OLIVER CROMWELL AND THE REGICIDES By Dr Patrick Little The revengers’ tragedy known as the Restoration can be seen as a drama in four acts. The first, third and fourth acts were in the form of executions of those held responsible for the ‘regicide’ – the killing of King Charles I on 30 January 1649. Through October 1660 ten regicides were hanged, drawn and quartered, including Charles I’s prosecutor, John Cooke, republicans such as Thomas Scot, and religious radicals such as Thomas Harrison. In April 1662 three more regicides, recently kidnapped in the Low Countries, were also dragged to Tower Hill: John Okey, Miles Corbett and John Barkstead. And in June 1662 parliament finally got its way when the arch-republican (but not strictly a regicide, as he refused to be involved in the trial of the king) Sir Henry Vane the younger was also executed. In this paper I shall consider the careers of three of these regicides, one each from these three sets of executions: Thomas Harrison, John Okey and Sir Henry Vane. What united these men was not their political views – as we shall see, they differed greatly in that respect – but their close association with the concept of the ‘Good Old Cause’ and their close friendship with the most controversial regicide of them all: Oliver Cromwell. The Good Old Cause was a rallying cry rather than a political theory, embodying the idea that the civil wars and the revolution were in pursuit of religious and civil liberty, and that they had been sanctioned – and victory obtained – by God. -

The Restoration of Charles II Stuart in 1660 was reckoned in post-revolutionary England both in terms of a long-awaited relief and an inevitable menace. The return of the exiled prince, whose father’s disgraceful decapitation in the name of law eleven years earlier marked the end of the British monarchy, must have been looked forward to by those who expected rewards for their loyalty, inflexibility and royal affiliation in the turbulent times of the Inter- regnum. It must have been, however, feared by those who directly contributed to issuing the death warrant on the legally ruling king and to violating the irrefutable divine right of kings. Even though Charles II’s mercy was widely known, hardly anyone expected that the restored monarch’s inborn mildness would win over his well-grounded will to revenge his father’s death and the collapse of the British monarchy. It seems that Charles II was not exception- ally vindictive and was eager to show mercy and oblivion understood as an act of amnesty to those who sided with Cromwell and Parliament but did not contribute directly to the executioner raising his axe over the royal neck. On the other hand, the country’s unstable situation and the King’s newly-built reputation required some firm-handed actions taken by the sovereign in order to prevent further rebellions or plots in the future, and to strengthen the posi- tion of the monarchy so shattered by the Civil War and the Interregnum. -

John Godwin, UoB The Restoration and its Impact on Bristol September 2017 John Godwin, ‘The Restoration and its impact on Bristol’ (University of Bristol, draft PhD chapter, 2017)1 Bristol suffered considerably during the Civil War, enduring two sieges followed by two occupations, first by the crown forces, then the parliamentary army, which in September 1645 marched into a city suffering from a lack of food and with the plague raging. During the 1650s Bristol was a city under military occupation. Although most of the citizens were Anglican, there was a large dissenting population, including Presbyterians, Baptists, Anabaptists, Fifth Monarchists and Quakers. By the 1650s some of these had been absorbed into the leadership of the city, particularly the Presbyterians and Anabaptists who became influential members of the city council. The council itself was run by a small group of oligarchs, mostly merchants, who were self-appointing and, once appointed, normally served for life. Change was therefore slow except when particular groups came to dominate. As will be seen, that did not happen often. Indeed, major changes only occurred when two circumstances coincided; pressure from the king or parliament was needed and this had to occur at a point when a dominant local figure was willing to provide a lead. That happened less often than might be expected. Despite their wealth, civic leaders still largely lived cheek by jowl with the ordinary citizens. They plied their politics alongside the guilds and parishes and the numerous citizens involved with them. There was considerable pressure to move forwards by consensus. Oliver Cromwell died on 3 September 1658. -

It argues that antinomians, by rejecting traditional concepts of social authority, created divisive political factions within the godly party while it waged war against King Charles I. At the same time in New England, antinomians organized a political movement that called for a democratic commonwealth to limit the power of ministers and magistrates in religious and civil affairs. When this program collapsed in Massachusetts, hundreds of colonists returned to an Old England engulfed by civil war. Joining English antinomians, they became lay preachers in London, New Model Army soldiers, and influential supporters of the republican Levellers. This dissertation also connects the study of republican political thought to the labor history of the first British Empire. -
From Republic to Restoration
1 Introduction: from Republic to Restoration Janet Clare ROM Republic to Restoration brings together the work of historians, lit- F erary scholars, cultural and music historians with a shared interest in the crossing of the common period boundary of 1660. While recent, more inclusive studies of the seventeenth century have dislodged 1660 as a rigid historiographical divide, relatively few critics have examined the continuum of Republic to Restoration, investigating the features of the Restoration in the context of the legacies, traumas and achievements of the Republic.1 On one level, such a historiographical treatment of the seventeenth century may be seen as an acceptance of the political discourse which accompanied the return of kingship in 1660, mirroring the Restoration’s repudiation or casting into oblivion the entire social order preceding it. Charles II dated his reign from 1649 and ignored the so- called Interregnum in his regnal years calculation. But, as C. V. Wedgwood argued over half a century ago, ‘the problems and achievements of the Restoration epoch, including Parliament, the Church, social or economic history, literature, the arts and the sciences have their beginnings in the earlier period’. 2 Historians and scholars of theatre, drama and the arts who end or begin their work at the Restoration can obscure continuities between the fi rst and second halves of the seventeenth century. As chapters in this volume illustrate, reconstruc- tion of the old order did not mend the political, religious and cultural divisions that had opened up during the civil wars. Nor did the political experiments and the artistic and scientifi c achievements of the 1650s fail to leave an imprint on the rest of the century. -

