Alderley's Key Win Against Hyde
! Cheshire County Cricket League 2016 NEWSLETTER : WEEK 10 - JUNE 25 ! Alderley’s key win against Hyde AFTER surrendering their unbeaten record to Chester seven days earlier, Alderley Edge re-established their ECB Premier League title credentials with a tense, 13-runs victory over champions Hyde at Werneth Low. This was a Tale of two Tails, Alderley’s wagging thanks a bright 39 not out from number 10 Chris Cook when he and Mark Currie, 28 took the score from 97-8 to 159-9 to set a final tally of 164, Jason Whittaker 4-39. Hyde on the other hand, reached 147-7 Dave Fitzsimmons 63) before Aussie paceman Aaron Smillie mopped up the tail to 151 all out with a 6-51 return. Bowdon leap-frogged into second spot with their sixth win, over fading Nantwich at South Downs Road, dismissing their visitors for 119, (number 9 batsman Ollie Griffiths 43, Matt Tully 5-58). Bowdon coasted home at 120-2. Pat Ashling, 68, Carl Hey, 45 both not out. Toft beat Neston by five wickets at Booth’s Park in a rain-reduced game, their visitors reaching179-6 from 39 overs, Simon Stokes carrying his bat for a splendid 95, Pete Talbot 4-23. With 81 not out, Rob Jones was again in prime form for Toft, again aided by Aussie Morgan Clark, 67 in a second wicket stand worth 136. Runs galore at Boughton Hall saw Bramhall total 257, Ifti Naseer 73, Dale McKay 56, Adam Wilde 57. Chester topped that with an imperious 261-1 with 24 overs to spare thanks to one of Warren Goodwin’s special innings. -
First Wash-Out Since 2007 the League on Saturday Suffered Its First Complete Wash-Out Due to Rain - Not a Ball Bowled - Since June 30, 2007
Cheshire County Cricket League 2016 NEWSLETTER : WEEK 20 – SEPTEMBER 3 WIDNES CHAMPIONS, UPTON UP; URMSTON DOWN; TATTENHALL DOWN; MIDDLEWICH OUT First wash-out since 2007 THE League on Saturday suffered its first complete wash-out due to rain - not a ball bowled - since June 30, 2007. At this late stage of the season due to many logistical complications, there are no plans to re-arrange the programme. It’s been a wet summer, the previous dampest Saturday being on April 30 when 10 games were cancelled or abandoned. Last season, May 2 saw 16 games washed-out. On August 9, 2008 16 games were cancelled and two played, but on June 30, the previous year, all 18 games were cancelled without a ball bowled. With seven points allotted all round and 50 still available from the last two fixtures on September 10 and 17, the main ECB Premier League upshot is that Urmston are relegated back to the First Division whence they came so spectacularly on the last day of the 2015 campaign. Macclesfield remain marginal favourites to go down with them, but the clubs immediately above - Nantwich, Neston and Timperley - are all in danger and Macc are due to host Nantwich on the last day. At the top of the table, Alderley Edge’s difficult game at Chester Boghton Hall was off which means that, with a lead of 23 points over Bowdon, they still have some way to go before claiming their first Premiership title since 2008. Especially as their last two fixtures are tough ones: home to Hyde and away to closest challengers Bowdon. -
Can Hyde Retain Title?
Cheshire County Cricket League 2015 NEWSLETTER: WEEK 17 – AUGUST 8 / 9 Can Hyde retain title? HYDE are beginning to believe they can retain the ECB Premier League title after a remarkable run of victories have elevated them into second place in the table. Since their last defeat at Alderley Edge on May 23, Hyde have won nine out of 10 games and revenge over Alderley on Saturday by six wickets was their fifth 25-pointer in a row, similar to the late run which earned them their first championship in 2014. Alderley were restricted to 228-9, the in-form Alan Day scoring 64 and teenager Steve Perry 55, Danny Woods taking 4-57. Danny Berry was in fine form with 98 in his side’s reply, aided by Khalid Sawas, 49 and Harry Dearden, 44 as the Werneth Low men romped home at 230-4. Hyde still trail Toft by 19 points, the leaders hammering Macclesfield by eight wickets at Booth’s Park after bowling their visitors out for 209, Rob Keen 88, Rob Jones 5-42. Aussie Jake Hancock was in imperious form after tea, hitting an unbeaten 104, out of 210-2, he and Henry Hughes, 59 adding in an unbroken 160 partnership in the leaders’ 210-2.. Fixture to watch next Saturday …. Hyde v Toft. Shorn of the services of influential Lancashire batsman Liam Livingstone, Nantwich’s four-match winning run ended at Bowdon. The Dabbers were bowled out for 112, Ryan Brown, 35, Chris Ashling, 5-13. Earlier, Bowdon struggled before number 9 batsman James McDougall hit an unbeaten 44 to lift his side to 167-8. -

Dinner Newsletter
