A lot of activities that have been carried out by Muhammadiyah as a socio- religious movement based on tauhid ( aqidah Islamiyah) through Islamic purification (tajrid) and in the other sides through modernity (tajdid) that’s puts forward enjoining whats is right and forbidding whats is wrong (amar ma’ruf nahi mungkar) as a theological bases (teologi al-ma’un). Have a lot of evidences shown in Muhammadiyah socio- religious movement in Indonesia, but the biggest challages is the ability to maintain the existence of and answered a range of challenges that are local and global (relations between islam and democration), pluralism, human rights and the marginals. Through tajdid Muhammadiyah has proven ability in respond of Islamic problems in Indonesia since before the independence of up to the twenty-first century.in a way to do interpretation of his base theologious through a shift paradigm in theologies and socio- religious movement (Thomas Kuhn). In fact, Muhammadiyah move forward with transformation of theological bases from theocentris to antrophocentris (Hasan Hanafi).Thus various issues on religious movement,political like nation-state wich is local or global had answered by Muhammadiyah with his theological bases and the charity efforts like educations, hospitals and the orphanage. -

NASIONALISME ISLAM: TELAAH PEMIKIRAN DAN KIPRAH HADJI AGUS SALIM Novizal Wendry [email protected] Dosen Jurusan Syariah STAIN Padangsidimpuan Abstrak Hadji Agus Salim adalah salah seorang tokoh nasionalis Islam yang hidup dalam tiga zaman, Belanda, Jepang, dan awal kemerdekaan. Pemikiran nasionalisme Islam Salim dipengaruhi oleh pendidikan sekuler Belanda dan interaksinya dengan tokoh pembaharu lintas Negara seperti Jamaluddin al-Afgani dan karya-karya tokoh pembaharu Negara lainnya ketika ia menjadi penerjemah pada konsulat Belanda di Jeddah tahun 1906. Nasionalisme Islam yang digusung oleh Salim berkeinginan untuk memperjuangkan hak-hak kemerdekaan yang telah dirampas oleh Pemerintah Hindia Belanda berdasarkan asas-asas Islam. Nasionalisme Islam ini berbeda dengan nasionalisme sekuler yang digusung oleh Soekarno dan Hatta, karena memisahkan antara nasionalisme dengan agama. Haji Agus Salim is one of Islamic nationalist leaders who lived in three regimes; the Netherlands, Japan, and early Indonesian independence. Salim’s thought was influenced by the Dutch secular education and his interaction with transnational reformers like Jamaluddin al-Afgani and the works of other reformers when he became a translator at the Dutch consulate in Jeddah in 1906. Islamic Nationalism formulated by Salim wanted to fight the rights of freedom that has been seized by the Dutch government based on Islamic principles. Islamic nationalism was different from secular nationalism formulated by Sukarno and Hatta, when the second separated between nationalism and religion. Prophetic social sciences: toward an Islamic-based transformative social sciences Pradana Boy ZTF Department of Malay Studies, National University of Singapore; and Faculty of Islamic Studies, Muhammadiyah University of Malang E-mail: [email protected] Abstract This article discusses of one of the most important type of social sciences devel- oped in Indonesian context. In the midst of debate between Western secular social sciences and Islamic social sciences, Kuntowijoyo offered a genuine yet critical formula of social sciences. The formula called Ilmu Sosial Profetik (ISP) attempted to build a bridge between secular social science and Islamic inclina- tion of social science. This article describes the position of ISP in the context of critical position of Muslim social scientists on the hegemony and domination of Orientalist tendency in studying Islam. At the end, the author offers a conclusion that ISP can actually be regarded as Islamic-based transformative science that can be further developed for a genuine indigenous theory of social sciences from the Third World. Artikel ini membahas salah satu tipe paling penting dari ilmu-ilmu sosial yang dikembangkan dalam konteks Indonesia. Di tengah perdebatan antara ilmu-ilmu sosial Barat sekuler dan ilmu social Islam, Kuntowijoyo menawarkan formula yang orisinal dan kritis dalam ilmu sosial. Formula yang kemudian disebut dengan Ilmu Sosial Profetik (ISP) berusaha untuk membangun jembatan antara ilmu 95 IJIMS, Indonesian Journal of Islam and Muslim Societies, Volume 1, Number 1, June 2011: 95-121 sosial sekuler dan kecenderungan untuk melakukan Islamisasi ilmu sosial. Pemerintah Kolonial Belanda tidaklah seberhasil pemerintah kolonial Spanyol dalam menjadikan jajahan mereka menjadi bangsa seperti mereka, meskipun agama digunakan sebagai alat dominasi. Bagi Spanyol, agama Katolik menjadi bagian peradaban mereka, dan menjadi bagian penting proyek kolonialisme mereka, sedangkan bagi pemerintah kolonial Belanda, agama Kristen tidak menjadi bagian penting kolonialisme mereka (kenyataan sejarah yang menolak anggapan umum di Indonesia bahwa kolonialisme Belanda dan kristenisasi sangat berhubungan). ARTICLE RELIGIOUS FREEDOM IMPLICATIONS OF SHARIA IMPLEMENTATION IN ACEH, INDONESIA ASMA T. UDDIN* INTRODUCTION On Monday, September 14, 2009, the provincial legislature in Aceh, Indonesia passed Sharia regulations imposing stringent criminal punish- ments for various sexual offenses, such as adultery and fornication.1 Sharia, literally meaning “way to a watering place,” is a set of divine principles that regulate a Muslim’s relationship with God and man by providing social, moral, religious, and legal guidance. It is implemented through fiqh, or Is- lamic jurisprudence, which is the science of interpreting religious texts in order to deduce legal rulings. The Acehnese Sharia regulations are the latest manifestations of a process of formal implementation of Sharia that began in 2002 in Aceh.2 Given the gravity of the associated punishments, the reg- ulations have caught national and international attention, with human rights activists across the world decrying the severity of the corporal punishments imposed by the regulations. Much less frequently scrutinized are the regula- tions’ implications for other human rights—such as religious freedom. This paper analyzes these regulations’ religious freedom implications for both Muslims and non-Muslims. -

