NORTH SEA] BASIC SYSTEM ' • HIS is the only Basic System whose watershed does not penetrate beyond the Alps, so it is immaterial whether it be traced·from W. to E. as [Adriatic .w. North Sea], or from E. toW. as [North Sea . w. Adriatic]. The Basic Watershed, which also answers to the title [Po ~ w. Rhine], is short arid for purposes of practical convenience scarcely requires subdivision, but the distinction between the Aar basin (actually Reuss, and Limmat) and that of the Rhine itself, is of too great significance to be overlooked, to say nothing of the magnitude and importance of the Major Branch System involved. This gives two Basic Sections of very unequal dimensions, but the ., Alps being of natural origin cannot be expected to fall into more or less equal com partments. Two rather less unbalanced sections could be obtained by differentiating Ticino.- and Adda-drainage on the Po-side, but this would exhibit both hydrographic and Alpine inferiority. (1) BASIC SECTION SYSTEM (Po .W. AAR]. This System happens to be synonymous with (Po .w. Reuss] and with [Ticino .w. Price, Martin Francis (Ph.D., Geography) Mountain forests as common-property resources: management policies and their outcomes in the Colorado Rockies and the Swiss Alps. Thesis directed by Professor Jack D. Ives This is a historical, comparative study of the development, implementation, and results of policies for managing the forests of the Colorado Rockies and the Swiss Alps, with emphasis on two study areas in each region. The Pikes Peak (Colorado) and Davos (Switzerland) areas have been adjacent to regional urban centers since the late 19th century. The Summit (Colorado) and Aletsch (Switzerland) areas have experienced a rapid change from a resource-based to a tourism-based economy since the 1950s. The study's theoretical basis is that of common-property resources. Three primary outputs of the forests are considered: wood, recreation, and protection. The latter includes both the protection of watersheds and the protection of infrastructure and settlements from natural hazards. Forest management policies date back to the 13th century in Switzerland and the late 19th century in Colorado, but were generally unsuccessful in achieving their objectives. In the late 19th century, the early foresters in each region succeeded in placing the protection of mountain forests on regional, and then national, political agendas. In consequence, by the beginning of the 20th century, federal policies were in place to ensure the continued provision of the primary functions of the forests recognized at that time: protection and timber supply. During the 20th century, these policies have been expanded, with increasing emphasis on the provision of public goods. However, most policies have been reactive, not proactive. -

Ecotourism and the Transport Network: A Question of Sustainability SORUPIA, Eden ECOTOURISM AND THE TRANSPORT NETWORK: A QUESTION OF SUSTAINABILITY SORUPIA, Eden Senior Lecturer, University of the Philippines ABSTRACT This paper identifies policies and structures which contribute to improve the sustainability of a transport network that serves an ecotourism destination. It looks into the sustainability of the modes available to the public and the level of public transport services, which are deemed important indicators. The experiences and current practices of the Swiss National Park (SNP) in Switzerland and Iguaçu National Park (PNI) in Brazil are analysed as case studies to evaluate and compare strategies that work and why these work. Findings show that although ecotourism destinations support biologically diverse areas, the car remains the major mode to the national parks even with reliable public transport services. This unsustainable travel behaviour can be reversed by changing the balance of transport incentives and disincentives and encouraging mode shift to more sustainable modes. Keywords: ecotourism, sustainable development, sustainable transport, transport network, national parks UNDERSTANDING ECOTOURISM AND THE ROLE OF TRANSPORT Sustainable development and ecotourism were the catchphrases of the 1990s. The former encourages everyone to rethink their utilisation of resources and stresses the importance of taking into consideration the needs of future generations. The latter term involves travel to natural areas rich in biodiversity. Ecotourism became the trend after popular destinations lost their appeal, and going off the beaten track to rediscover the wild was all the rage. Since then, conservationists have been lamenting the loss of biodiversity and attributing this to the increasing visitation and subsequent invasion of tourism of wildlife habitat. -

WHICH SIDE OF THE TRAIN SHOULD I SIT ON? BLS LÖTSCHBERG ROUTE Pages 2 to 3 JUNGFRAU REGION Pages 4 to 6 RHÄTISCHE BAHN Pages 7 to 8 The BLS line from Spiez to Brig via the original Lötschberg Tunnel. As you may already know, since the opening of the Lötschberg Base Tunnel it is now possible to travel between Spiez and Brig in less than 30 minutes. The tunnel starts at Frutigen and exits just before Visp, very quick but obviously completely lacking in scenery. A far more interesting journey is to join one of the BLS “Lötschberger” units at Spiez and go to Brig via the original tunnel between Kandersteg and Goppenstein. The journey does take about an hour but the scenery on a fine day is spectacular. The “Lötschberger” units have both low floor and higher seating areas in standard class and I hope the following guide may be of some help. Please note that if you change sides of the train too often it may annoy/mystify your fellow passengers. I am assuming you will want to sit in the direction of travel.
