Goodwin 114 & Hat-Trick For Cheshire County Cricket League 2016 NEWSLETTER : WEEK 16 – AUGUST 6 - 7 Goodwin 114 & hat-trick for CBH WHILE Alderley Edge got back on an even keel after their hiccup the previous week, the chasing pack of Bowdon, Hyde and Chester Boughton Hall all won to keep up the ECB Premier League pressure, it was CBH who made Saturday’s headlines. After piling up 303-6 in a high-scoring draw at Toft the previous week, CBH this time declared after 42 overs at 324- 4 before bowling out wooden spoonists Urmston for 87. In the Chester innings, Rick Moore (156) and Warren Goodwin (114) put on 216 for the first wicket, both recording their fourth centuries of the season and now total 885 and 704 League runs respectively. Plaudits to Craig Wilson, meanwhile, for a plucky 4-91. Urmston reached 83-3 in reply (Brad Yates 45) when Goodwin came on to record figures of 4-3-4-5, including a hat- trick as Urmies lost their last five wickets without scoring to close on 87. 2012 season: September 15 Newsletter URMSTON & WIDNES RELEGATED Nantwich complete title hat-trick NANTWICH completed a richly-deserved hat-trick of ECB Premier League championships on a momentous final day at Toft when they chalked up their eighth victory in nine completed games since the season’s halfway mark. They finish 12 points clear of Hyde, who also won their final game, at Marple. Receiving the trophy from League chairman David Humpage after the close of play, Nantwich skipper Andy Newton told a large crowd: “It has been a wonderful run-in for us to win this trophy a third time. We have done it in a different way, with some different players, but it’s been just as satisfying”. Amid rumours that he intends to stand down rather than try to top the hat-trick records of Bowdon (2002-03-04) and Oulton Park (2005-6-7), the Dabbers’ popular skipper said he planned to go on holiday to Portugal to contemplate. His team looked in trouble when they were reduced to 70-6, Jonny Kettle 26, by Toft’s young spinners, but a chancy 29 – the top innings of the day - by paceman Jimmy Warrington and Sam Hunt’s useful 21 helped them limp to 126. For Toft, Jimmy Lomas claimed 6-82 and Rob Jones 3-25. On a poor wicket shorn of all grass and with crumbling dust, Toft were reduced to 7-5 by Nantwich’s pacemen. England junior Jones, 28 and Ed Stubbs, 21, put up mature resistance, but were eventually were no match for the varied attack of Chris Connolly, who wound up with 5-27, left-arm spinner Ollie Griffiths, 2-9 off 12 accurate overs and the league’s top wicker-taker Warrington, 2-15 as they fell to 80 all out.

  • Hawk Green Seeking to Join League in 2019
Cheshire County Cricket League APRIL, 2018 NEWSLETTER Hawk Green seeking to join League in 2019 DERBYSHIRE & Cheshire League club Hawk Green have applied to join the Vivio Cheshire County League at the end of the 2018 season. With a fine ground at Rhode Field, Upper Hibbert Lane, situated a couple of miles from Marple, Hawk Green made a formal application to switch leagues via the Cheshire Clubs Cricket Committee. The development was subsequently discussed between the officers of the County and Cheshire Leagues and, considering the strength of the club and its impressive facilities, it was agreed to advocate that Hawk Green be admitted to the County League for the 2019 season, to play in Division Two. If a proposal that they should be admitted, to be made by Didsbury and seconded by Tattenhall, is ratified at the League management meeting at Warrington on Wednesday, April 11, only the bottom club in Division 2 will be relegated from the County League and only the champion club promoted from the UK Fast League at the end of the 2018 campaign. Hawk Green 2nd XI would then also be promoted to play in the County League’s Second Division. Reporting to the League’s March Cricket Committee, chairman David Humpage said: “Hawk Green are the current Derbyshire and Cheshire League champions and have good playing strength throughout the club, and they possess a ground which easily passes muster. While some people in the UK Fast League felt Hawk Green should start at the bottom of the pyramid and work their way up, it was the general consensus that Hawk Green were of sufficient calibre to merit a place in the County League in 12 months’ time”.

Cheshire County Cricket League 2017 SEASON: NEWSLETTER NO. 17 – AUGUST 12 Shock defeats for Top Two CHESTER Boughton Hall must have feared their ECB Premier League lead was about to be extinguished when they were dismissed for 90, their lowest total of the season, at Timperley. However, not far away, Alderley Edge’s shaky form continued when they lost by 20 runs at home to wooden spoonists Bowdon, leaving the gap at the top a fascinating 14 points with five games remaining. Timperley’s return to action at Stockport Road for the first time in 12 months was played on a bowler’s paradise, Chris Page taking 5-19 and Tyrone Lawrence 4-34 to dismiss CBH for 90 from 42 overs, Jack Williams top-scoring with 23 runs at nine. Chester’s bowlers put up a real fight after tea before Timperley scraped through at 91-7 thanks to key knocks of 23 from Nathan Brown and 22 by Grant Hodnett, while Warrren Goodwin took 3-21. Meanwhile, at Alderley Edge, Bowdon could hardly have fancied their chances at tea after being dismissed for 147, Pat Ashling 28, Aussie paceman Hamish Winter-Irving having carved them up with a fine 6-28. But the home batsmen were even more at sea, Calum Rowe, 31 and Sam Perry, 27 being top scorers against keen bowling – notably Alec Makin 3-37 - and they were all out for 127. The upshot is that Chester remain 14 points clear at the top as they prepare to take on Alderley in a ’50 pointer’ next Saturday.

In the second half of the nineteenth century, driven by the public school ideology of muscular Christianity, participation in team sports, principally football and cricket, came to be viewed by social commentators as a central characteristic of the ideal English man. The ideology of muscular Christianity then spread throughout the rest of Britain and its Empire via schools and imperial institutions such as the army and civil service. By the end of the century the practice of sport was central to the conception of the manly imperial Briton. At the same time subjects of British rule began to participate in British sports in increasing numbers, leading to a public debate on their ability to embody imperial manliness.
