allan in the Summer 2016 issue of Scottish Football Historian. David says Petrie was a cobbler by trade and joined Arbroath in 1885. He adds that Petrie, who played outside-right, practised in the winter by moonlight as he wanted to perfect kicking a low ball and would make a mark on the Gayfield grandstand and shoot at it using both feet. He also practised shooting at goal from the touchline, the position from which he scored some of his goals in that incredible victory.

During a slump in the shoemaking trade, Petrie moved to and played for local side Distillery during his 11 months there. He returned to Arbroath, where he worked for a local bootmaker, and resumed playing for the Red Lichties before becoming club trainer in 1893 and continued in that role until 1922. Petrie had a short fuse and in his playing days was suspended on a couple of occasions for foul play on the park. His temper landed him in court in 1905 after he was accused of strik ing a fellow-passenger with a knife on a train during a heated argument over football. Petrie was found guilty and was given the option of a £1 fine or 10 days in jail.

Petrie later worked for Arbroath Town Council and it was reported that among his pleasures was blethering about football in the old days and playing his concertina. He died suddenly, while at his work, on July 13, 1932. You won’t find a statue of Petrie at Arbroath but you’re welcome to toast his memory at the 36-0 bar at Gayfield Park, which honours that incredible scoreline from 1885.

MATCH HREPORTIGHLAND LEAGUE – FORRES ROUND MECHANIC UP S

Breedon Scottish , Fraserburgh v Forres Mechanics, Saturday 7th September 2019

An injury hit Broch were pegged back by a spirited Forres side which saw the home side drop their first League points of the season. Despite missing 9 first team players the Broch twice held a two goal lead thanks to Paul Campbell's first half brace and Sean Butcher's counter just after the break which sandwiched Andrew Macrae's first for the visitors. However two goals in the last 20 minutes from Andrew Macrae and Aaron Hamilton saw Forres pick up an unlikely point.

The Broch made one enforced change from Wednesday night's triumphant exertions at with Bryan Hay coming in for his first start of the season to replace the suspended Michael Rae. This meant Jamie Beagrie was pushed forward into a central midfield position to allow Bryan Hay to take up his normal position at the heart of the defence.

The visitors started the game on the front foot with Andrew Macrae seeing his shot on the turn from the edge of the box comfortably saved by Paul Leask. On six minutes the ball was worked inside to Jordan Milne but his low drive was off target. Four minutes later Aaron Hamilton headed wide from a good position. The Broch finally worked their way into the game and on 20 minutes Greg Buchan fed Scott Barbour at the edge of the box and he drove wide to the left side of the area before firing a low shot across the keeper but just wide of the far post. A minute later the Broch took the lead when

Paul Campbell's looping shot drifted into the top corner. On 25 minutes Scott Barbour and Sean Butcher combined to set up Paul Campbell but as he took a touch into the penalty area the ball just ran away from him into the grateful arms of

Stuart Knight in the visitor’s goal.

On the half hour another good move on the left involving Greg Buchan, Sean Butcher and Paul Campbell ended with a cross to the back post which was met by William West but his shot was deflected wide. A minute later a short corner by

Greg Buchan to Scott Barbour saw the initial cross blocked but Bryan Hay retrieved possession and laid it off to Paul

Campbell who hammered a raking drive high past Stuart Knight into the net to double the Broch's lead. Forres pulled one back on 34 minutes when Jordan Milne's slide rule pass allowed Andrew Macrae to poke the ball past the onrushing Paul Leask. The Broch goal had an amazing escape on 36 minutes when Andrew Macrae wriggled free inside the area and saw his first effort saved by Paul Leask, the ball broke back to the Forres and he teed up Aaron Hamilton who thought he had levelled the score only to see William West pop up to head his net bound effort off the line.

Half Time: Fraserburgh 2 Forres Mechanics 1

The Broch restored their two goal lead seven minutes after the break when Sean Butcher was on hand to side foot the ball home from close range. A minute later and they thought they had stretched their lead further when Sean Butcher saw his initial effort blocked but as the ball broke towards the by-line he was able to cross it into the six yard box for Scott Barbour to sweep the ball home. Much to the home side's anger the stand side assistant raised his flag to indicate offside against the Broch striker. It was Forres' turn to direct their ire at the far side assistant on 58 minutes when the ball broke fortuitously to Aaron Hamilton off Andrew Macrae and he curl ed the ball past Paul Leask into the bottom corner only to see the flag raised for offside. Amazingly the home side had another goal chalked off a minute later when Greg Buchan pulled the ball back to Paul Campbell whose shanked shot fell to the feet of Scott Barbour who forced the ball home again from an offside position.

