Without her all-encompassing support, these ideas would still be locked away in my mind. ii ABSTRACT This study reexamines the history of reception of John Milton and, in particular, his lyric poetry. Moving beyond the often examined social context of the 1640s, this work analyzes Milton's Poems, &c. Upon Several Occasions in the 1673 context of the republication of Milton's lyrics, focusing particularly on the discourse of England's post- Restoration religious nonconformity. The publication date of Poems 1673 places the book in the hands of nonconformist readers, facing harsh penalties and social exclusion due to England's ecclesiastical penal codes. Such disenfranchised readers sought encouragement, instruction, and catharsis. A combined assessment of the published text of Poems 1673 and of a post-Restoration nonconformist readership shows Milton's poetry to be material easily appropriated for the nonconformist agenda. Concerned with the coherency of Poems 1673 as a nonconformist speech-act, the study focuses closely on three major divisions within the book. Seen through comparisons to nonconformist biography, the sonnet sequence of Poems 1673 contains idioms typically employed by nonconformists to gain toleration and acceptance as well as to defend their public "voices." The pastoral section—dominated by Lycidas and A Mask—contains biblical typology utilized by nonconformist preachers and polemicists, engaged in the vitriolic debates over religious toleration. In their post-Restoration context, Lycidas and A Mask function as descriptions of the enemies of nonconformity in order to reverse the negative dichotomy placed on religious dissent. Such has been the case with many of Milton's books. In the hands of Andrew Marvell, the continuation of the literary life Paradise Lost was recommended because of its poetic inspiration.1 In the hands of the public executioner, the lives of Milton's interregnal tracts were condemned to death and subsequently burned as symbols of sedition.2 In the hands of post-Restoration religious dissenters, Samson Agonistes served as a lasting literary monument to their trials, imprisonments, and deaths.3 As both an author and a reader, Milton was aware of the various "lives" that were perhaps in store for his own books. In Areopagitica, Milton suggests that the interaction between readers and texts is an almost symbiotic relationship in which the process of reading breathes continued life into the author's words and in which the author's words affect the lives and minds of readers. Milton writes, "For Books are not absolutely dead things, but doe contain a potencie of life in them to be as active as that soule was whose progeny they are; nay they do preserve as in a violl the purest efficacie 1 See Chapter 2. 2 See below, 25. 3 See Achinstein, Dissent, 130-53. 2 and extraction of that living intellect that bred them."4 Of course, Milton's particular poetic, religious, and political efficacy was, at times, potent enough to elicit a wide variety of contemporary responses; furthermore, Milton's efficacy keeps scholars returning to his texts in order to study the "potencie of life" left in his individual works.

The lyrics for these pieces are all written by the author and performed with hip-hop group Stanley Odd. The songs have been recorded and commercially released by a number of independent record labels (Circular Records, Handsome Tramp Records and A Modern Way Recordings) with worldwide digital distribution licensed to Fine Tunes, and physical sales through Proper Music Distribution. Considering the poetics of Scottish hip-hop, the accompanying critical reflection is an autoethnographic study, focused on rap lyricism, identity and performance. The significance of the writing lies in how the pieces collectively explore notions of identity, ‘outsiderdom’, politics and society in a Scottish context. Further to this, the pieces are noteworthy in their interpretation of US hip-hop frameworks and structures, adapted and reworked through Scottish culture, dialect and perspective.

