Up until 1912, he was an unknown person apart from in nautical circles and was a British sailor that had served in the British Merchant Navy and the Royal Naval Reserve for many years. However, his name is now part of the grand legacy of the Titanic story. The Titanic needs no introduction, it is possibly the most known single word used that can bring up memories of the sinking of the ship for the relatives, it will reveal a story that is still known and discussed to this day. And yet, Captain Rostron had no connections with the ship, or the White Star Line before 1912. On the night of 14th/15th April 1912, because of his selfless actions, he would be best remembered as the Captain of the RMS Carpathia who rescued many hundreds of people from the sinking of the RMS Titanic, after it collided with an iceberg in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean. Introduction “His family details are sketchy...”1 For a century and a half, many wrongs have been written about William Schaw Lindsay and this paper will attempt to clarify how and why he has been misrepresented. The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography claims that his family details are sketchy yet Lindsay was proud of his lowly origins and never concealed them. He was born during a gale on 19 December 1815 at the manse of his uncle, the Reverend William Schaw, in the county town of Ayr in South-West Scotland.2 Tragically, Lindsay’s father died four years later, followed by the death of his mother in 1825 and Lindsay wrote “From that moment I felt I was a child of poverty whose lot was to earn my bread by the sweat of my brow.’” 3 The childless minister and his wife willingly took Lindsay into the manse and sent him to Ayr Academy in the hope that he would become a Free Church minister like himself. -

Ship navigation [pre-publication version] Information integration in the maritime domain Thomas Porathe Information design: In the maritime domain, the design of information for ship navigation tells us research and a story of information integration. As voyages became longer, knowledge about practice, geography and fairways developed. What first could be harboured in the mind of pages 61–84 a single person soon became written sailing directions, and later diagrammatic nautical charts. Today, navigators can rely on advanced static geographic infor- mation as well as dynamic information about the ship’s position, other ships’ positions, and the weather. For centuries, the problem was lack of information; today the problem risks being information overload. Our ways of designing information for navigation have changed, but the same limited human brain is still on the receiving end. An ANZAC1 (with a difference) from King’s Somborne,2 Hampshire, England (updated October 2010) 15/92 Sergeant Sydney John VINE MM By Bob Vine This is the story of my Grandfather, Sergeant Sydney John Vine MM who was born at Upper Brook, King’s Somborne, Hampshire, England on 7 November 1887. His resting place may be found in the Church of England Section, Karori Cemetery, Wellington, New Zealand; Plot 105 G CH ENG2 to be precise, He had died at Wellington Hospital on 8 July 1922 of Pneumonia, with his Service Records showing “Death due to war service”. The village lies on the edge of the valley of the River Test. The 'Sombornes' comprise the scattered village of King's Somborne, together with the hamlets of Little Somborne, Up Somborne, and Ashley. Between King's Somborne and the river lies John of Gaunt's Deer Park and to the south the Romans had a river crossing. King's Somborne had its own drove road used by travellers unwilling to pay the tolls on the turnpike roads to Stockbridge and the Fair. -