Just after the hour Paul Campbell's cross into the Forres penalty area was only half cleared and Paul Young nodded the ball back to Sean Butcher who flicked the ball just over the cross bar. On 66 minutes Greg Buchan crossed to the back post from the right but Scott Barbour could only head the ball against the post from a difficult angle. It was to prove a turning point as five minutes later a poor kick out by Paul Leask was latched onto by Jordan Milne who played in Andrew Macrae and he rounded the Broch keeper to roll the ball into an empty net. The home side made a couple of substitutions on 75 minutes and a minute later one of them, Luke Barbour saw his 25 yarder well saved by Stuart Knight. On 82 minutes Scott Barbour crossed for Paul Campbell but his shot was deflected wide. Forres equalised with three minutes remaining when Simon Allan swung in a cross and Aaron Hamilton got ahead of his marker to thump a header past Paul Leask.

Breedon Scottish Highland Football League, Lossiemouth v Fraserburgh, Wednesday 11th September 2019

With this being their fourth game in eleven days Mark Cowie freshened things up from the 3-3 draw against Forres Mechanics with Lewis Davidson, Michael Rae & Luke Barbour all returning to the starting line up and Owen Cairns, Sean Butcher & Kieran Simpson dropping to the bench. There was also a place for Ryan Sargent for the first time this season.

The Broch got off to the perfect start with barely 20 seconds on the clock when Lewis Davidson and Scott Barbour combined on the left and when the ball ricocheted into the path of Greg Buchan he was able to stab the ball past Stewart Black in the Lossiemouth goal. On 12 minutes Jamie Beagrie fired a great diagonal pass out to Paul Campbell on the right and he drove along the by-line before firing an inviting cross into the Lossiemouth six yard area just out of the reach of Greg Buchan.

Two minutes later Luke Barbour played the ball back to William West but the Broch captain saw his effort always rising over the crossbar. On 16 minutes Greg Buchan pulled a corner back to the edge of the box and

Jamie Beagrie's half volley went just wide of the far post. Midway through the first half the ball broke to Ryan

Stuart at the edge of the visitor's penalty area but his shot went well wide. On 27 minutes Paul Young found Scott Barbour with a ball forward and the Broch striker drove past two Lossiemouth defenders before firing an effort across the home keeper which went just wide.

Two minutes later a free kick was only half cleared by the Broch defence but once again Ryan Stuart's effort was off target going just over the crossbar. The Broch were looking for a second goal and nearly got it on 37 minutes when Paul Young crossed to the back post but William West headed wide. Just before the break Lewis Davidson's marauding run on the right saw him pull the ball back to Paul Campbell but the in form striker swept his effort high over the bar.

Half Time: Lossiemouth 0 Fraserburgh 1

The second half was nine minutes old when Michael Rae played the ball forward to Scott Barbour in behind the Lossiemouth defence and he ran on into the penalty area before slotting the ball between Stewart Black's legs and into the far corner of the net to double the Broch's lead. The Black & Whites striker should had added another on 62 minutes after a misjudgement in the home defence saw him through on goal but the Lossiemouth keeper did well to save with his legs.

Four minutes later Greg Buchan's corner from the right was met by Jamie Beagrie but once again Stewart Black was in the right place to save. On 71 minutes Michael Rae played the ball out to substitute Ryan Sargent who crossed from the left which was only half cleared and Rae saw his thundering effort fly just over.

Three minutes after that let off Lossie got lucky again when William West played the ball into Scott Barbour inside the home penalty area but his shot crept just wide of the post. With three minutes remaining Scott Barbour and Andrew Hannar combined outside the area to set up Paul Campbell and he drilled the ball past Stewart Black at his near post to make the final score 3-0 to the Broch.

HIGHLANDALFIE’S LEAGUE ANGLE STATS – MEET SEASON DAVE EDWARDS 2019-20

What is your career background and how did you get into football reporting?

After 10 years in the Clydesdale Bank, starting in my home town of Rothes, Elgin and latterly Harbour Branch, Aberdeen, I joined the Leicester Building Society in Aberdeen, thereafter moved to Glasgow before going on to manage branches in Helensburgh, Banff, Turriff, Wick, Thurso, Forres, Elgin & Buckie before I was made redundant after 17 years with what became the Alliance & Leicester. After a year of out of a job I applied to join the P & J as a sports reporter, as for a hobby I had done 12 years of football reporting on Firth Radio in , and 23 years later I still work for the Press and Journal in Elgin covering sport.

Did you play football (or any other sport) as a youngster? I signed for Elgin City on an 'S' form in 1970 and spent 2 years as understudy to first choice goalkeeper, Dave Lawtie. In 1972 I made my debut in goal for Rothes in a 2-0 defeat at Recreation Park on a cold wet Tuesday night, both Blue Toon goals, were scored by a 17-year-old on-loan centre forward with black curly called . I was also capped against Wales and England under-18 schoolboys in 1971, we beat Wales 3-2 down there, and in front of 18,000 fans at in Airdrie, I didn't let in a goal against the 'Auld Enemy; as we drew 0-0.

Did you/do you have a favourite football team (Highland League or Senior club)? My favourite team has to be my home town team Rothes. My first ever memory was seeing Rothes centre forward 'King' Willie Grant and captain Tommy Martin holding the Highland League championship trophy aloft on the steps of the Drill Hall, when I was just 5-years-old. When I was 10 my great uncle Geordie was the groundsman at Mackessack Park and he used to give me sixpence for putting up the nets, lining the pitch, polishing the boots and washing out the dressing rooms - all he had to do was cut the grass (and the council did that for him). Six months later the committee appointed me assistant-grounsdsman and I was paid half a crown a week!

