  • Impact of Shgs on a Particularly Vulnerable Tribe (The Chenchus)
International Journal of Managerial Studies and Research (IJMSR) Volume 4, Issue 8, August 2016, PP 103-114 ISSN 2349-0330 (Print) & ISSN 2349-0349 (Online) http://dx.doi.org/10.20431/2349-0349.0408009 www.arcjournals.org Impact of SHGs on a Particularly Vulnerable Tribe (The Chenchus) B. Seetharamaiah Ph.D. Research Scholar, Department of Economics Sri Venkateswara University Abstract: The chenchus are a primitive Tribal group inhabiting Nallamala forests of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The livelihoods of the tribal group are based on primitive agriculture and forestry. The social development indicators of the country with very high levels of illiteracy, high MMR, IMR and high morbidity rate, the chenchus are a declaiming tribe in terms of population. Sustained efforts made by the government of Andhra Pradesh have resulted in the mobilization of these households into SHGs. This paper deals with how multiple interventions implemented through SHGs have impacted the livelihoods of the Chenchus. The SHG model has contributed significantly to the assets, income, consumption, housing and empowerment of the Chenchus. This study covering a sample of 106 chenchu households and drawn from 16 SHGs from 4 districts was conducted as part of Ph.D. work during 2014-2015.The study establishes the sustainability of SHG approach to the development of Tribal communities. 1. • Shiva's Waterfront Temples
Shiva’s Waterfront Temples: Reimagining the Sacred Architecture of India’s Deccan Region Subhashini Kaligotla Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2015 © 2015 Subhashini Kaligotla All rights reserved ABSTRACT Shiva’s Waterfront Temples: Reimagining the Sacred Architecture of India’s Deccan Region Subhashini Kaligotla This dissertation examines Deccan India’s earliest surviving stone constructions, which were founded during the 6th through the 8th centuries and are known for their unparalleled formal eclecticism. Whereas past scholarship explains their heterogeneous formal character as an organic outcome of the Deccan’s “borderland” location between north India and south India, my study challenges the very conceptualization of the Deccan temple within a binary taxonomy that recognizes only northern and southern temple types. Rejecting the passivity implied by the borderland metaphor, I emphasize the role of human agents—particularly architects and makers—in establishing a dialectic between the north Indian and the south Indian architectural systems in the Deccan’s built worlds and built spaces. Secondly, by adopting the Deccan temple cluster as an analytical category in its own right, the present work contributes to the still developing field of landscape studies of the premodern Deccan. I read traditional art-historical evidence—the built environment, sculpture, and stone and copperplate inscriptions—alongside discursive treatments of landscape cultures and phenomenological and experiential perspectives. As a result, I am able to present hitherto unexamined aspects of the cluster’s spatial arrangement: the interrelationships between structures and the ways those relationships influence ritual and processional movements, as well as the symbolic, locative, and organizing role played by water bodies.

CHALLENGING THE DEVADASI SYSTEM FROM A FRAMEWORK OF INTERSECTIONALITY A Dissertation by MRUDULA ANNE Submitted to the Office of Graduate and Professional Studies of Texas A&M University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Chair of Committee, Jamie Callahan Committee Members, Lisa Baumgartner Dongxiao Liu Jia Wang Head of Department, Fredrick Nafukho December 2014 Major Subject: Educational Human Resource Development Copyright 2014 Mrudula Anne ABSTRACT The practice of marrying girls to deities or priests existed historically in many cultures across South Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. In India alone, this system is known by different names like Devadasi, Mathamma, Jogini, Basavis. Through this study, I represent the unheard voices of Devadasi women from South India and use HRD concepts and principles to synthesize the findings. The field of HRD is not confined to the boundaries of an organization and can play a critical role in community development. This is the first step towards empowering the members of this system and it is hoped that the findings from this study will help inform the organizational practices of NGO’s working with this populace. This study includes a unique set of participants whose experiences have not been captured and examined using intersectionality and Bourdieu, thus contributing to literature. Data was collected through interviews with Devadasi women from South India, specifically Nizamabad, Mahabubnagar, and Tirupati. Five themes emerged from the data – dichotomy, identity, status, fear and locus of control. The theme ‘status’ refers to the participant’s intersecting identities as women and as people from lower castes.

  • Rudrama Devi : the Warrior Queen
laosnuk&2021 Vol. III Issue-1 ISSN 2581-9917 RUDRAMA DEVI : THE WARRIOR QUEEN Aradhana Singh* Our history textbooks are replete with tales of powerful and brave Kings (read men), fighting hard in the battlefield to save their realm from threats within and outside the dominion. However, women are conspicuously missing from this ‘valorous’ narrative, where we rarely hear of female rulers and queens. Does this mean that not a single woman in history occupied the throne or ruled even one of the innumerable regional and nationwide kingdoms we hear of? Or even when historical sources highlight a few instances where women actually navigated through powerful positions, By Simran Tyagi historians and writers of history chose to look the other way and subdue such narratives? Unfortunately, here, the latter seems to be the case. In this article I am going to introduce to you one such exemplary female who effectively ruled a kingdom in thirteenth century India and bravely fought a two-sided battle, the threat of territorial conquest from the outside and on account of being a woman, patriarchal oppositions from within her realm. She is Queen Rudrama- devi, the fourth independent ruler of the Kakatiya Dynasty of Andhra. One of the most prominent rulers of the Kakatiya Dynasty, Rudrama-devi ruled the kingdom for a long period, roughly from 1262 to 1295 CE. The sway of the Kakatiya Dynasty (c. 1150 to 1323 CE) was spread over present-day Telangana region, with Orugallu (later Warangal) as its capital. We do not have much information on the early history of the Kakatiyas.