THE DISCOURSE OF MUSLIM INTELLECTUALS AND `ULAMA’> IN INDONESIA A Historical Overview Khoirun Niam IAIN Sunan Ampel, Surabaya - Indonesia Abstract: Muslim intellectuals and `ulama’> are two notions necessary for attempts to get deep understanding of particularly Indonesian Muslim scholars. This paper analyses the discourse of Muslim intellectuals and `ulama’> in Indonesia before the independence period. The focus is on the practices and vectors which paved the way for the Muslim intellectuals and `ulama’> to come to the forefront in socio-political and cultural arena of Indonesia. The paper argues that the emergence of Indonesian intellectuals was not only influenced by Muslim organisations but also by Study Clubs. It further argues that irrespective of the diverse identification of Muslims intellectuals, those with secular educational background dominated the public spehere of Indonesia in the pre-independence period than those trained in pesantren or traditional Islamic education. This codition was a result of the nexus of the colonial contribution through so-called ethical policy, the rise of socio-political and cultural association, and the emergence of study club, which gave rise to Muslim intellectuals with secular educational background. Suaidi Asyari A REAL THREAT FROM WITHIN: Muhammadiyah’s Identity Metamorphosis and the Dilemma of Democracy Suaidi Asyari IAIN Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin - Jambi Abstract: This paper will look at Muhammadiyah as a constantly metamorphosing organism from which have grown modernist-reformist, liberalist progressive, political pragmatist and potentially violent fundamentalist-radical Muslims. It will argue that the trajectory passed by and the victory of the radical-puritan element in the National Congress 2005 can potentially become an obstacle for Muhammadiyah's involvement in the process of implementing democratic values in Indonesia in the future. To keep watching Muhammadiyah’s trajectory is crucially important due to the fact that this organization is one of the powerful forces in the world toward the democratization process. In order to be on the right track of democracy, Muhammadiyah has to be able to cope with its internal disputes over democratic values. Only by means of coping with these internal disputes can this organization ensure its role in propagating and disseminating democratic ideas as well as practices in Indonesia. 1 Secularization of religion in Indonesia: From Custom to Pancasila and back to adat Stephen C. Headley (CNRS) [Version 3 Nov., 2008] Introduction: Why would anyone want to promote or accept a move to normalization of religion? Why are village rituals considered superstition while Islam is not? What is dangerous about such cultic diversity? These are the basic questions which we are asking in this paper. After independence in 1949, the standardization of religion in the Republic of Indonesia was animated by a preoccupation with “unity in diversity”. All citizens were to be monotheists, for monotheism reflected more perfectly the unity of the new republic than did the great variety of cosmologies deployed in the animistic cults. Initially the legal term secularization in European countries (i.e., England and France circa 1600-1800) meant confiscations of church property. Only later in sociology of religion did the word secularization come to designate lesser attendance to church services. It also involved a deep shift in the epistemological framework. It redefined what it meant to be a person (Milbank, 1990). Anthropology in societies where religion and the state are separate is very different than an anthropology where the rulers and the religion agree about man’s destiny. This means that in each distinct cultural secularization will take a different form depending on the anthropology conveyed by its historically dominant religion expression. For example, the French republic has no cosmology referring to heaven and earth; its genealogical amnesia concerning the Christian origins of the Merovingian and Carolingian kingdoms is deliberate for, the universality of the values of the republic were to liberate its citizens from public obedience to Catholicism. -

Dalam aksinya, mereka membunuh banyak orang, merugikan harta benda, serta membuat kerusakan infrastruktur dari wilayah kekuasaannya di Timur Tengah sampai dengan Asia Tenggara. Kabar kekerasan ISIS terdengar melalui media massa, dari internet, dalam artikel berita, dan didiskusikan di media sosial. Namun, dengan segala informasi mengenai kekejaman ISIS, mengapa masih ada orang Indonesia yang mendukung ISIS? Apa yang membuat mereka membenci orang-orang kafir? Apa yang memotivasi mereka untuk berjuang demi ISIS, bahkan sampai rela untuk kehilangan nyawa? Penelitian ini, dengan mengaplikasikan teori konstruktivisme, mendiskusikan kisah sejarah Indonesia dan faktor sosial yang mendasari alasan orang Indonesia mendukung ISIS. Dengan metode penelitian kualitatif, data dikumpulkan melalui interview dan studi literatur dari buku dan artikel penelitian. Peneliti mendiskusikan total 6 (enam) faktor pendorong dan penarik, mulai dari kisah sejarah, radikalisme di Tanah Air, kecendrungan orang Muslim di Indonesia, dan generasi milenial.