How do you rate the standard of Highland League football and has it changed over the years? It is extremely difficult to compare the game now with when I played, it's like comparing apples with pears, everything is different, most especially the equipment, football boots these days are more like slippers, whereas I used to struggle to get a wet ball out of the box from a goal kick, it was like kicking a stone compared to the modern-day balls. I think the biggest change is that the great characters have gone, the last real one being a legendary figure here at Bellslea, Charlie Duncan.

Do you think the Highland League is weaker with the loss of Inverness Caledonian, Inverness Thistle, Ross County, Elgin City, Peterhead and now Cove Rangers? It has to be, you can't take quality clubs such as those out of the Highland League and not see a difference, having said that, especially this season, I honestly feel that every club is capable of beating any other in our league, that hasn't been the case for quite some time.

What makes the Highland League so special? It's simple - the Highland League is like one big family!

Can you recall your most memorable Highland League matches over the years? One match stands out, an Aberdeenshire Cup or perhaps Shield final at Allan Park involving Peterhead and Fraserburgh more than two decades ago - if I remember correctly the Broch were down 3-0 with about quarter of an hour to go, but fought back to level at 3-3 and take the game into extra-time. Fraserburgh went on to win 6-3 in considerable style. One other readily springs into mind, at Mackessack Park one night, Rothes were 5-1 down to Deveronvale with 20 minutes to go, amazingly the Speysiders made a tremendous comeback to win 6-5.

Bonnyrigg Rose are the visitors to the Bellslea today, do you have any knowledge of the ‘Rosy Posy’ or of Junior football in general? A club with a great 'junior history' having won the Scottish Junior Cup on two occasions - currently leaders of the Lowland League.

What do you think of refereeing standards in the Highland League? Again, I don't think there are any real characters left in the refereeing ranks in north football today compared to when I was a boy, perhaps the presence of the supervisor in the stand has much to do with that.

Have any managers or players objected to your match reports? Not many, although I have had my ups-and-downs with a couple over the last three decades who felt that I shouldn't speculate, funny that, as in reality, much of my job is about just that.

What do you think of VAR? Personally, I don't particularly like it, the spontaneity appears to have been taken out of the game, I would prefer if decisions, similar to the way it works in both codes of rugby and in cricket, were not taken by the on-field official, but by an adjudicator watching in the stands.

Any funny stories over the years? Rothes v Deveronvale in the early 60's - Rothes 6ft 7in centre forward Ally MacRae went up for a corner kick but as he rose into the air legendary Vale keeper, former Aberdeen & Scotland under-23 international Reggie Morrison pulled MacRae's shorts down. Everybody fell about laughing, including Elgin-based referee Gordon Shanks, who immediately signalled for the corner kick to be retaken.

Who have been your favourite Highland League players (past or present)? T o name but three - 'King Willie' Grant, when he played for Rothes, and not Elgin City - the best header of a ball I've ever seen; winger George Gilbert of Elgin City, the best left-sided player I've ever seen; the aforementioned Charlie

Duncan, a wonderfully gifted footballer with Peterhead, Buckie Thistle and of course Fraserburgh!

Elgin City were ‘stripped’ of the Highland League title they won in season 1992/1993, do you have an opinion of that?

I still think that the punishment far outweighed the crime, I believe that Elgin should have been deducted three points and handed a heavy fine, for the title not to have been awarded in the Highland League's centenary season was wrong - as was taking the medals back from City players less than a week later, for some it was the only medal they ever won!

Which Broch players have impressed you over the years? ANSWER - Apart from the redoubtable Charlie Duncan, how about Davie Robertson, Ian 'Molby' Murray, his brother

Scott Murray, now kit-man at the club he graced for more than a decade, Bristol City, Marino Keith and his brother Paul 'PK' Keith, not to forget the club’s all-time record appearance holder, legendary keeper Billy Gordon.

What do you think of the current Scottish national team and do you think will be a success as manager? Extremely disappointed, I honestly don't think it could get much worse, and in the end I do believe that Steve Clarke will get it right and build a good side.

What do you think about the recent changes to the Laws of the Game at the start of the season and are there any other changes you’d like to see? I think the laws were fine as they were before tinkering at the start of this term - but the thing which really does annoy me is the way clubs run down the clock in the latter stages of a game, taking the ball to the corner flag and the like.

What is your biggest ‘gripe’ in modern football today?

P layers rolling about in agony, it has t be said mostly foreign, as if they'd been shot after being tackled.

Do you have any ambitions to realize?

Only one, to see Rothes repeat their championship success of season 1958-59.

Do you think the current Pyramid System in Scotland could potentially de-value or weaken the Highland League if the champions each season succeed in the Play Offs?

I don't think so - potentially our ranks could even swell at the end of this season with Brechin City many people's favourites to finish bottom of League 2.
