UNDER 17 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS 2017/18 | CRICKET AUSTRALIA HAZLEWOOD Q&A

AT JUST 17 YEARS OF AGE, JOSH HAZLEWOOD MADE HIS SHEFFIELD SHIELD DEBUT FOR NEW SOUTH WALES. TWO YEARS LATER, HE WAS PLAYING FOR AUSTRALIA. NOW, AT 26, HE’S ONE OF THE BEST FAST BOWLERS IN THE WORLD.

Josh, what’s life like as a professional cricketer? It’s a pretty good lifestyle. You grow up thinking you might be a chance at some stage to play cricket for a living. For it to be a reality now, it’s a pretty special time. It doesn’t last forever, so you’ve got to enjoy it while you can as much as you can. Even though there’s a lot of pressure, you’ve got to get that enjoyment out of it or there’s no real point in playing.

How did you first get involved in the game? I first started playing probably the same as everyone else, in the backyard as early as I could pick up a bat. I had a brother about two years older than me, so I played with him forever in the backyard. There weren’t many schools around where I grew up, so we had to mix teams from different schools and different ages as well to get the numbers. I was fortunate in a way to play against guys two and three years older than me straight away.

8 What was your Pathway from junior cricket to representing Australia? My journey was a little bit different, being from the country. I played representative cricket for Tamworth from Under 12s to Under 16s with a few teams, and played in the local representative competition. You go to heaps of trials and hopefully make the teams. Along with the junior cricket and representative cricket, I played for Old Boys CC in Tamworth. What did it mean to you to receive There’s four grades in Tamworth and I played your Baggy Green cap? 4th Grade at 11 or 12, and then pretty much went straight to 1st Grade at about 13. Being a It was a special time. I didn’t get my Baggy 13-year-old playing with men, you learned a lot Green until just before my 24th birthday. There pretty quickly and I think that’s probably where was talk around the traps that I’d always end you can get a leg up in the country compared up getting it, but you don’t trust the word of to the city. anyone until you actually have it in your hands! It was pretty special, up in Brisbane against What was your National Championships . Glenn McGrath presented it to me – he experience like… and are you still playing had a similar story, being from the country and with some of those teammates now? a fast bowler, so it was great to have him there Absolutely – is one who I played to present that. with in my first state Under 17s carnival. He’d Do you have a favourite on-field moment – only just given up the gloves and started a career highlight so far? bowling, so he was still pretty raw, but we obviously know where he is now! There were Team efforts stick out a lot, above individual ones. quite a few guys from different states as well. The 2015 World Cup final, being part of that was I played one Under 17s tournament when I was pretty special at a packed MCG. Things like an a year young, and then I played two Under 19s overseas Test victory in India, not many teams tournaments at two years young and one year have achieved that. Even though we lost the young. It was that first big step towards when series, we won a Test match in India which was you think you might have that chance to be a a pretty special moment, and probably playing professional cricketer. at Lords I think and winning that Test against England quite convincingly. What made you realise you were good enough to compete against the world’s best? What would your advice be to the players at this year’s Under 17 Championships? I played one ODI when I was still 19, and I don’t Not to take the game too seriously at that think I was ready at that stage but it was a good eye-opener. Obviously you don’t think you’re age, to enjoy every opportunity and every good enough at that stage to compete regularly game you play. That’s the main reason we against the best players in the world, I think play the game, the enjoyment factor and that comes over time. I’m in a position now playing with your mates. Some people have where I think I’m good enough to be playing missed those whole entire tournaments at this level consistently – it’s a big difference and still play for Australia, so it’s not the between playing that one good game and be-all and end-all, but it’s obviously a great delivering for your country time and time again. opportunity to put your name out there.

UNDER 17 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS 2017/18 | CRICKET AUSTRALIA Led by Joshua Staines, the ACT/NSW Country team head into this season’s Under 17 National Championships as one of the teams to beat. Finishing in third position at last year’s Under 17 National Championships, the team will be hoping to be there at the pointy end of the carnival. Players to watch this season include Kaleb Phillips and Glenn Winsor, who will be key in determining the fate of this very talented team. The pathway alignment of regional NSW and ACT has seen some very exciting prospects play at National Championship level and this season’s crop of youngsters will again be a pleasure to watch.

12 Competing for the third time is the Cricket Australia XI. Selected from the School Sport Australia 15 & Under Championship earlier this year, this squad boasts immense talent, with the Youth Selection Panel deeming these players more than capable of playing against the older teams. Last season the Cricket Australia XI finished the Under 17 National Championships eighth overall, and played scintillating cricket at times. The young team will no doubt be aiming to be in the mix at the pointy end of the championships.

24 COUNTRY

The Victorian Country side return to the Under 17 National Championships for their third year. Last season the country boys finished in ninth place after being rocked by injuries early on. This year’s crop of talent includes gun batter and former Cricket Australia XI representative, Zane Keighran, who will surely be one to watch. Patrick Rowe is easy on the eye with the bat and is a very talented gloveman. These Victoria Country boys will present very tough competition and could well go all the way this year.
