Sunday, May 7, 2017 Congregation AABJ&D Dinner 51st Shul Dinner Kessler Minyanaires We are so pleased you are joining us this evening for Congregation Ahawas Achim B’nai Jacob & David’s 51st Annual Dinner. Tonight, we have gathered together to honor four most deserving couples and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem. We salute Pam & R’ Matt Greenwood, our Guests of Honor; Robin & Daniel Amster, the Rabbi Alvin and Marylin Marcus Keter Shem Tov recipients; Rachel & Stephen Isler, Young Leadership awardees; and Lee & Stan Saal, recipients of the Legacy Award. We also bestow the Service Award upon the Kessler Minyanaires. All of you have given so much to the Shul and the community at large in different and quiet ways. None of you is looking for the kavod, but you surely deserve it and we thank you for allowing us to publicly honor you tonight. Tonight’s honorees have put community first and foremost in their lives for many years, dedicating their time, talent, and guidance to the Shul. AABJ&D did not become what it is today in a vacuum. We are fortunate to have so many hardworking and dedicated volunteers step up to the plate. With the help of Rabbi Marcus, Rabbi Zwickler, Rabbi Sharbat and people like our honorees, AABJ&D and West Orange continue to be warm and vibrant. We have experienced much growth, and happily continue to welcome new families every year. As co-chairs of the Dinner, we would like to thank the hard-working office staff and the many individual volunteers who served on various committees to help make tonight a success. On behalf of the members of Congregation AABJ&D, our heartfelt appreciation goes to each and every one of you for your support. Last, but certainly not least, we express continuing thanks to Mickey, David and Travis Weiss of The Wilshire Grand Hotel for their beautiful venue--a most appropriate setting for a lovely communal evening. May Hashem bless our Shul and community for many years to come. The theme of the Dinner this year is the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the reunification of Yerushalayim which takes place on the 28th of Iyar. Yerushalayim has historically always represented the hopes and dreams of our people throughout the millennia, and represents the longing of our people to return home. Today, in our times it's relatively easy to believe in the destiny of the Jewish people. Just a generation ago, that belief would have been questioned by many. We are most grateful to Hashem for allowing us to live in a generation where we can witness His miracles and our peoples return to His most beloved city. It is appropriate that during a month that we collectively celebrate this incredible moment in history, we at AABJ&D pay tribute to couples who have enhanced our community by their dedication and devotion to our Shul. These are couples who inspire hope in the future health of our Shul community. Our guests of honor Rabbi Matt and Pam Greenwood have devoted a tremendous amount of their personal time and energy to ensuring that our Shul experience is enhanced by service to our minyanim and our Youth department. They lead with determination, passion, and commitment. They are truly deserving of tonight’s honor. Danny and Robin Amster have devoted themselves on multiple levels to the wellbeing of our Shul membership. Their positive approach and warm personalities enhance our Shul in many ways. They too are most deserving of the award they receive tonight. For years Lee Saal would spend Shabbat mornings putting a smile on generations of our youth through her storytelling. There is little that Stan and Lee collectively would not do when the Shul needed them. It is our opportunity to thank them tonight. Stephen and Rachel Isler represent the future. From setting the lights to chairing committees, they are invested in the future of our Shul and are most deserving of the award they receive tonight. Finally, the individuals who walk in the heat and freezing cold to make a minyan that heals the sick: Thank you to our Kessler Minyanaires. You are the pride of our community. Lshana Habaah BiYersushalayim Habenuyah! --Rabbi Eliezer Zwickler ב"ה When Yaffa and I moved into West Orange 34 years ago, I never dreamed that I would be honored to serve as the President of AABJ&D. Yet, when the committee approached me three years ago, I recognized the enormity of the challenge and followed in the footsteps of two of my brothers in becoming a president of a prestigious shul. It is an honor for which I am deeply grateful and I will always remember the trust that this congregation had in me to elect me to serve as President of AABJ&D for three years. .All beginnings are difficult ,כל ההתחלות קשות The Mechilta of Rabbi Yishmael on Parshat Yitro teaches us that Three years ago, I too felt the challenges of serving as President of AABJ&D. A shul President is on call 24/7. The President is expected to do everything and is responsible for everything. One’s business and one’s family life are affected by being President. Adjusting to the life of being President of AABJ&D and incorporating the presidency into one’s daily activities takes time. That is probably the greatest difficulty. But along with the challenges come successes and satisfaction. The highlight of my presidency was celebrating our shul’s Jubilee year, a culmination of years of planning which Mali Schwartz and her committee undertook even before I became President. On that special night, we thanked Rabbi and Mrs. Marcus for their many years of service to our community. We also paid tribute to Mickey Weiss, the one founding member whose acts of Chessed I personally have tried to emulate. Mickey, a respected pillar of the community, in his own unique way, has given tirelessly to the shul for so many years without expecting an ounce of gratitude. In addition to the Jubilee celebration, this past year, our Marketing Committee created a spirit and energy of rebirth within the West Orange Jewish community that influenced 18 new families to relocate to West Orange and to join AABJ&D. The list of shiurim and classes continues to grow, and we continue to attract influential and prestigious speakers to serve as Scholars in Residence. New programs, spearheaded by Debbie Buechler, in Israeli dancing, cooking and Jewish History have all been well attended. Most importantly, we have started to realize that we are all stakeholders in the West Orange Jewish community and not just consumers. We must give of ourselves if we expect to benefit. It is this perspective that will serve the community well in the coming years. None of our accomplishments and innovations could have been achieved without the tireless efforts of so many of you. You should be proud of what we have done in building upon the work of those who served before me. I am forever grateful to Rabbi Zwickler and Rabbi Sharbat for their counsel and assistance on so many issues. In addition, the Officers and Board of Directors dedicated themselves to the many successes that we enjoyed and to the milestones that we celebrated together. .and thank you so much for your support, encouragement and help "יישר כחך “ ,To each of you I say I am also deeply thankful to Yaffa and to my children. Being President put demands on their lives and they willingly sacrificed some of our time together for the sake of the shul. Finally, if beginnings are difficult, know that endings seem even more difficult. While there are always missed opportunities and unfinished challenges that one reflects upon, as well as items that could have been done differently, I know that I mostly will miss working with all of you on a daily basis. It has been a pleasure, an honor, and a privilege to serve as President of AABJ&D, and I close by simply saying to you, “Thank you from the bottom of my heart”. Larry Mazel Tov to the 2017 honorees!