Cheshire County Cricket League 2017 SEASON: NEWSLETTER NO. 17 – AUGUST 12 Shock defeats for Top Two CHESTER Boughton Hall must have feared their ECB Premier League lead was about to be extinguished when they were dismissed for 90, their lowest total of the season, at Timperley. However, not far away, Alderley Edge’s shaky form continued when they lost by 20 runs at home to wooden spoonists Bowdon, leaving the gap at the top a fascinating 14 points with five games remaining. Timperley’s return to action at Stockport Road for the first time in 12 months was played on a bowler’s paradise, Chris Page taking 5-19 and Tyrone Lawrence 4-34 to dismiss CBH for 90 from 42 overs, Jack Williams top-scoring with 23 runs at nine. Chester’s bowlers put up a real fight after tea before Timperley scraped through at 91-7 thanks to key knocks of 23 from Nathan Brown and 22 by Grant Hodnett, while Warrren Goodwin took 3-21. Meanwhile, at Alderley Edge, Bowdon could hardly have fancied their chances at tea after being dismissed for 147, Pat Ashling 28, Aussie paceman Hamish Winter-Irving having carved them up with a fine 6-28. But the home batsmen were even more at sea, Calum Rowe, 31 and Sam Perry, 27 being top scorers against keen bowling – notably Alec Makin 3-37 - and they were all out for 127. The upshot is that Chester remain 14 points clear at the top as they prepare to take on Alderley in a ’50 pointer’ next Saturday. -

In the second half of the nineteenth century, driven by the public school ideology of muscular Christianity, participation in team sports, principally football and cricket, came to be viewed by social commentators as a central characteristic of the ideal English man. The ideology of muscular Christianity then spread throughout the rest of Britain and its Empire via schools and imperial institutions such as the army and civil service. By the end of the century the practice of sport was central to the conception of the manly imperial Briton. At the same time subjects of British rule began to participate in British sports in increasing numbers, leading to a public debate on their ability to embody imperial manliness. -
Only Nantwich and Neston Take Full Premier Points on Another Wet
! Cheshire County Cricket League 2016 NEWSLETTER : WEEK 13 - JULY 16 ! Only Nantwich and Neston take full Premier points on another wet day WITH rain steadfastly refusing to relent, the League suffered again on Saturday with four matches in the ECB Premier League lost, plus two in the Second Division, while almost every game suffered reduced overs after hard work by players and helpers to shift covers and sheets The Premiership upshot is that with the top six teams failing to make it to the middle, Nantwich and Neston took the chance to chalk up important victories towards safeguarding their premiership futures. Neston moved off bottom spot with a six wickets win over Timperley at Parkgate – their first since the season’s opening day. In a 78-overs game, Timperley reached 212-4 from 39 overs, Kiwi star Dan Cooper 97, Asif Iqbal 72. Neston topped that with 214-4 in 34 overs, David Hurst 90 not out and Simon Stokes, 76 enjoying a second wicket stand worth 152. Nantwich are profiting from the return after injury of paceman Jimmy Warrington, who took 3-23 to help dismiss Urmston for 155 at the UCG, Callum Parkinson 83. Earlier the Dabbers had declared on 256-6 from 43 overs, Ryan Brown, 100 and skipper Ray Doyle, 88 adding 164 for the third wicket. Off were Bowdon v Chester; Hyde v Cheadle and Macclesfield v Bramhall, while Alderley’s innings at Toft lasted eight overs. This leaves the top places unchanged with Alderley Edge eying the home strait 44 points ahead of Bowdon. -
Goodwin 114 & Hat-Trick For
Cheshire County Cricket League 2016 NEWSLETTER : WEEK 16 – AUGUST 6 - 7 Goodwin 114 & hat-trick for CBH WHILE Alderley Edge got back on an even keel after their hiccup the previous week, the chasing pack of Bowdon, Hyde and Chester Boughton Hall all won to keep up the ECB Premier League pressure, it was CBH who made Saturday’s headlines. After piling up 303-6 in a high-scoring draw at Toft the previous week, CBH this time declared after 42 overs at 324- 4 before bowling out wooden spoonists Urmston for 87. In the Chester innings, Rick Moore (156) and Warren Goodwin (114) put on 216 for the first wicket, both recording their fourth centuries of the season and now total 885 and 704 League runs respectively. Plaudits to Craig Wilson, meanwhile, for a plucky 4-91. Urmston reached 83-3 in reply (Brad Yates 45) when Goodwin came on to record figures of 4-3-4-5, including a hat- trick as Urmies lost their last five wickets without scoring to close on 87. Despite these histrionics, CBH remain fourth, 49 points behind Alderley, who beat Timperley by six wickets. Timperley were bowled out for 121, Andy Windle 4-21 and ‘Edge were in trouble at 46-4 before teenager Ed Fluck, 44 and veteran Mark Currie, 35, saw them home at 122-4, Jack White taking 4-33. Bowdon remain 23 points behind the leaders, beating Macclesfield by 58 runs at South Downs road after posting 181- 8. Openers Simon Marshall, 79 and Jack Tipton, 51 put on 134, but none one of the nine following batsmen managed double figures against John Birchall 4-23 and Salim Raja 3-58.
