Printed in the United States of America www.doaks.org/etexts.html The Political Economy of Pre-Colombian Goldwork: Four Examples from Northern South America Carl Henrik Langebaek Universidad de los Andes Introduction: The Problem ome twenty years ago, Alicia Dussán de Reichel (1979: 41) complained that studies that “set out to place the prehistoric metallurgy of Colombia within a wider context Sof cultural development” were not very numerous. Despite a great deal of research on Pre-Columbian goldwork since, the same observation remains true today. One source of frustration comes from the fact that most archaeologists focus on the study of metallurgy as a goal in itself. Although researchers have produced detailed descriptions about the techno- logical characteristics of Pre-Columbian goldwork (Scott 1981), timelines, definitions of “styles” and “traditions,” as well as correlations among styles across Colombia, Lower Central America, and Ecuador (Bray 1981; 1992a; 1997; Plazas and Falchetti 1983), and identifica- tions of plant and animal species represented in ornaments (Legast 1987), they have rarely placed goldwork within a social context (Looper 1996) or incorporated it in models related to social change. Whatever improvement in the research on Pre-Columbian metal objects there has been, further progress will be limited if it is not aimed at understanding the way societies function and change (Lechtman 1984).

The report contains proposals for recommendations to be addressed by the Committee of Ministers to Spain. Both Aragonese and Catalan are minority and minoritised languages within the territory, while Castilian Spanish, the majority language, enjoys total legal protection and legitimation. The fact that we live in the era of the nation-state is crucial for understanding endangered languages in their specific socio-political context. This is why policies at macro-level and micro-level are essential for language maintenance and equality. In this article, we carry out an in-depth analysis of 57 documents: international and national legal documents, education reports, and education curricula. The aims of the paper are: 1) to analyse the current state of Aragonese language teaching in primary education in Aragon, and 2) to suggest solutions and desirable policies to address the passive bilingualism of Aragonese- speaking schoolchildren. We conclude that the linguistic diversity of a trilingual autonomous community is not reflected in the real life situation. There is also a need to Comentado [FG1]: Syntax unclear, meaning ambiguous implement language policies (bottom-up and top-down initiatives) to promote compulsory education in a minoritised language. Este curso pretende hacer una introducción a la historia del muysca, mostrando su relación con las demás lenguas chibchas del país y ofreciendo una breve introducción a su fonología, morfología y sintaxis. En este sentido, el Instituto Caro y Cuervo se propone continuar el primer curso realizado en el país sobre una lengua indígena americana; La Cátedra de Lengua General del Nuevo Reino de Granada, dictada por primera vez en Santafé en el año de 1582 y que representa el primer antecedente de estudios lingüísticos en el territorio colombiano. Objetivo general ● Enseñar los aspectos lingüísticos e históricos más importantes de la lengua muysca de Bogotá a los muiscas de los cabildos de Bosa y Suba. Objetivos específicos ● Ofrecer un panorama de la historia de las fuentes primarias de la lengua muysca y su Cátedra de Lengua General del Nuevo Reino de Granada. ● Realizar una introducción en los últimos estudios de fonología de la lengua. ● Ofrecer una introducción al contenido y la naturaleza de las fuentes primarias. ● Mostrar la clasificación de la familia lingüística Chibcha. ● Establecer la relación que existe entre el muysca y las demás lenguas chibchas. ● Introducir al estudiante en los avances de morfología del muysca. ● Mostrar algunos aspectos de sintaxis de la lengua. ● Guiar la elaboración de un cartilla para la enseñanza de la lengua escrita.

Recibido: enero de 2012 – Revisado: junio de 2012 – Aceptado: 30 de noviembre de 2012 Por: Luis Alfredo Bohórquez Caldera.1 RESUMEN: Este artículo de investigación pretende brindar elementos de análisis sobre el complejo tema de la colonización de la naturaleza. En él se hace una argumentación descriptiva basada hallazgos teóricos sobre las relaciones entre el extractivismo, una práctica propia del dispositivo colonial, y lo que aquí denominamos colonización de la naturaleza. El artículo presenta inicialmente un balance del impacto en la configuración de la visión-apropiación ancestral del territorio y su contenido cultural, a raíz de la imposición de una nueva semántica, en referencia al dispositivo de poder colonial. Luego, se analiza la relación del extractivismo con el proceso de colonización de la naturaleza, para finalmente esbozar una reflexión breve vinculando contextos y problemas contemporáneos. ABSTRACT: This research paper aims at providing some elements of analysis on the complex issue of the colonization of nature. In it a descriptive argument is carried out based on theoretical findings on the relationships between extractivism, which is a proper practice of the colonial device, and what is here called colonization of nature. The article initially presents an assessment of the impact on the configuration of the ancestral vision and appropriation of the territory and its cultural contents, as a result of the imposition of a new semantics, in reference to the device of the colonial powers.
