Cheshire lose to Staffs at Nantwich CHESHIRE suffered a 50 runs defeat in their opening Unicorns Knock out group match against neighbours Staffordshire at Nantwich on Sunday. The game, interrupted by showers on a cold day which kept away many would-be spectators, was reduced to 45 overs each. Staffs compiled a daunting 313-5 after some lusty hitting by Meakins’ bearded Peter Wilshaw (110) and clubmate David Brierley, 73 not out, in a century-plus stand. After a tight start, with Danny Woods (1-28 off nine overs) hard to get away the Cheshire bowling was taken apart and Danny Lamb went for 0-89 off nine overs and Jack Williams 1-72 off six. Debut paceman Jack Owen, formerly with Glamorgan, had figures of 0-39 off his nine overs. Cheshire were always well behind the clock, but after a sound 68 from Calum Rowe a brisk unbroken eighth wicket stand between Jack Williams, 69 off 42 balls and Ash Davies, 35 not from 28, took them to a decent closing tally of 263-8. Cheshire team: Lee Dixon , Warren Goodwin, Jack Williams, Ashley Davis, Rick Moore, Will Owen, (Chester Boughton Hall), Calum Rowe (Alderley Edge), Rob Jones (Toft), Danny Lamb (Bramhall), Dan Woods (York), Ryan Brown wicket-keeper (Nantwich). 12th man: Alex Banks (Elworth). Cheshire are next in action against Herefordshire – who beat Shropshire in their opening game - at Colwall on Sunday, May 1 (11 a.m.). They complete their group games against Wales at Chester on Sunday, May 8 and Shropshire at Oswestry on Sunday, May 15. If Cheshire win their group they will stage the quarter-final at Chester on Sunday, June 12.

Fond memories of tours abroad … THE first overseas cricket tour experienced by W&MTB was in the winter of 1994-95 when Old Trafford personality Jack Simmons persuaded us to join his entourage after a fascinating get-together at the home of an Alderley Edge millionaire. We left the UK halfway through Mike Atherton’s Tour in December and reached Sydney after 23 hours of virtually non-stop flight (not to be recommended). Just in time to see Darren Gough being invalided home with his leg in plaster. A Customs Control officer sneered: “That’s your Ashes gone, folks, you might as well take the next flight home!” We didn’t, but he was right and by the time we reached Adelaide for the 4th Test we were 2-0 down. On the third day there was a tropical storm and the wonderful Norfolk Pine trees round the ground were bent double. The wind and rain was so strong the groundstaff had to lie full length on the covering sheets to protect the square. We stayed at the team hotel and asked manager Keith Fletcher at breakfast on the last day “Have we any chance?” To which he replied with a yawn: “Nah! We’ll hopefully get a draw”. How wrong he was as England went on to win a thrilling match built on the final Test century by Mike Gatting, leaving us wondering about the nature of Fletcher’s dressing-room pep talk. Sixty somethings or not, we ditched our dignity and joined 40 other fanatics by performing the Conga the half-mile back to the hotel chanting “Michael - Atherton’s - Barmy - Army”. Wouldn’t dare do that today. More next week.

WEBSITE PROBLEMS … THE website cheshirecountycl.play-cricket.com monitored by Darren Sutcliffe and Stuart Hayes now takes all 1st XI results with brief match details which must be posted by 10 p.m. Full scoreboards must be posted by 12 noon the following day. This applies to Saturday League and mid-week T20 matches. There are similar, but less urgent requirements for 2nd and 3rd XIs. There were problems over the opening week-end of the season when Darren Sutcliffe spent hours taking on late play-cricket registrations from clubs. Players not registered show up as Unsure and players not recognised by the system are shown in red type. By Sunday pm all 18 games were comprehensively reported on the website with the exception of Timperley, with no entry. Clubs should contact Darren Sutcliffe if further help is needed. 1st XI results now need to be reported to Competition secretary Ian Sharrock via the new on-line paperless system. For information Ian’s e-mail address is [email protected]

THE League’s Pitchero website administered by Richard Fennah, which contains documents such as this and previous issues of the Newsletter can be obtained on www.cheshirecountycl.org.uk

THE weekly Newsletter will normally be available on Monday mornings from April 25 to the Press, League Officers & Cricket Committee members and to individual subscribers who have made special requests. Please have patience if the Newsletter is sometimes delayed as a new system of reporting results and tables to the Editor is being introduced this season.
