GREAT BRITAIN - Postal History (continued) Lot Type Grading Description Est $A

Lot 1115 1115 CB 1912 complete 'MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO/...CHELMSFORD' parcel label (150x95mm) with private 'PARCEL POST.' & '11APR1912' handstamps both in violet, KEVII 6d purple tied by heavy 'CHELMSFORD'-in-Bars cancel & with part large-boxed 'PARCEL [Coat of Arms] CHELMSFORD/...' datestamp at left confirming the postage of "6", addressed to "Marconi Operator/RMS /co The /", affixed to a slightly larger piece from the packet, minor creasing & blemishes. A marvellous piece of "Titanic" memorabilia that missed the sailing of the ship at noon on 10th April.

Considering the source, addressee & low postage rate, it seems certain that the packet contained telegram forms. The packet was actually handed to the first officer of "Titanic's" sister-ship, the "Olympic", with the intention of it being delivered to the "Titanic" in New York. However, as is well known, on the night of 14-15.4.1912, the "Titanic" - on her maiden voyage - collided with an iceberg & sank, with the loss of some 1500 lives.

In "Maritime Disaster Mail", Norman Hoggarth and Robin Gwynn state "...The only surviving items with postal associations are in the class of fascinating ephemera...several postmarked facing slips used by OS Woody, one of three American postal clerks on the Royal Mail ship...There are [two recorded] surviving articles posted on "Titanic" & taken off the ship [at Southampton] before the trans-Atlantic portion of its journey. And there exist a letter & a postcard written but not posted on board by two survivors..." About a dozen of the postal slips - post office stationery, not postal stationery - are known, of which several are institutionalised. John Woolfe's example sold at auction in 2006 for £6240. Another example - minor stains - sold at auction in 2002 for £11,763. In our opinion, this parcel label is the most evocative and most important postal item associated with this most famous of maritime disasters.

This extraordinary item survived only because it arrived after the departure of the ill-fated "Titanic". This is the first time that it has appeared in the philatelic market, having recently been "discovered" in a provincial general auction in England. It is believed to have been held since 1912 by the family to whom it was given by the First Officer of the "Olympic", and is offered with a piece of unused notepaper headed with embossed 'On board RMS Oceanic', plus two small original photographs, one captioned "Wireless/Apparatus" & the other "Alec Bagot/Marconi Operator/on RMS Olympic". 20,000 Page:3 Website:www.mossgreen.com.au Nov 28, 2016

Ex Lot 1116 1116 C/? A/B - three PPCs of the "Titanic" 1) unused with pencilled notes re the disaster; 2) used with 'BINGHAMTON NY/MAY2/1912' cancel, light crease; & 3) used with 'LYNN MASS/MAY4/1912' cancel & signed "Ella"; also PPCs of the sister-ship "Majestic" 1) by Irving Underhill (NY), unused; & 2) White Star Line advertising card used in 1927, bumped corners; plus small straining spoon with enamelled White Star emblem & 'RMS MAJESTIC'. [We are mindful of the fact that many "Titanic" cards are actually of her sister-ship "Olympic" with "Titanic" captions. It seems highly unlikely that two contemporary American cards could actually be of the doomed ship]

The card signed "Ella" is believed to be from Ella Bertha Holmes White, a Boston socialite & First Class passenger aboard the "Titanic", who survived the disaster. At the official inquiry she gave scathing testimony about the crew of her lifeboat, labelling them "inept & rude". Of the collision with the iceberg, she characterised the incident as "going over about a thousand marbles". This may be the postcard recorded by Hoggarth & Gwynn: see previous lot.
