The original essay was little more than two thousand words in length, looking principally at Dryden’s two direct addresses to London in Annus Mirabilis and The Medall. That it transformed into a doctoral thesis owes much to the enthusiasm generated by Peter McCullough. Finally, the gratitude I owe to my family is more than can be adequately expressed here. iv Abstract John Dryden spent his professional life living and writing in London. As well as the implicit or explicit setting, subject or structuring principal for a substantial volume of his corpus, London is a condition of aesthetic production for Dryden’s poems, plays and prose. This thesis contributes to our understanding of Dryden’s centrality to the development of metropolitan literary culture in the Restoration period. Unlike existing criticism, it treats Dryden’s urban modernity as a discrete subject rather than as being incidental to his other literary preoccupations. The thesis draws on the whole range of Dryden’s writing – verse, prose, and plays – but also includes discussion of the representation of London in the work of other Restoration poets and dramatists when they provide illuminating comparative material. An introductory chapter outlines the extent of our biographical knowledge of Dryden’s attachment to London. Some space will be reserved for an abbreviated political history of Westminster and the City of London during the Civil Wars and Restoration of the monarchy, as well as outlining the urban and demographic development of the capital across the seventeenth century. Chapter two explores how metropolitan readers interacted with networks of manuscript and print circulation. Specific consideration is given to how sites of sociability affected the transmission of Dryden’s work. The third chapter looks at the social and cultural development of the ‘Town’ as a built environment and discursive space, principally through the analysis of the prologues, epilogues, and dedications prefixing his drama. The remaining chapters of the thesis look at particular texts – or clusters of texts – chronologically rather than thematically. Chapter four deals with the modes of civic government made possible by the purgative burning of the City of London in Annus Mirabilis. The subject of the fifth chapter is Mac Flecknoe: in particular, it looks at the political, social and literary allusiveness of the poem’s topography, along with its structural debt to the Lord Mayor’s Show and civic pageantry. Chapter six deals with Dryden’s partisan polemic during the Restoration crisis of government. It asks how the offices and institutions of City government, street politics and populism influenced the writing of His Majesties Declaration Defended, Absalom and Achitophel, The Medall, and The Duke of Guise. Some observations are made on the mythological triumph of the Stuart monarchy over the City of London in Albion and Albanius in a brief coda. The final chapter looks at the ways in which translation offered an alternative path for the displaced representation of London, especially after Dryden fell from political favour and lost sources of patronage after the events of the 1688-9 Revolution. Differing grand strategies can lead to disagreements about strategic priorities and the value of possible operations. However, poor personal rela- tions can do more to wreck an alliance than differing opinions over strategy. While good personal relations can keep an alliance operating smoothly, it is often military necessity (and the threat of grand strategic failure) that forces important compro- mises. In the case of the Western Mediterranean, it was the urgent situation created by the Allied defeat at Almanza that forced the British and Austrians to create a work- able solution.     The Rise of India and the India-Pakistan Conflict MANJEET S. PARDESI AND SUMIT GANGULY India is the world's largest democracy and has the fourth-largest econ- omy in terms of purchasing power parity. It is a secular state and has the world's second-largest population. It is also a declared nuclear weapons state with the world's third-largest army and is among the top dozen states in the world in terms of overall defense expenditure. After opening its markets and implementing major structural reforms in its economy after the end of the Cold War, India emerged as one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. In tandem with its economic growth, India has been slowly but surely modernizing its conventional military capabilities as well as its nuclear and missile arsenals. This has led some long-time India-watchers to conclude that India is in the process of becoming a great power. However, India has remained trapped in a conflict with Pakistan-its subcontinental neighbor and rival-ever since the two states were created after the partition of British India in 1947. The two countries have fought four wars since their independence (in 1947-1948, 1965, 1971, and 1999) and have endured many crises during the past 60 years that brought them close to war. In the crises of 1990 and 2001 to 2002, they nearly resorted to the use of nuclear weapons. Pakistan also helped transform the mostly indigenous insurgency in Indian-administered Kashmir that erupted in the late 1980s by providing aid to Islamist terrorist organizations, such as Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Muhammad (eM), which largely replaced the local insurgents.

    LONDON INTERNATIONAL SUMMER PROGRAMME MODULE CATALOGUE 2021 Introduction Welcome to the London International Summer Programme Module Catalogue 2021. The international summer programme offers students the option of studying modules from an introductory level to a more advanced level, in a given subject area. Students opting to study for the entire six-week session will take two modules in total, whilst students participating on only the three week session will take one module. Module Credits All credits obtained during the international summer school will be awarded via an official academic transcript from the University of Westminster with each module being worth 20 UK credits, which normally equates to 4 US or 10 ECTS credits. All modules must be taken on a credit-bearing basis and students will not have the option to audit any module on offer. Module Levels At the University of Westminster, modules are validated at a level corresponding to a particular year of study.     76 THE JOURNAL OF THE RUTGERS UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY SCRIBAL CULTURE AND “A DIALOGUE BETWEEN KING JAMES AND KING WILLIAM” BY ERIN KELLY The latter portion of the seventeenth century saw the emergence of a number of institutions and practices whose existence we may take for granted in the modern era: the two-party parliamentary system pitted Whigs against Tories, the Royal Society formalized many aspects of empirical science, and the Stationers’ Company lost their monopoly over publication rights, effectively paving the way for modern copyright law. These changes emerged out of a tumultuous political context: England had been plunged into civil war in the middle of the century, and even the restoration of the monarchy did not entirely stifle those in parliament who opposed the monarch’s absolute power. The power struggle between the king and Parliament had a direct impact on England’s book industry: the first Cavalier Parliament of 1662 – only two years after the Restoration – revived the Licensing Act in an attempt to exercise power over what material was allowed to be printed. Through the act, the king could appoint a licenser to oversee the publication of books who could deny a license to any books thought to be objectionable.1 Roger L’Estrange, an arch-royalist, became Surveyor of the Presses, and later Licenser of the Press, and zealously exercised the power of these positions by hunting out unauthorized printing presses, suppressing seditious works, and censoring anti-monarchical texts.2 This was a dramatic change from the state of affairs prior to the Restoration, which had seen an explosion in the printing trade, when Parliament ostensibly exercised control over licensing, but did so through inconsistent laws and lax enforcement.3 The struggle between Parliament and the monarchy thus played itself out in part through a struggle for control over the censorship of the press.

    Athens Journal of Humanities & Arts - Volume 1, Issue 2 – Pages 147-156 Women in Arms: Amazons in 17th Century English Drama By Margarete Rubik This paper investigates the portrayal of Amazons in a variety of seventeenth century English plays. Sword women combining male connoted aggression and female beauty functioned as a female dream of empowerment as well as a misogynist nightmare. Hence the image of such 'masculine' women was mutable and could assume a number of different characteristics: Amazons could be portrayed as chivalrous and cruel, glamorous or denaturalized, chaste or lecherous. Humourous pictures of martial women exist side by side with hostile ones attacking the unruliness and insubordination of women and their lust for men. The fate of Amazons in seventeenth century drama is generally either death on the battlefield or marriage and submission to patriarchal rules. There are a few rare examples of dutiful wives still combining marital and martial virtues, but more often these female warriors only lay down their arms at the end of a play, out of love. Despite their prowess, the women always lose the single combat with a worthy male antagonist – usually the very man they love.