MYSTICAL EXPERIENCE AND THE FIFTH MONARCHY WOMEN: ANNA TRAPNEL, SARAH WIGHT, ELIZABETH AVERY, AND MARY CARY LORRAINE McNEIL A Thesis submitted for the degree of Ph. D in the Department of English Literary and Linguistic Studies at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne October 2001 NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY 201097472 ABSTRACT This thesis focuses on mystical experience and the writings of Anna Trapnel and other women associated with the Fifth Monarchy movement, Sarah Wight, Mary Cary, and Elizabeth Avery. Female visionary experience is particularly associated with the High to Late Middle Ages, yet there is a recurrence of it in the mid-seventeenth century, exemplified by the Fifth Monarchy women. One of the aims of this thesis is to determine how far the mystical discourse of medieval writers such as Hildegard of Bingen, Julian of Norwich, and St. Bridget, penetrates the writing of women associated with the Fifth Monarchists. To this end it participates in the critical debate surrounding the possibility of a tradition of female prophecy. A general residue of medieval mystical texts in England in the seventeenth century suggests cross-cultural influences, yet the recurrence of medieval aspects of mysticism in the writing of women visionaries has been seen as little more than coincidence. In order to develop the idea that there are more deliberate reasons for this recurrence, I will examine the ideological beliefs of the Fifth Monarchy movement, analysing in particular the ways in which these beliefs were expressed, as well as considering the impact of seventeenth-century editions of medieval mystical texts on the visionary writers of this movement. -

Copyright © 1984 History Today Ltd, London. Those living through the period 1570–1640 would have felt themselves much closer to civil war in the first two decades than in the last two. A disputed succession, organised Catholic and Puritan religious parties (in the Catholic case made the more menacing by a strong advocacy of tyrannicide), and the willingness of foreign powers to intervene in the internal affairs of England: all these were far more the hallmarks of the mid-Elizabethan than of the Caroline period. Yet these were the classic occasions of internal conflict in Reformation Europe. They were the major but not the only signs of a country moving away from civil war. The Crown had weathered the storm induced by a century of popula- tion growth and price inflation. By the 1630s, both these were blowing themselves out; the economic and social outlook were rosier. The Crown doubled its real income between 1603 and 1637 and had the lowest national debt in Europe. Although the methods used were unpopular and provoked some limited passive resistance, the Crown got its way. In the later 1630s only one fiscal device – Ship Money – was openly (and largely ineffectually) resisted, and the Crown could have abandoned it and still balanced the budget in peacetime. Since no foreign power in the foreseeable future would declare war on England, the Crown had another twenty years in what would have been a favourable economic climate to solve the problems of war finance. -

OLIVER CROMWELL AND THE PRINT CULTURE OF THE INTERREGNUM by BENJAMIN WOODFORD A thesis submitted to the Department of History in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada September, 2007 Copyright © Benjamin Woodford, 2007 i Abstract When the second Protectoral Parliament offered the crown to Oliver Cromwell, he, despite his conservative impulses, rejected it. Why would a man who believed in the ancient constitution and hoped to stabilize the British Isles turn down a traditional title that had the potential to unify the nation? The answer partly lies within the numerous political tracts that were printed in the 1650s. The kingship crisis sparked the creation of many pamphlets and petitions that sought to sway Cromwell one way or the other. Three prominent groups that wrote regarding the possibility of King Oliver I were monarchists, sects, and republicans. Monarchists sought to illustrate the advantages of kingship, the sects wrote of the consequences of kingly rule, and the republicans were divided on the question. An analysis of the language and arguments in both the pamphlets addressed to Cromwell and Cromwell’s own speeches reveals that the sects were the most influential group that wrote to Cromwell. At times, sectarian criticisms of the Protectorate were able to elicit responses in Cromwell’s speeches, a feat accomplished by neither monarchists nor republicans. Employing providential language, the sects were able to convince Cromwell that God had judged against the office of king and that any attempt to reestablish such a government would result in eternal damnation.
