The incidence of children being diagnosed with all forms of cancer has been accelerating at a Interview with Anita consistent rate of 0.6% annually since the mid-70's, with an overall increase of more than 20% over Barker 2 the last 35 years. New diagnoses continue to inch upward each year. According to the National Cancer Institute, in 2014 nearly 16,000 American children and adolescents are expected to be 46th Program in diagnosed with some form of cancer. Washington, D.C. 3 The diagnosis of cancer for these brave young people is a life altering event for them as well as their families. When I reflect on my son’s childhood cancer diagnosis and his enormous physical Donations 4 suffering, I am pained to think about the inescapable trauma he endured in order to live. Our family life was replaced with emergency hospitalizations, four years of hospital visits, medical jargon, endless medications and painful, painful procedures. A Special Thank You 7 We don’t have a crystal ball to know whether childhood cancer rates will ever decrease, but for now the Treasure Chest Foundation is there for the kids when they need it most. We are the only charity Becca Mueller’s on the front line when a child walks through the doors of a Children’s Cancer Treatment Center. The Inspiring Bravery 7 Treasure Chest Foundation provides comfort and distraction on a regular basis, not just during the holidays or for a birthday, but every day whenever little ones enter the doors of a hospital while undergoing treatment for cancer. Community Kindness 8 Throughout our 17 years we’ve never wavered from our goal of putting smiles on the faces of brave young cancer patients. In the six years since the great recession that began in 2008, we’ve managed Birthdays and to add more than 3,100 children and teens to our monthly average level of service. Today our Volunteers 9 48 Treasure Chest Programs spread across 17 states and the District of Columbia now serve more than 9,000 young cancer patients each month. We’ve been blessed with the support of hundreds of loyal donors like you Toy Drives 10 who’ve made it possible to move into our new headquarters and to continue pursuing our dream of one day serving EVERY childhood cancer patient across the nation. Summer 2014 Page 3 Treasure Chest Foundation Opens 46th Program in Washington, D.C. The Treasure Chest Foundation opened its 46th Treasure Chest Program at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. This Treasure Chest Program was established in honor of Crofton Kelly, the 17-year-old LaGrange, Illinois resident who has organized and coordinated a community Tennis Fun Fest at the Hinsdale Racquet Club for the past eight years running. Crofton’s amazing efforts have now brought in more than $25,000, making him a true hero for the legions of brave young cancer patients whose lives he has enhanced. Crofton Kelly shared these reactions after attending the 46th Treasure Chest Program opening: “A big thanks to all for your support of our Tennis Fun Fest event over the years. The Treasure Chest Foundation opened up a new site at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. in the Tennis Fun Fest’s honor because of all the money raised by this event. It was a very exciting and unbelievable experience! I saw for myself how much this organization means to the patients and staff at the hospitals. After their treatments, which can be so hard, the kids were really excited to be able to choose their toys. Thank you for being a crucial part of it!”

Crofton Kelly of LaGrange Alison Kelly (pictured here with husband Jim and Becky smiles with joy because (second from left) is joined by three brave son Crofton) said, “It was so amazing to see the of all the brand new toys that young cancer patients in celebrating the kids dive into the Treasure Chest and be so will be there to comfort her. opening of the 46thTreasure Chest Program. excited about selecting their toys. These children and this new community are both better because of the Treasure Chest Foundation.”

Organizer Crofton Kelly and Hinsdale Racquet Club pro Tom Cahill (center, front row) share a high-five while celebrating the 8th Annual Tennis Fun Fest’s rousing success that raised over $5,000.

Every day, at Children’s Cancer Treatment Centers across the nation, stories of incredible bravery unfold as childhood cancer patients and their families deal with painful treatments on an ongoing basis. One such typical example concerns our recent Sport-A-Palooza Fundraiser Honorary Chairperson, Becca Mueller of La Grange, IL. Her story, as told by her mother Barb, reflects the strength of the human spirit, the power of a positive attitude, and the potential positive impact our Foundation can have on brave young cancer patients. Our daughter Becca was diagnosed in August, 2010 with Biphenotypic Leukemia at age seven, and she is now eleven years old. She was initially placed in a high risk category due to her longer time responding to treatment. Becca was hospitalized many times, once for more than three months. Becca has endured more than 25 blood transfusions and 50 platelet infusions in addition to two weeks of cranial radiation and three stays in intensive care due to treatment complications. Throughout her medical journey, Becca’s positive attitude has never wavered, and the Treasure Chest has helped her every step of the way. She has never caused a problem when going for treatment because being able to select a toy from the Treasure Chest has helped her to see a light at the end of the tunnel. From a parent’s perspective, the Treasure Chest Foundation helped us move forward with Becca Mueller (age 9, Becca (now age 11) shows circa 2012) chooses a toy the prize she selected from Becca’s treatment. Volunteers Matter Danny Thomas once said, “Success in life has nothing to do with what you gain in life or accomplish for yourself. It’s what you do for others.”

The Treasure Chest Foundation has been blessed with thousands volunteers who work tirelessly. Our volunteers will always be silent heroes in the lives of the children and teens the Treasure Chest foundation serves.

Thanks for helping us secure toy deliveries for the year 2013-2014. Several local schools, churches, businesses and communities hosted Holiday Toy Drives which resulted in an enormous total donation of more than 100,000 toys.

Each year we are amazed by the fact that these generous individuals and organizations, all located within close proximity to our Orland Park headquarters, are able to provide enough toys to directly benefit children and teens at 48 Children’s Cancer Treatment Centers across the nation. We would like to convey once again our personal thanks and deep sense of gratitude to you.

On behalf of the children and teens who have been diagnosed with cancer, the Treasure Chest Foundation Board of Directors and staff wish to thank you for your tremendous response. We truly feel blessed to have such support.
