Congregation AABJ&D Dinner 52nd Shul Dinner Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at the Wilshire Grand Hotel We are so pleased you are joining us this evening for Congregation Ahawas Achim B’nai Jacob & David’s 52nd Annual Dinner. Tonight, we have gathered together to honor three most deserving couples. Helen & Jeff Lichtman Guests of Honor Michele & David Glazer Rabbi Alvin and Marylin Marcus Keter Shem Tov Award Robyn & Bruce Shoulson Lifetime Achievement Award Tonight’s honorees have put community first and foremost in their lives for many years, dedicating their time, talent, and guidance on behalf of the Shul. AABJ&D did not become what it is today in a vacuum. We are fortunate to have so many hardworking and dedicated volunteers step up to the plate. With the help of Rabbi Marcus, Rabbi Zwickler, Rabbi Sharbat and people like our honorees, AABJ&D and West Orange continue to be warm and vibrant. We have experienced much growth, and happily continue to welcome new families every year. As co-chairs of the Dinner, we would like to thank the hard-working office staff and the many individual volunteers who served on various committees to help make tonight a success. On behalf of the members of Congregation AABJ&D, our heartfelt appreciation goes to each and every one of you for your support. Last, but certainly not least, we express continuing thanks to Mickey, David and Travis Weiss of The Wilshire Grand Hotel for their generosity in donating this beautiful venue--a most appropriate setting for a lovely communal evening. Dinner Co-Chairs Harvey Bell, Larry Rein, Phyllis & Moshe Roth, Sandra & Norman Samuels Dinner Committee Andrea & Bryan Bier, Larry Liebman Solicitation Committee Harvey Bell, Bryan Bier, Debra Bassan, David Cherna, Yoav Djebali , Arthur Dubroff, Steven Esses, Rich Finkelstein, Chaim Goldman, Stephen Isler, Rich Kelin, Susan Lando, Moshe Levi, Larry Liebman, Michael Luxenberg, Larry Rein, Moshe Roth, Ken Saibel, Larry Schiffman, Yossi Yarkony, Andrew Yolin, Greg Zuckerman This year our Shul dinner takes place during the period of Sefira. Tonight we gather two days before Lag B’omer to pay tribute to three couples who have made a difference in our Shul community. This period of the year is devoted to strengthening our efforts to treat our fellows with respect and kindness. We do so to commemorate the lacking of our people in previous generations in this area. Our honorees this evening are shining examples of what we wish to achieve this time of year. Helen and Jeff Lichtman have dedicated their lives to not only helping those who live with disabilities, but have taught others how to respect, love and care for them. We have been the beneficiaries of countless Yachad Shabbatons where our Shul has been molded as a place of chesed because of their actions. Robyn and Bruce Shoulson have dedicated decades in service to our Shul and the Jewish community. Their wise, insightful counsel and leadership has molded the fabric our Shul’s identity. Their integrity and commitment to our Shul and the Jewish community is legendary. We are humbled that they allow us to pay tribute to them this evening. Michelle and David Glazer are two of the softest and kindest people that I have encountered. They are steadfast in their commitment to the Shul and community. Michelle has nurtured our children with love, kindness, and warmth for decades. We are so grateful for their years of service to our Shul. It is a great pleasure to wish Mazel Tov to our honorees as we celebrate their wonderful achievements. May they go from strength to strength, and may Hashem continue to bless them with good health and nachas ad meah v’esrim. “Making a difference in someone’s life” Each of our honorees tonight can be described through this phrase. In fact, without their presence, our community would not be what it is today. Helen and Jeff Lichtman For as long as they have been living in West Orange, our community has had the fortune to host several Yachad Shabbatonim every year. All of the planning for housing, programming, meals, and most of all, providing a feeling to Yachad members that they are at home in our community has helped shape who we are. Most notably, Yachad comes to our shul every summer on their way to Israel. Through these experiences, Helen and Jeff have not only made a difference in the lives of Yachad members, but through example, Helen and Jeff have helped us make a difference in someone’s life. Michele and David Glazer Michele Glazer is now completing 28 years as teacher in our Lauren E. Bier Nursery School, and 20 years as director. During Michele’s stint, the nursery school has taken on Michele’s character and flavor. How many young children has she educated in her classroom? Looking back, we as a community have been very fortunate to know that Michele would always be there for our kids. Michele has been known to give her students the same love as if they were her own children. In this way, Michele and David have made a difference in someone’s life. Robyn and Bruce Shoulson I had the privilege to serve on the building expansion committee in 1990 when we were planning a major expansion that brought us the enlarged main sanctuary and auditorium, enlarged Beit Midrash and youth lounge, and the Sephardic minyan room. At that time we needed a variance from the township for parking and lot coverage. The process was not simple. I remember several meetings at town hall at which Bruce represented our shul. Suffice it to say that what we have been accustomed to see and use greatly over the last 25+ years would not have happened without Bruce’s involvement. In these ways and countless others, Robyn and Bruce have made a difference in someone’s life. I could not have imagined more fitting honorees for our Dinner. Fondly, Bryan Bier Mazel Tov to the 2018 honorees!
