FREE TRIP TO ISRAEL CHAPTER NEWS LOS ANGELES FILM FESTIVAL 25TH ANNIVERSARY HIGHLIGHTS A C E N T E R F O R A L L J E W S Celebrating the SEC By Dr. Jose A. Nessim Founder The Sephardic Educational Center in Jerusalem (SEC) celebrated its 25th anniversary last year. It is the only such Center in the Jewish world. The SEC campus is composed of three buildings that once served as the headquarters of all the Jews in Ottoman Palestine up until the beginning of the 20th century. Today, the SEC has lodging for up to 250 guests. Over 35,000 young people and adults have visited the SEC in Jerusalem to study and learn over the past 25 years. The SEC is a movement that is open to all Jews. Young people of high school and university age, as well as young single professionals up to age 36 have visited the SEC since we opened our doors in 1980 to learn more about Jewish-Sephardic cul - ture, philosophy, history, etc. Over the years, the SEC established an international Young Adult Movement that continues to unite the next generation with classes, socials, cultural and religious events. Through these activities which have been organized by mostly volunteers, we have brought thousands back to their religious identity and happily boast hundreds of couples who today are mar - ried thanks to the SEC. The SEC also has an accredited university program in Jerusalem, known as Makor, that can be taken for one or two semesters, and we offer scholarships that cover part of the tuition.

RECONSTRUCTIONISM IN AMERICAN JEWISH LIFE by CHARLES S. LIEBMAN NATURE OF RECONSTRUCTIONISM • ITS HISTORY AND INSTITUTIONS • ITS CONSTITUENCY • AS IDEOLOGY OF AMERICAN JUDAISM • FOLK AND ELITE RELIGION IN AMERICAN JUDAISM INTRODUCTION JLHE RECONSTRUCTIONIST MOVEMENT deserves more serious and systematic study than it has been given. It has recently laid claim to the status of denomination, the fourth in American Judaism, along with Orthodoxy, Conservatism, and Reform. Its founder, Mordecai M. Kaplan, probably is the most creative Jewish thinker to concern himself with a program for American Judaism. He is one of the few intellectuals in Jewish life who have given serious consideration to Jewish tradition, American philosophical thought, and the experiences of the American Jew, and confronted each with the other. Reconstructionism is the only religious party in Jewish life whose origins are entirely American and whose leading personalities view Judaism from the perspective of the exclusively American Jewish experience. The Reconstructionist has been Note. This study would not have been possible without the cooperation of many Reconstructionists, friends of Reconstructionism, and former Reconstructionists. All consented to lengthy interviews, and I am most grateful to them. I am espe- cially indebted to Rabbi Ira Eisenstein, president of the Reconstructionist Founda- tion, who consented to seven interviews and innumerable telephone conversations, supplied me with all the information and material I requested, tolerated me through the many additional hours I spent searching for material in his office, and responded critically to an earlier version of this study. Rabbi Jack Cohen read the same version. He, too, pointed to several statements which, in his view, were unfair to Reconstructionism.

ETHNICITY AND FAITH IN AMERICAN JUDAISM: RECONSTRUCTIONISM AS IDEOLOGY AND INSTITUTION, 1935-1959 A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY By Deborah Waxman May, 2010 Examining Committee Members: Lila Corwin Berman, Advisory Chair, History David Harrington Watt, History Rebecca Trachtenberg Alpert, Religion Deborah Dash Moore, External Member, University of Michigan ii ABSTRACT Title: Ethnicity and Faith in American Judaism: Reconstructionism as Ideology and Institution, 1935-1959 Candidate's Name: Deborah Waxman Degree: Doctor of Philosophy Temple University, 2010 Doctoral Advisory Committee Chair: Lila Corwin Berman This dissertation addresses the development of the movement of Reconstructionist Judaism in the period between 1935 and 1959 through an examination of ideological writings and institution-building efforts. It focuses on Reconstructionist rhetorical strategies, their efforts to establish a liberal basis of religious authority, and theories of cultural production. It argues that Reconstructionist ideologues helped to create a concept of ethnicity for Jews and non-Jews alike that was distinct both from earlier ―racial‖ constructions or strictly religious understandings of modern Jewish identity. iii DEDICATION To Christina, who loves being Jewish, With gratitude and abundant love iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This dissertation is the product of ten years of doctoral studies, so I type these words of grateful acknowledgment with a combination of astonishment and excitement that I have reached this point. I have been inspired by extraordinary teachers throughout my studies. As an undergraduate at Columbia, Randall Balmer introduced me to the study of American religious history and Holland Hendrix encouraged me to take seriously the prospect of graduate studies.

Transforming virtually every aspect of daily life from dress to social relations, the mass- d motorcar gave rise to the suburbs, furthered the emancipa- women, and, it was said, even increased attendance at rch, especially among the nation's farmers. In many parts of the ntry, reported Life magazine, an "automobile is almost as neces- as a pair of legs."' Whether "solid and dependable," or "effer- ent and iridiscent," like the shiny new Buicks on display at New k's Waldorf Astoria in 1954, the American automobile was ety heralded as an "essential of normal living."2 Not everyone, though, celebrated the car. For America's rabbis, rticularly those affiliated with what was then the nation's fastest- wing Jewish denomination, the Conservative movement, the omotive life produced more consternation than celebration. It ced the clergy to choose between freedom and discipline, between benefits of space and the constraints of time, placing them in a uble bind. On the one hand, the car made possible the collective cision of an estimated three million American Jews to build a life themselves and their children in the suburbs, a phenomenon that directly to a surge in the Conservative synagogue's popularity. No part of the text may be reproduced in any form, nor may any page be photographed and reproduced, without written permission of the publisher. Manufactured in the United States of America Designed by G&H SOHO, Inc. CONTENTS Preface . vii Subject Index . 1 Author Index . 193 Book Reviews . 303 v PREFACE The goal of this cumulative index is two-fold. It is to serve as an historical reference to the conventions of the Rabbinical Assembly and to the statements, thoughts, and dreams of the leaders of the Conser- vative movement. It is also to provide newer members of the Rabbinical Assembly, and all readers, with insights into questions, problems, and situations today that are often reminiscent of or have a basis in the past. The entries are arranged chronologically within each author’s listing. The authors are arranged alphabetically. I’ve tried to incorporate as many individuals who spoke on a subject as possible, as well as included prefaces, content notes, and appendices. Indices generally do not contain page references to these entries, and I readily admit that it isn’t the professional form. However, because these indices are cumulative, I felt that they were, in a sense, an historical set of records of the growth of the Conservative movement through the twentieth century, and that pro- fessional indexers will forgive these lapses.
