Sunday, 16 May 2021 Page 3 of 11 SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 46 UNITED SERVICES PORTSMOUTH AND THE FA VASE United Services’ exploits in this season’s FA Vase were well documented in the last newsletter and immense credit is due to all concerned on their reaching the last four of the Competition, a remarkable feat for a Step Six Club. The latter stages consisted of, in a manner of speaking, a number of steps in to the unknown, because their record over the years in the Competition has not raised many eyebrows – and that is in no way a criticism, it is a fact of life for all Step Six Clubs. The Club first entered the Vase under their current name in 2004/05 when they lost at Sussex Club Mile Oak in their opening game and this was repeated in the next four seasons as they went down to Sidley United, Holmer Green, Milton United and Brading at the first time of asking. Sidley, from Sussex, was a home tie and Milton United were also victorious after a draw Burnaby Road. Holmer Green necessitated a trip to Buckinghamshire and they also had to cross the Solent to Brading having conceded ground advantage - presumably their own pitch was unavailable. The first success came in 2009/10 with a 4-0 win at Lymington after which they went down to the only goal of the game against Hamble ASSC. This was followed by three more first time exits at the hands of Mile Oak (again), Cowes Sports and Swanage Town & Herston, the last probably the most disappointing since they were a level lower. 2013/14 saw their best result to date with a 6-1 home victory over Western League Calne Town before losing by the odd goal in five against Winterbourne United, again from the Western League. The following season saw a revenge victory over Swanage Town & Herston – on penalties – and a defeat of Ringwood Town before losing to near neighbours AFC Portchester in the First Round Proper. 2015/16 is perhaps best described as the good and the bad as a creditable one all draw at Sholing was followed by a 6- 0 defeat in the replay. Western League Corsham Town scored the only goal of the game in the opening tie in 2016- 17 but the following season saw the First Round Proper reached again. There was an initial defeat of Verwood and then victory over Midhurst & Easebourne from Sussex before Christchurch proved too strong in a 3-0 victory. Two more seasons of opening game defeats, at the hands of Brockenhurst and Western League Sherborne, led to the present season which saw a halt in the Competition midstream followed by a sequence of matches week by week. As previously stated, this was well covered in the last newsletter but to recap briefly their run started with victory at AFC Portchester, in front of a designated capacity attendance of three hundred, followed by a win over Bournemouth with the match being played at Portchester. Then followed wins over Millbrook from the West Country, Christchurch, on penalties, and Flackwell Heath before the semi final loss to Binfield, to lose at that stage is always difficult to take but one imagines when it is on penalties it is made even harder. But as was said at the start of this piece it was a superb achievement that bought the Club, its officials and players a lot of credit and reflected well on the League and hopefully they can build on that success next season on all counts next season. Prior to 1986/87, the club played in the 1974/75 competition, but fell at the first hurdle with a 2-0 home defeat to Gosport Borough and again lost at home in 1975/76 to Bracknell Town who progressed courtesy of a best of five victory. Next time they entered was in 1983/84 and that saw a 2-0 home win for opponents Ash United, with 1985/86 seeing the club unfortunately fall foul of player eligibility rules. Their full FA Vase record whilst in Wessex League membership is reproduced here.
