Marple quit Over 40s AFTER becoming one of five clubs to concede games on the opening evening of the Over 40s section season – at home to Alderley Edge - Marple have tendered their resignation from the South-East Division. Chairman Chris Lees writes: “We are suffering from lack of players and increasing pressure on ground requirements, especually for junior fixtures. Apologies for causing other clubs inconvenience by pulling out so late.” League contact was subsequently made with Kingsley, who had unsuccessfully applied to join at the SGM in October. However, chairman Kieron Ollier responded by saying that those players earmarked for vets cricket had now undertaken other responsibilities this summer and it would have been virtually impossible to take over Marple’s fixtures in the South East Division. They remain interested in joining for 2017. This means that Marple’s scheduled opponents will now have an open date each week and play 12 games only. Four other games were conceded due to non-availability of players possibly due to Manchester City’s involvement in the European Cup in Madrid. Two further fixtures were postponed by mutual agreement and are being staged this week. Ashley and Grappenhall won their home games in the Central Division, while Brooklands and Sale Silverbacks made ground advantage count in the North-East and Bollington Veterans took full points in the South East. Champions in 2015 Neston, together with Oxton and Tattenhall Wreckers, got off to a winning start in the West zone. John brings Celtic bad luck JOHN PETCH, secretary of the Cheshire Association of Cricket Clubs, is a long-serving member at Hale Barns CC who also follows non-league football, notably at Trafford. John was recently invited by Bramhall chairman Ian Milligan, in his capacity as chief executive of Stalybridge Celtic, to sponsor the season’s last National Conference North game at Bower Fold against Boston United. He did so in the name of Hale Barns CC with several guests from Boston, the Lincolnshire club going on to win 5-0. A well-known ground-hopper with hundreds of clubs already visited, John said: “I was delighted to help Ian out and Celtic are a fine club, but they had a real off-day when we were there. Ian has urged me to limit my future largesse to south Manchester and the Altrincham region!”

GET THE GAME ON, LADS! LEAGUE secretary Geoff Wellsteed circulates the following advice to all clubs via their official representatives after a wet start to the season, with nine out of 18 scheduled fixtures lost on Saturday, April 30. He writes: “All sorts of factors come in to play and I suppose things could have been a lost worse given the untimely heavy rain in most parts of the country. However, two sets of umpires have been in touch feeling that, recognising the ECB’s widely-circulated “GET THE GAME ON’ initiative, more could have been done on the day to get matches started, albeit late, giving at least a minimum overs match. I hope you will not regard this as an unwarranted and unjustified criticism, but I would just remind you again of the Ground Criteria set out in page 163 in the current League Handbook. It states a combination of covers, sheets and drying equipment should be readily available and used as appropriate. Reference is made to the need for a Bow Dry mopping-up machine. Although we do not specify beyond that what should be provided, the provision of forks, blankets/towels, sponges, mops/squeegees, sawdust and matting for covering pitch-ends are obvious items. As the senior league in the county, we need to be seen to be doing everything possible to comply with ECB initiatives as well as safety standards.
