CONDUIT AND ERUPTION DYNAMICS OF THE 1912 VULCANIAN EXPLOSIONS AT NOVARUPTA, ALASKA A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE DIVISION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI‘I AT MĀNOA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN GEOLOGY AND GEOPHYSICS December 2017 By Samantha Jo Isgett Dissertation Committee: Bruce F. Houghton, Chairperson Helge M. Gonnermann Christina Neal Thomas Shea John Allen © 2017, Samantha Jo Isgett ii Acknowledgements I probably would not be “standing here today” if my advisor Bruce Houghton had not introduced me to the wonderful world of volcanology. I entered his 300 level volcanology class as a naïve sophomore who had no ambitions of going to graduate school and left knowing that I wanted to be volcanologist and the steps that I needed to take to get there. Bruce has a passion not only for solving the big science question, but also in passing on his knowledge and skill-sets to his students. I cannot thank Bruce enough for seeing in me the potential makings of a scientist and guiding me there. It was, and always will be, a privilege to work with you. I would like to thank my committee — Helge Gonnermann, Thomas Shea, Christina Neal, and John Allen — for pushing me to take every problem and interpretation just a little (or a lot) further. I am especially grateful to Tom and John for stepping in at the last hour. Thank you all for your time and patience. Alain Burgisser, Laurent Arbaret, and Sarah Fagents also brought outside perspectives and skill-sets that were crucial for this project.

Indigenous Peoples and United Nations Human Rights Bodies A Compilation of UN Treaty Body Jurisprudence and the Recommendations of the Human Rights Council Volume IV 2009-2010 Compiled and Edited by Fergus MacKay Forest Peoples Programme 1c Fosseway Business Centre, Stratford Road, Moreton-in-Marsh GL56 9NQ, UK tel: (44) 01608 65289 email: [email protected] Preface This document contains Volume IV of the series of compilations of United Nations human rights bodies’ jurisprudence pertaining to indigenous peoples and covers the years 2009 and 2010.1 Among others, this jurisprudence reflects some degree of positive evolution in thinking about the rights of indigenous peoples in Africa, with three countries either adopting legislation that explicitly addresses indigenous peoples or ratifying ILO Convention No. 169. In the case of the Congo, the law was inspired by the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). During 2009-2010, the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) continued to adopt detailed and responsive observations and recommendations, including under its follow up and early warning and urgent action procedures. CERD also clarified that indigenous peoples’ rights, which are permanent rights, should not be confused with temporary ‘special measures’ – which are measures intended to remedy past discrimination or to correct contemporary inequalities – in a general comment on special measures (see Sec I.C.1 herein). In the case of Guatemala, CERD recommended that participation procedures and protections against relocation be adopted in accordance with ILO 169 and the UNDRIP. It also urged that states increase their efforts to implement the UNDRIP (see, for example, Japan).

  • THE ANDEAN NORTHWEST T E N a L 243 P Y L E N O L
© Lonely Planet 243 The Andean Northwest In stark contrast with the low, flat, humid northeast, Argentina’s northwest sits lofty, dry and tough beneath the mighty Andes. Nature works its magic here with stone: weird, wonderful and tortured rockscapes are visible throughout, from the imposing formations of the Parque Nacional Talampaya in the far south to the twisted strata of the Quebrada de Cafayate; from the jagged ruggedness of the Valles Calchaquíes to the palette of colors of the Quebrada de Humahuaca. And always to the west is the brooding presence of magnificent peaks. The area has an Andean feel with its traditional handicrafts, Quechua-speaking pockets, coca leaves, llamas, the indigenous heritage of the inhabitants, Inca ruins, and the high, arid puna (Andean highlands) stretching west to Chile and north to Bolivia. The region’s cities were Argentina’s first colonial settlements and have a special appeal. The quiet gentility of Santiago del Estero recalls bygone centuries, Salta’s beauty makes it a favorite stop for travelers, while resolutely urban Tucumán, a sugarcane capital, seems to look firmly to the future. Several popular routes await. From Salta you can take in the cactus sentinels of Parque Nacional Los Cardones on your way to gorgeous Cachi, and then head down through the tradi- tional weaving communities of the Valles Calchaquíes to Cafayate, home of some of Argentina’s best wines. Another route from Salta soars into the mountains to the puna mining settlement of San Antonio de los Cobres, heads north to the spectacular salt plains of the Salinas Grandes, and then down to the visually wondrous and history-filled Quebrada de Humahuaca.

The main objective is to evaluate the ability of Landsat and Sentinel satellites to define lithologies and types of volcanic flow and with them to carry out a hazard analysis. The particular features that are going to be analyzed correspond to: lava flows, lahars, ash, volcanic gases, volcanic rocks, erosion, snow, vegetation cover as well as other features such as slopes and water sources of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano. The information has been collected through an analysis that includes a multitemporal period from the last eruptive period to the present.

Drª.