    Pegs, Cords, and Ghuls: Meter of Classical Arabic Poetry Hazel Scott Haverford College Department of Linguistics, Swarthmore College Fall 2009 There are many reasons to read poetry, filled with heroics and folly, sweeping metaphors and engaging rhymes. It can reveal much about a shared cultural history and the depths of the human soul; for linguists, it also provides insights into the nature of language itself. As a particular subset of a language, poetry is one case study for understanding the use of a language and the underlying rules that govern it. This paper explores the metrical system of classical Arabic poetry and its theoretical representations. The prevailing classification is from the 8th century C.E., based on the work of the scholar al-Khaliil, and I evaluate modern attempts to situate the meters within a more universal theory. I analyze the meter of two early Arabic poems, and observe the descriptive accuracy of al-Khaliil’s system, and then provide an analysis of the major alternative accounts. By incorporating linguistic concepts such as binarity and prosodic constraints, the newer models improve on the general accessibility of their theories with greater explanatory potential. The use of this analysis to identify and account for the four most commonly used meters, for example, highlights the significance of these models over al-Khaliil’s basic enumerations. The study is situated within a discussion of cultural history and the modern application of these meters, and a reflection on the oral nature of these poems. The opportunities created for easier cross-linguistic comparisons are crucial for a broader understanding of poetry, enhanced by Arabic’s complex levels of metrical patterns, and with conclusions that can inform wider linguistic study.* Introduction Classical Arabic poetry is traditionally characterized by its use of one of the sixteen * I would like to thank my advisor, Professor K.

    Milton’s Paradise Lost: Previously Unrecognized Allusions to the Aurora Borealis, and a Solution to the Comet Conundrum in Book 21 clifford j. cunningham National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand This article reveals that John Milton employed an allusion to the aurora borealis in book 6 (79–83) of Paradise Lost, unrecognized in more than three centuries of scholarly analysis. Two other likely allusions, and one certain, to the aurora have also been identified. This research casts doubt on the long-held belief, made popular by the astronomer Edmund Halley (1656–1742), that no notable aurora was visible in England in the seventeenth century. After examining an overlooked note by the English historian William Camden (1551–1623), this article explores the possibility that Milton actually saw an aurora. A solution is also presented here to the long-standing conundrum of the comet near the “Arctic” constellation Ophiuchus in book 2 (707–11) of Paradise Lost. Cet article révèle que John Milton fait allusion à une aurore boréale au sixième livre (79–83) de Paradise Lost, allusion qui est restée ignorée pendant plus de trois siècles de lectures savantes. Une autre allusion à une aurore boréale, ainsi que deux autres, probables, ont été identifiées.     1 Primary Source 7.6 – Milton JOHN MILTON, AREOPAGITICA (1644)1 John Milton (1608–74) is widely considered the greatest writer in English after Shakespeare. A private tutor, an excellent school in London, seven years at Cambridge University, and six years of self-directed study made him an extraordinarily learned man with fluency in Latin, Greek, Hebrew, French, Spanish, and Italian; vast knowledge of modern writing; and intimate familiarity with the literature and thought of ancient Greece and Rome, of late antiquity, and of the Middle Ages. From an early age, he believed himself destined to contribute a great creative work, something that would do credit to the gifts with which the Lord had endowed him. A deeply believing Christian and an unwavering advocate of religious, civil, and political liberty, he devoted those gifts for twenty years to the service of the Puritan and Republican causes. During this era, he penned Areopagitica, probably the greatest polemical defense of the freedom of the press ever written. Following the restoration of the Stuart monarchy in 1660, Milton had to withdraw from political life. Seven years later, he published his masterwork, Paradise Lost, an epic poem recounting the Biblical story of the Fall of Man in over 10,000 lines of blank verse. In Areopagitica, Milton deploys impassioned arguments, vast historical knowledge, extraordinary erudition, and powerful logic to demand the abrogation of a law of 1643 authorizing twenty licensors, or censors, in England to approve or reject book and pamphlet manuscripts before publication, a general policy (not always strictly enforced) dating to the mid-1500s but abolished in 1641 by the Long Parliament.

