Darren made his senior debut in 1990/91, under in a Football League Members Cup tie at City – replacing another youth protégé of the time, Darryl Powell. He quickly earned a reputation during his formative years at Fratton Park as a winger with a good turnof pace and an ability to get in a telling cross from any angle. Darren also possessed boundless energy and stamina, a legacy from his days as a top schoolboy cross-country runner – and ironically almost took that path into sport after hometown club, Southampton overlooked him. Saints loss was very much Pompey’s gain, and Anderton went on to make 77 appearances for Pompey over two seasons scoring 13 goals, playing a pivotal role in Pompey’s memorable 1992 FA Cup run, scoring the opening goal against Liverpool (see picture) in the semi-final at Highbury. Anderton's performances soon attracted interest from clubs, and prompted then Spurs boss to pay out £1.75 for him in 1992 – with Darren to spend the next 12 years of his career at . When Venables left White Hart Lane to take up the England manager's position he brought Anderton into the full international fold, with a debut against Denmark in March 1994. Darren recovered from a seven-month absence with a groin injury to feature prominently in England's Euro 96 campaign, and was inches from putting England in the final when his shot his the post in the semi against Germany at Wembley. In 1999, Darren helped Tottenham to League Cup glory with a 1-0 win against Leicester City at Wembley. Although injury throughout Darren’s career has been well documented (former Pompey team mate Andy Gosney allegedly coined the ‘sicknote’ nickname) he would make over 500 career appearances at club level – playing mainly amongst the elite - with 30 England caps and seven international goals to his name. Darren later moved to Birmingham, Wolves – where he would once again link up with former Spurs and England boss, – and finally, Bournemouth. Anderton bowed out of professional football in December 2008 with a fairytale finish, scoring the winning goal against Chester with a spectacular volley in the 88th minute after coming on as a second-half substitute.