    SEL 34 (1994) ISSN 0039-3657 Forum II: Milton's Christian Doctrine The Provenance ofJohn Milton's Christian Doctrine: A Reply to William B. Hunter MAURICE KELLEY As scholars have determined it during the past century and a half, the provenance of the Christian Doctrine should invite no suspicion of Milton's authorship. Instead it confirms it. The treatise originated in Milton's youthful collection of proof texts and his perusal of certain shorter systems of theology.' By the 1640s, Edward Phillips reports, his uncle was dictating to him and his fellow students portions of a "Tractate which he thought fit to collect from the ablest of Divines, who had written of that subject: Arnesius, Wollebius. &c. viz. A perfect System of Divinity, of which more hereafter."2 Phillips, however, failed to keep his promise of more information about "A perfect System," but the Anonymous Biographer (Cyriack Skinner) reports that about 1655 Milton began "the framing a Body of Divinity out of the Bible . which . hee finished after the Restoration."3 Our manuscript of the Christian Doctrine confirms Cyriack's rough dating, for the primary hand in it is that ofJeremie Picard, who served as witness or scribe in Milton documents dating from January 1658 to May 1660;4 and Cyriack's mention of Milton's heterodoxies5 indicates Maurice Kelley is Emeritus Professor of English, Princeton University. 154 REPLY TO HUNT E R that he is writing of the Christian Doctrine that we have today. Abstract My thesis explores the way in which the Italian language and literary culture contributed to John Milton’s early development as a poet (over the period up to 1639 and the composition of Epitaphium Damonis). I begin by investigating the nature of the cultural relationship between England and Italy in the late medieval and early modern periods. I then examine how Milton’s own engagement with the Italian language and its literature evolved in the context of his family background, his personal contacts with the London Italian community and modern language teaching in the early seventeenth century as he grew to become a ‘multilingual’ poet. My study then turns to his first published collection of verse, Poems 1645. Here, I reconsider the Italian elements in Milton’s early poetry, beginning with the six poems he wrote in Italian, identifying their place and significance in the overall structure of the volume, and their status and place within the Italian Petrarchan verse tradition.

Gray 1 Yesterday and Today: Milton and the Tyrant’s Image The bell rings, and the dog is given a treat. The bell rings again, and the dog receives another treat. The cycle continues; the bell rings, and the dog eats his treat. But soon Pavlov’s dog has become so accustomed to the cycle that the bell rings and the dog is already salivating, awaiting the treat that always comes next. While a seemingly harmless experiment on a dog, Pavlov’s observation reveals an often-overlooked aspect of the human state – one’s susceptibility to conditioning. Whether a sound, a color, an action, or merely a word – an image is projected that suggests how one should live and interact. While the all-pervasive influence of images dictating reality seems to be a modern phenomenon, it traces its roots to the imposing pyramids of the Egyptian pharaohs or the expressive statues of the ancient Greeks.

  • Oliver Cromwell and the Regicides
    OLIVER CROMWELL AND THE REGICIDES By Dr Patrick Little The revengers’ tragedy known as the Restoration can be seen as a drama in four acts. The first, third and fourth acts were in the form of executions of those held responsible for the ‘regicide’ – the killing of King Charles I on 30 January 1649. Through October 1660 ten regicides were hanged, drawn and quartered, including Charles I’s prosecutor, John Cooke, republicans such as Thomas Scot, and religious radicals such as Thomas Harrison. In April 1662 three more regicides, recently kidnapped in the Low Countries, were also dragged to Tower Hill: John Okey, Miles Corbett and John Barkstead. And in June 1662 parliament finally got its way when the arch-republican (but not strictly a regicide, as he refused to be involved in the trial of the king) Sir Henry Vane the younger was also executed. In this paper I shall consider the careers of three of these regicides, one each from these three sets of executions: Thomas Harrison, John Okey and Sir Henry Vane. What united these men was not their political views – as we shall see, they differed greatly in that respect – but their close association with the concept of the ‘Good Old Cause’ and their close friendship with the most controversial regicide of them all: Oliver Cromwell. The Good Old Cause was a rallying cry rather than a political theory, embodying the idea that the civil wars and the revolution were in pursuit of religious and civil liberty, and that they had been sanctioned – and victory obtained – by God.
